smart or iQ: Which Would You Choose?

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

The smart fortwo has officially arrived Stateside, and the Toyota iQ got a lot of attention at the Geneva Motor Show last week. Toyota may bring the little iQ to the US if it can meet federal safety standards (those back seats may have to go). So, if this were to happen, which would you choose: the smart fortwo or the Toyota iQ?

I was set to buy the Smart forTwo but it’s simply not available in my area yet. Now I hear about the Toyota IQ and have to say that I’m impressed with the previews. A few people mentioned pricing… Toyota has NOT said a single word about pricing. There isn’t a site that I’ve reviewed that even hints at a price.

They are planning a mere 100,000 units to start off with and may run into the same supply/demand problems the Smart forTwo is going through now. This would extend availability to another year or more for those holding off on a purchase.

In any case, knowing a bit more about both cars – I still like the Smart forTwo (version2). However, if the Toyota Aygo was available in the U.S. – this would be my small car choice (over the Yaris and the two MicroCars listed here). It’s much shorter than the Yaris but has a full car feel. The price is hard to beat… about 10k US if available here.

I really think Toyota would do better with the Aygo (pronounced ‘I Go’)than they would do with the IQ here in the states and in Canada.

I’d go with the toyota. The smart has a jerky auto trans. It is very unstable at hway speeds. It requires high octane gas and its a euro made car so its going to brake down and repairs and upkeep and parts will be high. Although toyota better not go cheap in this car like they did with the yaris and not provide US dealers with yari cars with no abs or side airbags. note: Its ipossible to find a yaris hatch with side airbags and abs. Shame on you toyota for putting your customers in grave danger. U suck.

I would choose the Toyota IQ, I like the styling better. I also here it’s cheaper and gets better gas milage?! Still though, not a fan of either

Defdinatly neither seeing how they would both be totaled in an accedent even if they were in a crash with a miata.

I’d have to pick the smart…it comes as a convertible…you can get a subwoofer/component sound system…separate bumpers from the fenders means lower repair jobs and more more more opportunity to customize. If toyota would release more info I might go in their direction tho…

I would save my money and buy a go-cart, golf-cart, or even power-wheel. Does about the same thing. It looks like a death sentence in an accident. Imagine getting hit buy an Expedition.

IQ. Cheaper, actually can seat 4 (3 adults and a child), Toyota reliability, better gas mileage (and won’t need premium fuel), better styling, navigation system and all the airbags you could need. I have a Yaris and would love to park the IQ next to it!

I hate to say this but the Toy looks better than the Benz and also would be cheaper to maintain so I would chose the Toy.

toyota reliability and maintanance cost fits the market the iQ is appealing to much better than anything a german engineered car (with expensive and regular maintanance cost). I’d go with toyota, they know how to make “lower end” cars much better because that’s where they first started. Now they’re on top of course. Go iQ

I would have to choose the Toyota because it has better styling and it’s Toyota, let’s get real for a minute here Mercedes-Benz has never built a small car EVER, up until now right? On the other hand Toyota are experts in this from big engines to small they made this car look good and it probably is better mechanically!

I would choose the smart, its original in shape, concept of a micro car, and name really

Toyota IQ cheaper and coooler….

Hugh
Mar 13, 2008 at 3:01 am

its a tough choice, the smart is a piece of crap that was recalled for its propensity to roll over and will probably break down after the warranty expires as is typical of all over-priced European cars. Nonetheless, it has posuer snob appeal. The toyota is a little bland and will probably have the resale value of a Hyundai but will do its job day in and day out. Maybe I will pick a really coool skateboard :D

I wouldn’t buy either, I’d go with the Subaru R2. But if I had to chose one of these………. I’d go with the Toyota/Benz. Looks better.

GTwildfire

I’d choose… a Tesla Roadster. Uses less gas, heck uses no gas at all and why not? It’s not like I’ll own either of these two nor a Tesla anyway so since it’s hypothetical… the Tesla.

THE SMART IS UGLY, THE TOY LOOKS KINDA COOL, SO I WOULD COP THE TOY, AND TROW IT ON SOME 17″MOMOS AND FEEL GOOD

I WOULD GO WITH THE TOYOTA, TOYOTA HAS BUILT FAST CARS WITH FOUR CYLINDERS AND MASTERED CRASH TESTING PLUS THE TOYOTA LOOKS LIKE YOU COULD MOD IT A LITTLE LIKE COOLER TIRES, AUDIO, PAINT AND LIGHTS. I DROVE PAST ONE OF THOSE MERCEDES ON A WINDY SNOWY DAY ABOUT A WEEK AGO AND IT SWAYED AROUND LIKE A PINBALL.

I’d go with the smart. It was the first car of its size. Also, aren’t they built by Mercedes-Benz? If I was ever to buy one, I would defiantly go with Mercedes engineering.

I’d go with the Toyota if I had to drive a car like that I’d want one that looked safer. I can’t believe it seats 4 I wouldn’t sit in the back of that thing It would be a death wish. -Justin

Yeah… how about neither? I’d rather ride a bicycle then cruise around in those homo-mobiles. Better mpg too.

I’d have to say the Toyota IQ as it has seating for 4 which makes more sense than just 2 seats.
