Hit and Run Sleuthing at VWVortex

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

An interesting story has been unfolding over at VWVortex this week. Member Runin2Rich4FSi’s GTI was hit while parked. No note was left. However, some evidence, in the form of smashed turn indicator lens, remained. So then a friend on VWVortex posted pics of the reconstructed turn indicator lens, hoping that other members would help Runin2Rich4FSi identify the kind of vehicle that hit his GTI. People theorized 90s Camrys, Accords, Taurus, etc. Meanwhile, Runin2Rich4FSi took a tour of his neighborhood and found an Accord car with a broken turn indicator lens! It even had some white paint on the bumper! At this point he decided to do the responsible thing and contact the police.

The police gave him a bit of a run-around, and by the time they were finally ready to act, the car had disappeared. Here’s Runin2Rich4FSi’s most recent update in the thread:

Bad news guys, the car that hit my car has dissapeared, and the cops are making me think twice about pressing charges. They are saying in order to do the right thing we would have to take a scraping off of both bumpers and submit it into the lab for testing. we can only do that with a warrant from the court. I will need a lawyer etc. f*ck this crap!

So what’s the moral here? I have the rest of the pics after the jump. Or you can visit the VWVortex thread and read through the 10+ pages. Hope they manage to track the Accord owner down and get this resolved!

If you’ve got a receiver hitch, try one of these: http://www.superbumper.com

The “proper” thing to do was attempted with the usual fruitless results. I say if you do see the car again , give it a good kick in every body panel. Even if the white paint on it wasn’t yours ,someone else is driving a white car that has been victimized. My car has a 2″ gouge down to the paint from a Target parking lot and a catering van came to my work and a 280 lbs man thought if he parked a foot away from my car he could get out. Some people are just automotivly retarded and deserve vigilante justice.

I had just started driving the new truck which was a lot bigger compared to my old ranger. No need for that shit.

They wouldn’t need to collect paint from either car, they’d only have to fracture match the already-collected broken plastic pieces to the light assembly on the suspect car. But that would still require submission to the lab.

I am embarrased to say that i’m guilty of something like this. When i just got my new truck i turned too wide into a mall parking spot, and brushed against a volvo. Of course it wasnt as bad as this, only some paint transfer a few small scratches on theirs, and mine had a couple of spots of paint missing. And like an idiot i left. It has come back to haunt me, i got the bumper repainted on my truck, and not 3 days after i backed into someone leaving a huge dent in my rear bumper, but no damage to their car. And now the repair job on my bumper is flaking off, and i have some dents and scratches that i have no clue where they came from. I guess you can say karma got me. The moral of the story: LEAVE A NOTE!

That’s nothing.

My mom’s Torrent got hit recently while parked on the side of a road. The other vehicle scratched the entire driver side of her car, destroyed the mirror, and then hit the tire that was sticking out (parked on a hill) and bent the wheel, strut, control arm, and the FRICKING ENGINE CRADLE! All that was left of his car was a piece of a Ford hubcap…
