Hako Coupe Concept Unveil
By Rob Einaudi
Editor-in-Chief
Developed by the Tokyo Design Devision, the Hako Concept Coupe is like a hot rodder’s dream of the xB. It looks hot in orange, too. Let’s hope they end up making something like it. Check out the light show during the unveil. I had to fight photographers to get close to the thing. Two more shots after the jump.

Breaking news Chad! The S200 is going to be hacked this year so they Scion would be only competing with the Miata

My vote goes for a two seater, possibly convertible, maybe to compete with the s2000 and the miata.

This concept is well disguised, but I believe there are a lot of design cues here that could be used in future Scions. Obviously it has the usual show car persona with the ridiculous interior and pillar less greenhouse, but the overall shape is reminiscent of a 1930s chop-top coupe, which are still prevalent at hot rod shows. I could definitely see Scion doing a 2-door chop top coupe, only modernized. In fact, i would go so far as to say that if this car had a slighty less agressive color, more ergonomic interior (xD layout possibly?) and a more conservative design, it would be the next fad car

I know it looks like a character from the Simpsons, but I can’t decide which one. What is with the jar of motor oil stuck in the dash?

From the windsheild down and the rest of the car looks sweet. I wont complain about the windsheild because i knwo this is a concept, and they’d have to be on some serious shit to put that windsheild design into a production vehicle. A few styling tweaks though and i think scions gonna have something goin. Its like a box on wheels…just like, not as boxy haha.

One last thought: looking at the the interior of the car, and the controls especially, am I the only person who could see this as a potential drive-by-wire car?

oops, on the hoser comment. Thought this was one of the Eric hijacked threads I read earlier.

I really like it. But I really hate it. Maybe, GTwildfire, if there’s really a shred of interest in this car, they will have to go with “Like it AND hate it”.
It’s such an odd blend of shapes, there’s going to be a really mixed reaction to it.
As far as aerodynamics go…damn! I like the xB, but I bought a PT crusier. Knowing how the wind feels at highway+ speeds in mine, and the xB (worse) during my test drive, I can only imagine that poor damn car is going to feel like a big fast dog taking off running with the chain still attached to the collar…”bark, bark, bark, bark…..bar-ack?” It’s got a chance, if it’s got the tc engine in it, to have some spunk. But even if you put a big block v-8 with a supercharger in it, at some speed or another, I can only imagine the top of the passenger compartment imploding violently.
Good luck Toyota!
(I put my name AND my ride page, hosers.)

I think this is an interesting design. For all those know-it-alls who find it repulsive there IS an alternative to killing yourself…don’t buy one. Better yet…design and build something better.

When I first saw this car, I laughed. I don’t think I have ever had that response to a car before. I hope Scion gets a clue. They obviously don’t understand what Americans truly want.

Wow, I gotta say that is probably one of the most disgusting looking cars I’ve seen in a while. I sure hope that never makes it into production

This looks like the love child between an Audi TT and a skyscraper. I love the love of the bottom half of the car, but those vertical windows look like crap. Why spend all that time in the wond tunnel getting smooth lines for the grill and hood but then put in a Hummer style windshield? They need to pull the bottom of that window forward to give it a more sleek look. This whole ‘box’ concept is crap.

Yesterday I was thinking it was too easy to sleep at night. Now I have to live with the thought of waking up one morning and seeing this parked somewhere near my home. I think I just died a little inside. Thanks Scion. Thanks a lot.

Exactly how many clowns will fit in this thing?
One selling point will be the above par rear visibility.

they’ll have to change their marketing scheme from “like it or hate it” to “hate it or hate it”
GTwildfire

All it needs is big floppy ears and 2 round white circles applied on the windshield and it’ll look like a freaking dog.

Haven’t the staff that dreamed this up heard of AERODYNAMICS?
-
I’m sorry but having the windshield perfectly vertical is and looks dumber than dumb.

Apparently there weren’t enough complaints about xB windows constantly breaking because they are straight up and down and every rock cracks them.

Let’s hope this isn’t the tC replacement.
Sport COUPE people. Come on!
Toyota, while having the best reliability and reputation, has the worst styling hands down. It’s as if they’re marketing department has no idea what people really want.
I can see the hot rod element in it, but really, it looks like a school bus was dropped on a potentially hot looking sport coupe. There’s no cohesiveness to the design whatsoever.
I keep looking at the pictures as I type this, and while it’s growing on my slightly, I was really hoping for something more like the Fuse concept. Something less Mini, GTI, PT Cruiser, HRT, and more RSX, Civic Coupe, even 350Z!
Stupid Toyota.
