Ten Attainable Cars from the 70s

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

I met Joni Gray, Sr. Auto Editor for the LA Times, at NYIAS and she’s cool. And I liked this article she just wrote, Ten Still-Attainable 1970s Muscle Cars, though I hesitate to call many of these cars "muscle cars." The list was selected by Phil Skinner, editor of Kelley Blue Book’s Early Model Values Guide. Obviously, I’ve heard of KBB (value guide basically created to support dealerships) but had never heard of this classic car value guide–maybe cause it’s $60!!!??? Hey, the NADA guide is free and, after comparing the prices listed for a few of these cars, it seems to be pretty close. Anyway, I still thought it was a pretty good list, so here goes:

1973-76 Chevrolet Nova SS
1973 Ford Mustang Mach 1 fastback
1977-78 Pontiac Trans Am coupe
1970-71 Plymouth Duster 340 coupe
1971-73 De Tomaso Pantera coupe
1979 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442/W30 coupe
1975-76 Chevrolet Vega Cosworth ed
1973 Mercury Cougar XR7 convertible
1971-73 Datsun 240Z coupe
1977-79 Chevrolet Corvette T-top coupe

Sign me up for a Duster, a Pantera and maybe even the ’79 442. Click through to Joni’s article to read more about each car and see the pics, and then let us know what you link of the list.

With the recent transformers movie, I suspect you could put the ’78 Camaro up there too. I have a feeling we’re gonna be seeing alot of Rumble Bee replicas. Don’t believe me. Just look at the Mustang world. Every Ford oriented magazine you flip through still has an Eleanor plastered somewhere across the pages.

I had a feeling these cars would catch on sooner or later as good candidates for muscle. I own a 74 nova that we bought about 2 years ago for dirt cheap. My prediction is that these cars will become the next hot muscle rides in the next few years since muscle from the 60′s is so outrageously priced.

+1 on the Cosworth Vega.
.
Those cars are just plain cool.
.
Individually numbered…
.
Those engines were pretty high tech, back in the day…
.
They can still be had for a bargain.
.
Love the black and gold color combination too…

Like most observers, Phil overlooked a couple of AMC muscle cars from the seventies. While a top tier 1970 Rebel Machine can easily cost as much as Pantera, with the best examples going for $50,000 or more, the one-year-only SC/360 1971 Hornet remains a sleeper. If it follows in the footsteps of the 1969 SC/Rambler, expect to see the best examples at least keep pace with his example of the Duster 340. The best SC/360s now command $30,000 or more. And big-motored 401 Javelin AMXs are commanding big dollars. Right now there’s a beautiful, low mileage (7,210 claimed miles) 360ci/285hp 1971 Javelin with a BIN of $24,900. It got no action at a previous start price of $17,595, so what does the seller dealer do? It re-lists the car with an even higher opening bid of $19,595. Does this make sense to you? If you want to take a look at it — and it does look beautiful — the item number is 370041402580. Here’s my take on this one, a year ago, before the subprime meltdown, this would have been an easy sell at $25,000. Someone who was an AMC enthusiast would have written a check against his home equity line and would have driven it home. Now that same AMC enthusiast is probably underwater on his mortgage and can’t write the check or if he still can, is uncomfortable doing so.

I’d have to go with the 240Z, being a Nissan guy myself. A first gen Z is ultimate Z car to own. However, If I had to pick from the other american cars on the list, it’d be the duster 340 no doubt.

out of all those cars, you know what one I would want the most. The Vega Cosworth. My Dad had one before I was born and said it was the most fun car he ever owned, and he had a 79 Z28.
