What’re You Gonna Do About Gas Prices?

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor

As you know, the "economists" and the "oil analysts" are practically wetting their pants with excitement over the upward trend in gas prices. $4 a gallon is their holy grail, and the way they carry on about it, you’d almost think they want it to happen. Gas never goes as high as they predict, but fine: we’ll play along for now. Plus it never hurts to be prepared. Take our poll below to let us know what you’ll do if gas prices hit their magic number. If your preferred course of action isn’t among the options, tell us in the comments what you’d do instead.

I have traveled and lived in other countries. Yes, gas is more expensive in such places as the UK, but people need to consider on how the money is spent in other these other countries. Most countries the government support their citizen at retirement and health insurance is paid for them and a collage education is all paid by their government. Here in the US we have to work and save for retirement, college, and for healthcare. These are extras we US citizens pay plus a lot of taxes and unnecessary taxes that are taxed on top of tax, and steadily rising. So yes $3.79+ a gallon is going to be hurting a lot of Middle-Class Americans. Something needs to be done here in the USA soon to lower fuel and other cost. There is no need for the fuel industry to be making record high profits, it’s important for a business to make profit ok, but not to the point that the Country is going to stuffer from the price gouging. This is where the American Government needs to step up and be true Leaders.

Well I work in a refinery. AS long as people like yourselves rely on some type of fuel. I guess I will have stuff to fix, and have a job!

I have to drive over 200 miles for work tomorrow, yeah I get payed mileage and get reimbursed for the gas, but I have to come up with that money up front. This is just reduculous that gas is this high.

gas prices really suck. so i’m combining trips to the store and work at the same time. any other trips are not going to happen. i refuse to pay that kind of price. 3.45 for reg, 3.65 for premmium. buy some cards and board games and stop driving. especially the gas guzzling suv. people are putting 1/3 of their pay check in the fuel tank–so stop driving or get a fuel efficent. (100 dollar fill ups is retarded).

For me as a Canadian it’s not too bad up here as of right now the gas is at $1.06(ontario), but if I’m not mistaken don’t we have oil on the west coast, and I mean alot of it so why the F&%K are they so bloody high the prices that is. All of us customers should all riot the government and let them know we won’t stand for this no longer and they will reduce the prices back to the way it was 10 years ago or we’ll keep rioting until it changes.Sounds simple enough but, in reality what can we really do were not the government someone help me out here?!

Gas prices will keep going up as the value of the US dollar drops.
We need to get together and show the oil companies and US government that we, the customers have a voice in this issue and will not stand for it. This is just going to snowball into the summer and gas will hit $4.00 a gallon or more. I suggest that we only buy gas on Sundays and Wednesdays and let them sit on there oil. We need to also get together and fix this problem ourselves. How many of you drive something that gets less than 20mpg? Do you really need that car or truck or is it just a status symbol. Grow a set of balls and drive something that gets over 30mpg and save some $$$$.

if the europeans can afford it being more than 2x of that $4 a gallon, i think we’ll be fine. really. we have the cheapest gas, but i’m always up for a good riot.

Well, for now I am just going to piss and moan like most others, because if I stop buying gas to protest no one else will. I’ll be glad to skate everywhere in the summer. Save on gas, put the money into the car, not the tank. Something needs to be organized where everyone doesn’t buy gas for a week. Everyone rides the bus or walks. I know prices will drop if something like that happens.

GTwildfire, you bet they would. After all, it was that kind of momentum that kept the Mustang from becoming that little ricer we now know as the Probe. It was that kind of momentum that pushed for safer cars in the ’60s, and more fuel efficient ones in the ’70s and ’80s. I think a lack of publication and interest in EVs, fuel cells, and the like in the ’90s really stalled and even killed development for some time. Businesses have to give consumers what they want at a reasonable price or else they die because someone comes along who will. If enough of us yell loud enough, there is no political strategy that can stop progress. I’m gonna keep yelling as well as working on my project to do my part to cut oil consumption. You with me man?

People should call new car dealerships and ask salespeople if they have any electric cars. If enough people did that for long enough, maybe auto makers will have an epiphany and start making electric cars without playing games by just teasing us with concepts and empty promises…

MOAN…MOAN…MOAN… Comon people, dont just take it. Stand up and fight. Do something. I know alot of you are handy with a wrench. If you can crank out extra HP, then MPGs should be no problem. Like I said in my previous post, I’m working on an HHO fuel cell that should better my mileage, and hopefully eliminate the need for gas in the future. I believe hydrogen cars are possible, and NO refueling infrastructure Is needed. It’s as simple as pouring H2O(the emphasis on the H) in the tank and letting advanced electrolysis take over. One gallon of water possesses THREE times the energy of gasoline. One gallon of H2O can be used to produce 1000 gallons of hydrogen by volume. I’m all for EVs and other technology, but I don’t think any new tech will come into production unless enough backyard junkies and lobbyists get to work. I’ll let you all know when I break free from oil tyranny.

that’s not the experiment you did in high school. That’s a high output hydrogen generator using nothing but advanced electronics, some electricity, and pure distilled water.

I’m going to do what everyone else is doing, drop my pants, bend over and take it dry. We have a very Horny government and they love to fuck us every chance they get. Heaven forbid they open up the reserves and lower the prices. That would just make too much sence. This Country is FUBAR.

I live in Ottawa, Canada and we’re paying 1.109$ per litre (there are 3.8 litres in a gallon) so roughly if you guy’s even go UP to 4$/g we’re still paying more. You guys have got it good.. Cheers.

GTwildfire
Mar 12, 2008 at 2:47 am

I’m just gonna keep paying until I can’t afford to go to work anymore. I guess if gas hits $5.50 I’ll be forced to get a motorcycle for commuting (my wife’ll freaking hate that) but what can ya do in a world that insists on sucking on the oil straw till the last drop is gone… only then wondering what to freaking do next after having ignored the obvious for much of the time…

GTwildfire
Mar 12, 2008 at 2:41 am

I don’t think people realize just how much we’re in peril. If the global oil supply is disrupted significantly (such as terrorist attack/technical failure and resulting explosions) in Saudi Arabia… there is pretty much nothing in the way of gasoline going to $150 a barrel, and gasoline hotting possibly $8.00 per gallon.
-
If that happened, and it’s pretty damn close to being more a matter of when and not if… people won’t be able to afford to drive to work. Trucking costs for goods and materials will skyrocket. The foreclosure rate will make what’s happening with the subprime market look like a slight market correction… The States will go into a Depression, and the rest of the World will as well.
-
Auto makers keep pushing the same product, oh except now they threw in some electrical assistance to extend the efficiency of their IC offerings.
-
Sorry, but in the big picture… Hybrids are a pathetic offering. No matter how popular they become… their meager savings in fuel consumption will NOT stem demand, neither nationwide nor worldwide.
-
They’ve been talking up Hydrogen / fuel cells. Well, first of all they are taking so freaking long with their so-called development of those technologies and there is no infrastructure nor is there any evidence infrastructure is being readied to power these things. Hydrogen, folks… is smoke and mirrors.
-
What Auto Makers are avoiding is EV technology. Electric vehicles are the ONLY technology that will have a positive effect on pulling us back from the brink. There are already electric cars on the roads, more being developed FOR REAL and they actually were around and popular BEFORE gas cars.
-
Despite this, Auto Makers outright REJECT the technology… and if all hell breaks loose and gas goes to $8.00 a gallon… it’s THEIR fault and it is OUR fault for not twisting their arms.
-
Too bad common sense dosen’t exist on a mass scale.

I got it all figured out. I’ve been working on a hydrogen fuel system for awhile now(the idea is to ditch gasoline completely and run off of hydrogen extracted solely from pure water). It’s not ready really, but I figure I can at least supplement my mileage maybe double it with my homemade HHO system. One guy is getting 60+mpg out of his old Escort. The vid is on YouTube.
