Smart vs. Nissan Truck

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

I’m sure you’ve all seen this Fifth Gear video by now. And the Smart cars have performed well in other crash tests. The Smart below was t-boned by the Nissan, but luckily no one was hurt. According to the thread over at the Smart Car of America forums, the Nissan was totaled but the Smart came out looking pretty good. Maybe too good? More pics after the jump.

Who knows if it’s going to be a hit or a flop. These badge-engineered deals are usually a low-cost, relatively low-risk proposition anyway. If it does take off, then maybe Suzuki might bring R&D in-house for the next-generation model.

The Smart is painted. Red, Blue & Silver Smarts are painted. White, Black & Yellow are molded in those colors.

I think the impact of two smarts colliding would be worse than this truck and a smart. The smarts are more hardened and have less crumple space, making for more reliance on the SRS for cushioning.

The smart doesn’t actually have any paint removed being that the body panels are not painted. The red panels are actually the color of the mold.

The smart has paint taken off from the door area yet the truck does not have any of that red paint on it. Instead it looks like it has an off white or light yellowish color on the driver side front panel.

I wonder how much impact the driver of the smart car felt vs the driver of the light pickup? My question is, what if it would have been a full-size pickup, SUV, or full-size car? Impact is what injurs/kills people, not so much the extent of your vehicle’s damage. If a heavy car/truck hits a light smart car, the driver of the smart car will feel that deadly impact much more than the larger vehicle. Its common physics people. Think about it before you try to argue.

Just so you know Tiff doesn’t present top gear anymore, Its fifth gear that is linked and doing the smart safety bit.

Don’t like the look of that front wheel. Internal damage on the Smart might be worse then expected.

No, I see the contact was made bumper-to-body. The hood damage came from the mirror area of the smart.

It’s impressive, although the plastic skin of the smart is probably concealing more damage BUT the alignment of its body parts and the fact that the PS door glass isn’t even broken? That impresses me most.
-
Remember that the smart has a hardened cage/cabin, and the area just before the door hinges would be one of the strongest parts of the car, whereas steel bumpers on a light pickup dosen’t mean strength anymore. The pickup is meant to crumple in a collision… just the opposite.
-
The more I think of it, the less I’m surprised I guess.
-
Besides, Chrysler better have their shit together with the Smart, otherwise there’ll be a lot of dead and injured and sales will go straight into the crapper, despite its mileage.
-
Listening, China?

I don’t buy it. A + B =! C
The truck looks like it hit a yellow pole. And impact that would do that to the truck would break the Smart’s window and shatter the plastic body panels.
My verdict is that the Smart was not the first object the truck hit.

If it wasnt for that tilted front wheel, that smart could probably drive home.
