What’s Weak This Week: Edmunds Declares Chevy Victor in Camaro/Challenger Match-up
By Rob Einaudi
Editor-in-Chief
When Edmunds isn’t busy converting cool old rides into office furniture, they engage in silly mental exercises. The latest is their Camaro vs. Challenger match-up. That’s right, neither car is out yet, and the Camaro isn’t even due til 2009, yet Edmunds felt they could declare the Camaro "the winner" based on the fact that the Pontiac G8 GT outperformed the Dodge Charger SRT8 in one of their tests a short while back. Honestly, this is one of the silliest pieces of "automotive journalism" I’ve read in a while. Now, let’s say Chevy actually puts out a Camaro with the 505 hp LS7 from the Corvette Z06 or the 620 hp supercharged LS9 from the Corvette ZR1. Well, maybe Ma Mopar will introduce a Challenger with a Viper V10. Who knows? It’s all speculation.
I say we wait til both cars are available before anyone declares one car a winner. And please, be sure to compare two versions that are priced about the same (Chevy hasn’t announced any pricing on the Camaro, remember?). And finally, if/when some journalist does declare one of these cars a winner, no one is gonna care. Why? Cause at the end of the day, Mopar guys buy Mopars. Chevy guys buy Chevies. And Ford guys buy Fords. If a Chevy guy tells a Mopar guy that some dude at Edmunds declared their car "a winner," the Mopar guy is just gonna laugh and tell his Chevy buddy to meet him out at the track (of course, that won’t settle it, either).

ERIC — america has dirt cheap oil prices, in europe we pay at least 1.20euro per litre, you work that out in dollars and gallons! and american cars are much cheaper (in america anyway), $40,000 for that challanger, thats amazing value compared to european or jap cars.

wasn’t that test between the Pontiac G8 GT and the Dodge Charger R/T and not the SRT8 or was that a different article

…and as far as the “comparo” goes, until, I see the Camaro v. Challenger v. Mustang road test in either Car and Driver, Road and Track, or Motor Trend, I don’t believe it at all. Consumer Reports and Edmunds are run, edited and published by these well off, know nothing, silver spoon individuals that drive a new Mercedes as their “beater car,” and compare everything as such. Until some real car people drive the REAL cars, this means nothing.

Chrysler is not threatening to go out of business, they were just sold off by Daimler, and if they’re able to develop things like the Challenger, well, apparently they’re not as bad off as your BMW forum buddies say they are. I also don’t see one thing that’s “run of the mill” about the Challenger. It costs just over $40k while delivering performance that, dare I say it, potentially rivals the M3, for much cheaper. While you’re at it, name 1 thing from Lexus that can even stand toe to toe with the Challenger. Go ahead and mention the IS-F because at the end of the day, It’s still an overpriced Toyota with an engine bay that once the engine cover is removed looks like a bald eagle made a nest under it’s hood. You say American cars are overpriced, yet you support BMW and Lexus. Tell me that’s not hypocritical right there.

American cars are expensive? Really? That statement alone is clear evidence that Eric is clueless.

Edmunds is apparently staffed by idiots and CR isn’t much better off.

First of all ERIC… bite my fat American ass !!!
~
Second, publications like Edmunds and Consumer Reports are like the Engineer who thinks there a mechanic. Just because you know how things work doesnt mean you know cars.

Speculating that one car beats another because its similar to another is downright absurd. I love the G8 and Im happy its balls to the wall fast, but its no Camaro. The Camaro SS is going to be solely built for taking all comers, but if Dodge decides to supercharge that 6.1 it might take more than speculation to call this race over.

I just dont like the fact that everyone is so keen on supporting a company that threatens to go out of business at all! how does that affect the value of your chrysler product, then they do things like offer lifetime warranties, and 0% financing on every car they have! if the product wasnt so cheesily put together then they would be respectable, My dodge dealer is a production in/out dealership and all the sales guys and managers have no customer service! I support my lexus dealer, and SPORT HAUS where they have vehicles that catch eyes, not your run of the mill challenger. the thing isnt even out yet and already its too played out. America has high gas prices and really overpriced cars!
