What's Weak This Week: Not Leaving a Note

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

It’s probably happened to everyone at least once (admit it). You inflict minor damage on a parked car and the owner isn’t around. What do you do? That’s right. You leave a note. Don’t be like the ass with the Accord who smacked Runin2Rich4FSi’s GTI.

But are there any circumstances where you don’t need to leave a note? How about those integrated body-colored bumpers that most cars have these days? What if you’re parellel parking and rub someone’s bumper and leave a little skuff? Do you leave a note? But isn’t that what bumpers are for? Bumping? The bumpers on my Mopar and old Volvo can take all sorts of abuse and not show it. But these new ones, I don’t know… But when in doubt, leave a note people. It’s the right thing to do.

That is one possible solution. Or you could get bumpers like the ones on go-karts. you know, the kind that wraps around the whole vehicle.

Nothing pisses me off like this kind of thing. I’ve had 3 vehicles damaged in the Wal-Mart parking lot that way. I don’t drive junk, I take pride in how my vehicles look. The only thing that prevents this is parking at the very back of the lot away from all the assholes.

i’ll leave a note on a car that’s worth it. Look, if I hit an 88 tempo that’s obviously a shit box, and the owner won’t notice, maybe i’ll drive away. :)

if someone hits my car, i won’t mind all that much. dents and scrapes give a car character.

Back in ’87 I had a ’74 Formula 400 Firebird. Was in Pep Boys with it parked out front. It was raining that day. When I came out, a good samaritan told me he saw someone swipe the side of the car while pulling out, then drive away. I couldn’t tell there was damage because the car was wet, well until I ran my fingers along the new crease in the door. The samaritan handed me the plate number of the car that did the damage.
-
I called the cops, they came and traced the car to a resident in Philly. Boy was that guy surprised when he got a call from the police.
-
Long story shortened (slightly) the Firebird was fixed perfectly. Took two days for the turnaround and the guy who swiped my car was RELATED to the owner of the body shop… leaving me to wonder why the hell he didn’t just leave a note. It’s not like he was going to be taken to the cleaners by his uncle!

Not having respect for others’ property AND not taking personal responsibility for one’s mistakes are two serious character flaws. NEVER just say “his insurance will take care of it” cause that’s a BULLSHIT COP-OUT excuse for running away from responsibility.

I have never not ‘left a note’ Actually the only parking lot accident I called the person because I knew them. The BS is that I told my insurance company very specifically to call me when they were going to check out the vehicle. They did not and as a result when the vehicle came back from the body shop I discovered that not only did I pay for a little bend to be pulled from the fender well but miraculously I also paid for the bumper damage on the complete opposite side of the vehicle that someone had hit a year prior and not left a note. Will I ever again inform the party who is unknowingly damaged, who knows. I definitely will never insure with Farm Bureau again.

I can honestly say i’ve never bumped another car, but damn, 4 the guy who hit my El Camino 3 days before I put in storage if he had left a note it wouldnt have been as bad, came out of the bank, that ruined my day lol

all these ricers with 23 different colors on them anyway, it doesn’t matter.
