Genesis Coupe Debut: Hyundai Totally Brings It
By John Coyle
Editor
There’s been a ton of buzz around Hyundai’s new Genesis Coupe, so the brass wanted to make sure it debuted with a bang—literally. Not only did the company employ a pair of sexy stunt drivers—the one behind the wheel of the silver car is Angelina Jolie’s driving double—to turn some donuts for the assembled crowd, they shot off fireworks as each one rolled into view. Seriously, this video is awesome. While the smoke from the detonations did get a little thick, the whole event was perfectly choreographed, and when the ladies wound them up, the 300 horsepower motors sounded great. Of course, getting a decent picture of the new sheet metal was next to impossible in the post-demonstration feeding frenzy, but I did manage to get some great footage of the cars in motion. Enjoy.

Just looking at people’s comments here…although hyundai has announced this as a mustang fighter, i dont think it will steal sales away from the mustang. However, i do think it will compete more with the Nissan 350Z/Infinity G37…I am a big Mustang fan, but i also like this new genesis coupe – and if the price was right, I’d probably buy one…it’s really just in a different class.

looks like they took some styling cues from the IS250/350… but whatever. this is a great movement for any car company. a cheap, rear-drive sports car with good power. now we just need Nissan to step up to the plate and give us a Silvia again… there is no way they would lose money.

I’m not going to bash Ford or any other product. In fact, I tune Fords and I know what they can do, BUT I do tune Hyundais as well. Yes, Hyundais. Four cylinder Tiburons can make just shy of the 400hp range with a bolt-on turbo and actually be reliable. So 212hp on the 4 cylinder 2 liter is very conservative of what it CAN do.
The fact is Hyundai is 3rd in initial quality after Porsche and Lexus and it’s a close third. So for those who say, “they’re going to break” obviously doesn’t own one.
As for the interior, check out the new Santa Fe. I have sat in a ton of cars and the interior is the easiest on the eyes. Easy to read and still looks great. I think the Genesis is going to look the same way.
For those who are saying they’re copying, so be it. With a 111 inch wheel base the only copying I’m seeing sounds like Mercedes or BMW and if it works, why not copy? I would rather copy than make a “retro” vehicle and still not have to pay the price tag of the Lexus or comparable vehicle. The only problem is, I’m not seeing the copying that everyone is claiming.
Look at the formula of long wheel base, rwd w/limited slip, brembo brakes and turbo applications and it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to say see this car is going to be awesome for both the commuter and the racer/show enthusiast and I wouldn’t doubt some drift applications either.

I really wish all of you Hyundai haters would back up all of this crap that you spew out of your toothless mouths. I drive a 2006 Sonata Limited my wife drives a 2007 Santa Fe GLS 4×4 my daughter drives an 2005 Elantra GT my other Daughter drives an 2004 Tiburon GT and my son drives a 2005 Tuscon Limited. All I repeat all of those vehicles were purchased brand spanking new by my wife and I from our local Hyundai dealership the cars have mileage ranging from 12,000 to 90,000 miles and besides regular oil changes I can remember taking my daughters Tiburon in twice otherwise my Hyundai’s have all held up really well while getting superior gas mileage and saving me lots of money. So when the Genesis and the Genesis coupe come out you can count on me being right there to take home one of each and maybe a Veracruz just for good measure.

looks cool, though it’s still too early to tell how good it will be to own. I like the design a lot. Hyundai interiors aren’t the prettiest things in the world, but they are higher quality than my Honda and leaps and bounds better than anything ford offers in a similar car (rustang). Hyundais are really very high quality cars now from everything I’ve seen of them in the past few years. Those who swear by their mustangs can have them. I do like this car so far and the one thing that would ruin it for me is having all of the mustang idiots (lots of them) jump ship to the genesis. The mustang is a mediocre performer at best (low quality too) and is only still around because of fanboys and rednecks. It’s like a former high school track star who is now really fat and out of shape. Hardly sexy at all imo.

When I first read about and saw pics of this car I thought that finally Hyundai was going to do something different. Then I saw the interior and was exactly reminded of why I would never even consider buying one. Besides the low rent materials, the LCD display is a joke, its something out of a 1980’s car.

I think it will be funny when these get on the road. I wish I had one just so I could pull up to a new shitty v8 Stang and just smoke it. The best part is that when I pass him, he can look right at the Hyundai emblem and cry.

wow that accuatly kills altima and the mustang

It’s a hyundai, so I can’t say much for quality, but I’m glad they’re treading on the RWD terrain, unlike other new models; like the Altima coupe, Pontiac G6, Honda Accord and Scion TC. It’ll be nice to have a car that can do donuts and drift corners that won’t put a hole in your pocket. Although, the price in maintenance and repairs will problably end up kicking you in the rear.

Wow, these Koreans are really good at copying the Japanese b/c that thing looks like a re-worked G35, but ugly. First they made an exact copy of the accord, which they call a sonata and now this. Wow they are so cool, and origional.
