The El Camino is Back: Mullets of the World, Rejoice!

By Mike Musto

AKA Mr. Angry

Ok, so maybe its not actually called the El Camino yet. In fact, Pontiac doesn’t really know what the hell to call it, so they’re having contest to figure it out. One thing they do know is that they’re building it—and it’ll be here by the end of this year. The new El Camino (yeah, baby!) is actually a Pontiac G8 with the tush cut off and replaced by a pick-up bed. These babies are huge in the land down under, where they’re simply known as Utes. Power will be the same as the G8 GT, meaning it will get the same 361hp/385lbs-ft mill. This is good news because aside from hauling whatever you can fill the bed with it will surely haul some serious ass as well. Check out the rest of the pics after the jump.

And remember, people: "Business in the front and PARTY IN THE BACK!!" Long live the mullet.

IF Pontiac is seriously looking for a name, then they should consider the name “CLOVIS”. Back in mid-late 1950’s they switched the Pontiac emblem from an Indian Head to an Indian Arrow Head, and while many times they have use car names that refer to particular Indian culture, they have yet to use a name that refers to the actual symbol itself, IE: Arrow Head. “CLOVIS” is the name that was given to the very first Stone Arrow Head, though back then they were probably killing Mammoths and not Buffalo, so it was actually more of a Spear Head. Still it’s a fitting name for a new automobile that actually has the look of an Arrow Head, not to mention an emblem of the very product logo attached to the front of it.

Australians do rule… While there’s no more “Wild West” in the States, there’s still Australia. I’d visit but there’s 1/2 the Earth to travel, and even swimming along the coast down there can be fatal – sometimes without even knowing what killed you… slowly and very, very painfully.

Nonetheless I’ll always admire Australia.

I hope you guys enjoy these things, us Aussies have even gone so far as to export them with suspension & drive train tweaks so they feel more at home on US roads, a favour we hope you all return when you decide to export your cars to us (I’m lookin at you 300C)

Though it is a rare thing for us to be driving a car for almost a year before you guys even lay eyes on it, makes me proud to be an Aussie.

Back in 2002 a guy in LA argued point blank in a mall that the yet to come GTO was an all American car that Aussies stole.
Just to inform him that we had em here for two years as a Monaro.

If I could see his face now :P

Sup! these are everywhere down here in Aus, bit more flashy though, made by HSV, all the pontiacs are made here for the US, check out the R8 on the link, its basically what they look like down here, the economy is going crazy and there’s about 4 on every block. damn cashed up 18 year olds! the wheels on the display model are a joke, they come standard on the base car that these things are based on, even th e monaro, the GTP to you guys is harder hitting down here (even though they stopped making it!)
and yes, even here we give them crap for driving a car designed for a painter.

Would be better if it was a Chevy and called an El Camino SS for sure with the 6.0 in her!
I have seen the Australian version and looks fantastic with the Sportback fiberglass tonneau cover and factry ground effects they have for it! Hope there offered as an option unlike the GTO which only had a couple of options for it.

This will be most welcomed to the States.
They’ll be a lot of Full sized trucks for sale after this comes out!
Including mine! ;)

I think its kinda cool. And before the morons start rippin’ on me, no I don’t have a mullet. Back to the car. Put a tonneau cover on it, not just the plain ones but one of those Retrax covers. They are a hard cover that rolls open like a garage door in case you need to haul something big. Some better wheels would set it off nicely.

If they put AWD in it, this thing is sure to be a success, especially with the “I own an F250, but the most off-roading I do is my gravel driveway” crowd.

Eric your a wanker mate. Now back on topic. The Ute looks great, i’m liking the new front bar, suits it nicely. Get rid of the crappy cloth cover and install a nice hardcover, looks much neater.

Aussie RWD and American V8, now that’s what I call a coalition

Well I figure if you wanna be an internet tough guy, I’ll return the favor. “I don’t know how to put the link up even though when I input my stupidity there’s a box that says ‘Ride Page Url’” Keep your mouth shut and let everyone think you’re an idiot instead of opening your mouth and proving it.

I really do hope this thing takes off. We (americans) need to get out of these giant SUV’s that guzzle gas and are strictly overkill for what we need.

This thing actually has decent payload and towing capacity. Instead of buying a new Silverado for “just in case I need to haul something on the weekend” hopefully people will consider this too. Get better gas mileage and blow the doors off most on the street. Sounds like a winning combo.
