What's a Gearhead to do About Nosey Neighbors?

By Jen Dunnaway

There’s a pretty lengthy thread on The H.A.M.B. about the ways that busybody neighbors can put a damper on your car hobby. Drag home your latest heap of junk exciting new project vehicle, and the minute you turn your back, someone’s come onto your property to slap an abandoned car sticker or a tow notice on it. In condo developments, where people shell out big bucks for the privilege of living right on top of each other and constantly being in each other’s business, it’s even worse: you can get tut-tutted or fined for so much as changing a tire in the parking spot that you pay for. While a lot of local governments have extremely punitive laws concerning what you do with your cars on your own property, generally what it takes to actually get a citation is some nosey-parker blowing the whistle on you. So the people who truly have the potential to cook up a nice nightmare for you and your ride(s) aren’t so much the police or the zoning inspectors, but the quiet couple next door or the nice retired guy mowing his lawn across the street.

Since it seems like so many people exist primarily to make life less fun for gearheads, I have to wonder—how many of you have gotten interference from your neighbors over your car hobby? And how do you deal with nighbors to minimize the damage they can cause? Keep to yourself, or form alliances? Build a really tall fence? Retalliate? It seems that, in a society that doesn’t place much value on project cars, enthusiasts are the ones who stand to lose the most in these kinds of transactions. So what can you do to get a busybody off your back without having the whole thing backfire?

What are you building? Is that allowed?

I just got a citation to appear in court because my ‘ball busting’ zoning officer neighbor, doesn’t like that my vehicle just sits in my driveway, (needs 550 dollars of work that I can’t afford, single mom busting butt to make bill payments) its registered yet instead of coming to me said its abandoned and ‘filled with rubbish”. Its filled with books and boxes from my move a few months ago!! He also claims along side the car that there is ‘rubbish”. Its freaking building material neatly piled!! WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE?????

I’ve just stuck to helping my neighbors out with their projects… Helping them out with their cars, plowing the driveway in the winter and such. It usually works, but I recently had one neighbor call on one of my cars. Not a problem. I just phoned the city over his numerous housing violations on his rental properties.
Me: Out a few days moving the car into the garage.
Him: Out thousands in repair money, hotel fees (for the residents) and a few nice lawsuits.

I have honestly never gotten any shit from my neighbors, or anybody for that matter. Knock on wood.

I recently saw this on youtube, where an argument obviously turned into action http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0sdzfwFyRY

Luckily my closest neighbours live 500m away, and they run their house off a gas powered generator, so i dont need to worry

When I was in a market, any house in a condo community was out of the question, because of cars but also because of everything from the color of paint I chose for a fence to getting a B-Ball hoop or swing set for the kids.

Still there’s the possibility of a neighbor not being thrilled, but the smart neighbors have me do their brakes, troubleshoot or help them find their next rides or sell their old ones.

A relationship between neighbors can and should be mutually beneficial. Too bad not everyone can comprehend that.

Jen you should deflate someones tire and then sit and watch while they eye you wondering if you’d help (since they know you work on your car), then watch as the people come to ticket them, from your anonymous call!

I have had this exact problem on many occasions. I found a solution!!!! and I havnt had a problem since.

Get to know your neighbors. Introduce yourself when you move in, invite them to the house warming. be personable and kind BEFORE they find out what your hobby is. These whistle blowers are alot less likely to blow when the like you.

Great article! Been there and done that to all of the above. Last year I got so made about a neighbor complaining about my 1928 Ford sitting in my driveway. He called the city and said, “It just sits there and it’s never driven.” I could have simply moved it once a month but the “nosey neighbor” really pissed me off. It took some doing to talk my wife into it but I took my 1928 Ford and put it with my stored cars indoors and then I brought home my old 1968 Ford shop pickup that needs a paint job so bad it’s pathetic and parked it on the side of my home next to my neighbor’s (The one that complained) house. They did everything in their power to get my truck removed but the city told them, “It’s licensed and registered and the law does not specify what a car has to look like with regards to paint.” I am willing to bet the next time I park something out there they will keep their mouth shut.
