On the Track with a 2007 Corvette Z06

By Mike Musto

AKA Mr. Angry

So on Sunday I was up at Pocono International Raceway in Long Pond, PA taking my Instructor Training course with NASA. I was going to take the Charger but it’s just not ready for track season yet. Then I was going to take our 4-cylinder ‘06 Honda Accord (don’t laugh, it’s a feisty little bugger) when my very good friend Carmine, who is also in the class, suggested, "Why don’t we just share my ‘07 Corvette Z06?" Hmmm…. not a bad idea at all. Now, I have driven Z06s before, but until yesterday had never driven one on the track.

WELL! Let me tell you all something, this car is simply FANTASTIC on an open road course. Power, speed, handling… it was just amazing. Now, I know some of you are just going to read this and go, DUH….
it’s a Z06, but the fact of the matter is that you have NO idea how good a car really is until you track it. The only way that I can characterize the Z06 is to compare it to a sledgehammer. The power delivery is bazooka like, where say in a Ferrari F430 it is very linear. The handling is great, but you have to muscle it a bit when pushing it hard. The only drawback on the track were the stock Goodyear run flats–they suck. After about ten fast laps they were all sorts of greasy. Not fun when you’re entering turn two off the straight on the North Course at Pocono at 110 mph. Otherwise… man, what a car. Seriously, this thing is no joke.

Should have F1’s on that thing. Best tires I’ve ever had on a car, and they hold up well.

Michlein Pilot Sport Cups going on, installed Hotchkiss sway bars, Konis next.
Mr. Angry was upon the wheel and grinin all the way around.
Adding to the greasy tires, we had a coolant leaker in front of us, so much fun sliding this baby through 2 and 3

Yeh those ZO6s are simply awesome. I watched a doco on the making of the C6 ZO6 (Megastructures: National Geographic) and I didn’t realise how much time and technology actually goes into these cars. I thought it was simply a matter of bolting on some extras to a base model C6 but I was wayyyy wrong. Do yourself a favour and watch the doco if possible. What an awesome machine!
