Wings: Love ‘Em or Hate ‘Em?
By Rob Einaudi
Editor-in-Chief
Normally I hate wings, unless you’re talking about a Superbird. But I almost like this one on Alex’s M Roadster. What do you guys think about wings?

Now guys let me remind you, Wings are like the ones on this BMW. Spoilers are the totally different.

As for looks, it’s a matter of preference. As for function, that depends on the car. The Superbird for instance was a race bred car and needed its wing and nose cone to perform. It’s still one of the most aerodynamic production cars ever produced with a coefficient up there with the best of them. The Trans Am Boss 302s kept their wings and sport slats because they did generate downforce, however minimal. Fast forward 30 yrs and take a look at the ‘00 Mustang Cobra R. I don’t think it could have been the fastest Mustang ever produced without its wing and splitter. Wings and spoilers both deserve their place. My Spirit R/T was equipped with a functional chin spoiler and a non-functional trunk lid spoiler. Looks good there. But if I wanted something functional on either of my Spirits so I could go race, I think I’d need something other than a lip spoiler however disastrous it might look. One problem I have when playing on interstate on ramps is loosing my rear end. That usually happens when the speedo is between 55-60. I don’t get too much understeer because the power is being applied to the wheels that are doing the turning and I added a monte carlo bar to discourage roll. I could fix this in another way, but why spend the money and time convert to AWD when an ugly wing would do? Granted, I would like to do an AWD conversion on a Spirit or Shadow someday. I just don’t have the resources right now.

As said before it really depends on the car for example a show car or a car that gets some racing on the street or weekends i think it’s ok and might even look sexy like the lotus exige (though it comes from factory it’s still a wing) but if u really dont need the wing then just use a spoiler
Anyway there isn’t a wrong opinion or point of view.

I don’t mind the look of most OEM spoilers, but honestly, unless you have a dedicated race car your fooling yourself if you think a spoiler adds to performance. The Mopar Performance Chassis book even says that they don’t have a significant effect until around 100MPH. I will take factory performance literature tested and written by engineers over the anecdotal evidence from peoples personal experience. The fact that most the spoilers I see are on front wheel drive cars is interesting to, because if I am not mistaken most front wheel drive cars suffer from under-steer, and adding downforce to the rear seems like it would worsen this condition.

Wing, Wings, Wings. Where do i start…Lets make a long story short. If your speedometer not gonna see over 120 mph on a regular basis, PLEASE do NOT put it on your ride. I have an EVO 8, and the one of the first thing i did was to get rid of that wing, it looks much sexier W/O it.

i love wings that go with the car like the following wings : eclipse turbo wing,3000gt high sl wing and 99 vr4 wing, celica gts, supra wing, STI, EVO, skyline gtr even the civic si wing and the rsx type-s wing. These OEM wings that go with the body and distinguish the “performance cars” from the stock base cars are great…other then that they’re mostly ugly

if u gonna wing it, make sure it fits the car. i like wings, even the overlly large 1’s on sum cars, but i hate winds that dont mount evenly to the car or are placed to far foward or back of the trunk. that is stupid. its all in the car too. u dont put a wing on a station wagon (seen it b4)! now a skyline gtr with a massive wing dont look to bad.

I’ve been asked that alot and have tested it when I drove down south before and after installing the wing. We put them on our front wheel drive cars because if your drafting a semi at 90MPH our rear end don’t wip around like it does without one. We don’t have any weight in the back, this way it keeps our tires on the ground.

On most cars they look gay as hell. Around my town you know a hispanic is the owner. They are usually highly unneeded look at the new ZR1, or the Vipers, they don’t have wings. Most guys put them on their front drive cars anyway, stupid fucks!

That large of a wing on THAT small of a car is ridiculous. People buy wings on a early 90’s car and think’s it looks cool. Unless you’ve got a very fast car with less weight, its not necessary

i think wings are pretty retarded looking. people put them on and think they have a race car. the funniest thing about wings is that the people who put on the aftermarket ones USUALLY have a fwd car. does anyone else thinks thats a little bit funny??? lets take away from the wheels that actually pull the car.

Well honestly a ride like this or any kind of ride with a HUGE WING like this on this BMW is just plain stupid to even have on it!!! Granted yes its his choice to have on the ride, but I think that just driving around in town or the city with it on is going to CATCH the eyes of thieves or people just laugh it.To me in my eyes unless you’re racing the car and you need a wing for down force to keep the car on the road then great but for just looks then you have a BIG BIRD car and a WING that screams look at me! Look at me! My car can fly!! Please just get a wing that will match the color of the car a low profile one will work very well with his ride other than that BIG BIRD WING

Well wings are good but only if you race your ride and need the downforce, but if your like me and only drive around town you don’t need a wing the size of a airplane cause it can get stolen easily, and it’s a waste of money.

I HATE WINGS! its the stupidest mod anyone can do to their car. unless its a lamborghini or a ferrari in a GT class race where they serve a purpose, there is NO POINT in having one. It really PISSES me off seeing a civic with a huge wing at the end. Little spoilers are good though.

Spoilers are good…wings are bad. When I hear “spoiler”, I think of an appropriately sized aerodynamic tool used to keep the rear rubber on the road — they actually serve a purpose. When I hear “wing”, I think of some asshole with a gigantic aluminum flipper on the back of their car that is usually way too large. Spoilers are great for performance cars, but if i see one more cavalier with a “wing” i’m going to piss on it.

wings are cool if they are the right size on the car. some wings top the roof on a small car. on my 3000GT i could leave the stock wing or if i got on it would be like the 99′ wing or the MR japan version.

hey steve jones i had a 91 cavalier z24 with a low rise double decker adjustable spoiler and the wing saved both my kids life even at 60mph (the speedlimit) because some non-driving old man cut me off and i was able to turn directly off onto an adjacent STREET so even though it did look tacky on my car thank god i had it on there or me, my fience, and both kids would be dead now. oh and if you race on a track good for you at least you have one within a 3state range from you i race in an abondoned military base although it is a street race and open to public its not a track its just a big open piece of public nothing so not all street racing is for idiots some of us have consideration

It all comes down to personal preference. If you like it go for it. Where is the line drawn at whats actually needed? Do you need chrome exhaust tips? Do you need a V-8? Do you need a pick up? Most people on here don’t want to have a car that 100,000 other people have the same thing of, make your car the way/look/performance/style that you want. All of these things always come down to american muslce vs. imports or lowered with rims vs. raised and big tires

I have grown to dislike them so much because I have seen way to many 100 horsepower FWD cars with huge wings. They are doing 17@ 70 MPH what’s the point of having a wing? I’m not saying every car with a wing is slow I’m just saying dumb kids messed it up for the rest of us. And one more thing KNOW WHAT YOUR PUTTING ON YOUR CAR BEFORE YOU DO IT!!!!
and that’s my two cents …

If you have a wing on your car, it means you street race. Yes, wings provide traction by creating downforce, but tell me who is taking corners so fast on public roads that they need traction? Come on, unless you use your car on a race track legally, you should not have a wing. It might look cool, but its stupid because you should not be taking corners faster than the posted speed limit. Street racing is for insecure assholes who think impressing strangers will get you laid.

Apr 23, 2008 at 5:52 am
Oh ya, as for trucks, although I think it looks silly sometimes, it helps big time since there’s no other weight back there to keep the rear wheels from spinning, all about function over form! But that only goes for road-trucks!

This question is really just too generic. My brother owns a 2001 S2K, and he had some suspension, wheel, and frame stiffening mods that added to the handling of his car, but once he added his carbon fiber spoiler, not only did the handling improve, but the grip around fast corners was tremendous due to the down-force the wing created! So in answer to the question, Yes, I love them when they’re used properly and fits the car. No, I hate them when people think throwing an aluminum hunk of metal on a slow, front wheel drive, non-aerodynamic piece of crap is cool!

This question is really just too generic. In the case of a ‘91 4-door Accord, yes I think wings look gay and pointless! Especially on a car that doesn’t even have any tire or suspension mods. The whole point of a spoiler, not wing, is to create down-force on the rear of the vehicle to provide traction. The problem is, people started throwing them on mom and dad’s old Camry and turned it into a ghetto thing. However, if you throw a nice Carbon Fiber wing, such as this one on the M powered Z3, that thing is sure going to make a difference in the handling! My brother owns a 2001 S2K, and he had some suspension, wheel, and frame stiffening mods that added to the handling of his car, but once he added his carbon fiber spoiler, not only did the handling out back improve, but the grip around fast corners was tremendous due to the down-force the wing created! So in answer to the question, Yes, I love them when they’re used properly and fits the car. No, I hate them when people think throwing an aluminum hunk of metal on a slow, front wheel drive, non-aerodynamic piece of crap!

I love reading the comments by idiots that have no idea what they are talking about. A wing on a CAR does not create lift. That would mean your tires would have less traction and last time I checked that is not good. Wings create down force FOR traction idiots. Front-fascia wings do the same for the front wheels.

I like wings so much I put two on. Ok, actually one wing, and a body fit spoiler. Actually I had to put the second one on to cover up the six holes left by the OEM spoiler. But hey, it kinda grows on ya…. Wings are like anything else. Too much is too much, not enough is just sad, but just right makes the ride look, and perform better.

Apr 23, 2008 at 3:22 am
Have you ever driven a 66 charger at85 plus and pass a semi during a slow turn? The charger is a wing shaped car that creates lift at higher speeds. The factory tried to fix this by putting on a 2 3/4 inch aluminum spoiler on the decklids of the 67 hemi cars, and it worked. Thus the spoilers/wing races began ,the factory ones in the late 60 were added for function, within the rules of course. The king of wing is definitely the daytona/superbirds of 69 and 70.After that it was mainly a bling factor, with a few exeptions, vettes, porshes and trans ams .Usually a little goes a long way,it really does matter if you want form or function.

I couldn’t help but crack a smile, looking at the flapping bit o’OEM stupidity before my eyes.

Aside from the styling issues, this is exactly what I wrote earlier, in detail. Either people post without reading or they don’t believe me I guess.
-
FWD cars are front-heavy. That’s okay for grocery-getting, but they need help for track use, and as long as the wing is functional to the extent needed, handling will improve. It might look like hell, but the rear will be planted without using weight ballast, and the only drawback (except perhaps for looking silly to some) will be aerodynamic drag.
-
Moreover, RWD cars could benefit most from extra downforce off the line, since the rear drivetrain offers better weight distribution (less front-heavy)… etc…
-
but hey, don’t take my word for it. The Internet is vast and great for leaning stuff. Google it for yourself.

I put a rear wing on my FWD car at 30 degrees inglination which seem to me the most suitable after testing the car downhills.when i drive it to its limit downhills i know that if i release the throttle on a corner i will loose the rear which is very light on a FWD and i dont want that…after putting the wing on that inglination i feel the rear end stuck to the ground safe even if i release the throttle.i tried it also at 120mph on a straight line before and after…before the cars rear end jumped on every bump of the road and now it stays on the ground where it should be but looses 5-10khm of top speed which i dont care…people mentioning airplanes and ricey things know shit..
Marcus
Apr 23, 2008 at 12:26 am
It really depends on the size of the spoiler. If it’s a huge ass airplane wing a FWD car, the it normally looks tacky, but sometimes a small spoiler does look alright.
mike
Apr 22, 2008 at 11:56 pm
the basic point of a spoiler is downforce on the drive tires for handling and traction. if the spoiler is functional, then you can see if it fits the cars look or not. my personal opinion is almost all cars look better without, even evos and sti’s.

well to his own if you get them for looks and your building a show car….personaly i think they look gay but thats just me. anyway back to my point… all they do is put a little down pressure at high speeds…and its deffinitly not worth it plus i doubt that mosst peole would need it…but other then that it does nothing but add weight and cost money that could be put into performance parts…all thoes danm ricers put a fart cannon and a “wing” on their stupid little 4 banger and call it a day thoes are the people i cant stand their the same assholes that think their car is fast cause it looks and sounds somewhat like the the cars from that fast and the fags movie. they pull up next to my camaro and rev their engines and then talk shit when i woulnt waist my time and gas on them….now im not saying that imports can’t be fast i get my ass handed to me by wrx’s and evo’s all the time…(for now, belive me)…but you know the douchbags i’m talking about and they need to tkae a long drive off a short bridge. that way it will take care of them and their car. oh yeah and by the way if your eclipse or supra or whatever has a stock “wing” then thats ok. well i’m done ranting/waisting my time.

As has been said before, it depends on the car. You’re hardly gonna throw a massive GT wing on a Dodge Charger, but when it comes to an R34 Skyline you can’t go without. And for the few people out there who actually race their cars, decent wings are a must-have to add that little bit of downforce. In this case, the wing looks pretty cool, but a little too high.

I agree…i mean lets face it, some wings out there are just stupid and rediculous looking. All the “i wish i could have a cool car, so im gonna put the biggest spoiler on the back i can find” people are just friggin jokes. But on the flip side, wings tastfully done are nice. you dont really need a big huge ugly wing to get a good look or downforce if thats what your looking for. Most small and subtle wings look better and work just as good…but thats just my take on it…

It’s a nice BMW. I think that wing is a bit much…
Putting that aside I think, like many before said, it depends on the car. But I ABSOLUTELY hate wings that are as big as the one on that BMW just get a nice subtle one… unless you really do need the downforce…

Normally I say wings are for ricers and wannabe tuners. The wing on this car doesn’t look too bad though only because there is no goddy looking body kit or stupid looking graphics. It’s exterior is tastefully done. I think the factory turbo wings on the 2nd generation Eclipse GS-T’s (like mine) or GS-X’s look good. I’m so glad I decided to keep my factory wing on my ‘99 Eclipse GS-T and not go with a “ricer lookin’” aluminum wing. It was cool on the Fast & Furious cars the very first time I watched it BUT THAT’S IT. All-in-all, save the aluminum stuff for pop cans and Hondas LOL.

Wings are useless. Specifically the ones that come stock on cars or are made of that plastic or fibreglass material. Now Aluminum and Carbon Fibre wings are fantastic………if…. you are the kind of guy who is running around the circuit pulling some hot laps. But as for off the track, they look absolutely ridiculous. I say NAY on the wings.
P.S. MK4 Supra Turbo without that rear wing…. looks bitchin and improves aerodynamics.

WTF are you talking about ? Any highspeed vehicle can use a wing if needs the downforce for cornering.
As far as looks go, it depends on the vehicle. I hated the wing on my (aftermarket, prev owner) 300zx so I removed it. I love the stocker on my evo though.

listen;first of all most cars look good with you and some cars dont. The point is most of us like and dislike wings on cars right?i mean it matters on the car.If its a drift car like a 240 or s2k than fine put a wing or dont it would look with either, everyone knows spoilers might have weight on it but most cars it’ll look nice.
If you get a 89 civic and put an exhaust, and a wing that is aluminum than of course its gonna get ugly.
The next point is;if you know how to fix up a car you’ll put the RIGHT wing on it and not some crappy shit.

Well.. my opinion on wings varies depending on the situation.
If the car is a drag car and needs the downforce on the back tires then its all good.
If you have a fully built show car and want to make it look sportier so you put a wing on then i understand.
If your car is BASICALLY stock and you put a wing on it then it SHOULD be ripped off by any driver on the road to help keep RICE off the road.

it all depends on the car and its purpose most of you have made good suggestions but have forgotten the show aspect many fwd cars know that it creates downforce to the rear thus lifting the front end but we do it anyways because of the show aspect some fwd cars that are customized need a spoiler now those big aluminum wings yeah they suck i agree but some fiberglass or carbon wings have a certain look that brings that show car over the top so not everyone is into drag racing or going to a time attack race maybe they like to customize the car so that it doesnt look like the next car parked next to it so i guess IT ALL DEPENDS ON THE RIDE AND THE NEEDS OF THE DRIVER AND IF HE LIKES IT THATS HIS OPINION AND CHOICE NOT YOURS IF YOU WANT T DISS HIM OH WELL IT AINT GONNA CHANGE ANYTHING THATS HIS TASTE IN STYLE SO DEAL WITH I

Well to me there’s 2 types of wings
1)Fiberglass or ABS wings which are factory stock and those look fine with a FWD car
2)Aluminum or Carbon Fiber Wings ok here aluminum wings just don’t look right and added weight and no performance increase as for carbon fiber well again there’s another 2 types the regular OEM look just carbon fiber and the BIG WINGS! the oem carbon fiber wing look fine but the BIG WINGS
Umm yea that’s just to much but people these days add stickers so why not add wings? They both don’t add no performance on your car so JUST PUT IT ON!!!! haha

Personally, I think park benches (wings) are very stupid. I agree with what Josh said that the wings belong on the track, ONLY! For every day driver cars, the only kind of wings or spoilers I’m ok with are stock ones. Otherwise I would go without. Park benches (wings) = shitty…stock or wingless = clean!

Sorry i forgot to post my ride info in the last one
Oh geeze, this one is perfect for me. THANKS CARDOMAIN. YOU DO NOT NEED A FUCKING F1 STYLE SPOILER ON YOU HONDA CIVIC. ITS POINTLESS, LOOKS LIKE A SHOPING CART, MAKES YOUR CAR SLOWER (WEIGHT). ON A FWD CAR, IT ACTUALLY TAKES AWAY FROM PERFORMANCE, YOU NEED DOWNFORCE ON THE FRONT TIRES BY ADDING DOWNFORCE TO THE REAR TIRES, YOU GET LESS TRACTION. ive seen plenty of cars that have the ability to run 13s, but because of their wing run 14s. if you do your research the ones on the superbird and the 1969 trans ams they actually give downforce, on a civic no. if you want looks get a spoiler, not a wing. because putting this on your car people will laugh profusly and you will probably get your car keyd. thanks for your time.

For street driven cars they just look stupid. Wings belong on the track. I can’t help but to laugh when I see them on FWD cars.

It depends on the ride, if you have a performance oriented ride then yes. For a daily driver though i would say no.

I’d take a wing to the track, but for me to take one on the street, well I think that would depend on the car. I’m not so sure either of my Spirits would look great at a cruise in with one. Well I definitely know my daily driver wouldn’t seeing the battered condition it’s in. I would use some type of functional spoiler or wing on the track though seeing I could benefit around the corners and keep my back end planted on the bunny hills as well.

I think wings look great on cars that need them, like high-powered rear-wheel drive cars. Examples include Supras and Vipers.
.
Wings look stupid on under-powered front-wheel drive cars, like hon-duh civics.

Wings are ok, IF THEY SERVE A PURPOSE! A massive wing on a daytona or superbird, ok. But a wing on your ‘93 civic? HELL NO!

A wing that creates downforce puts pressure on the tires to help with adhesion unlike adding weight which would exert pressure but would counter that by adding more lateral weight in curves. Does this make sense?
-
The drawback with a wing (that works) is drag, which has to be compensated with some horsepower.
-
A rear wing on a FWD car BENEFITS because the rear wheels will be planted better in high-speed corners. DON’T WORRY about the front wheels because there’s an engine and transmission exerting weight on them!
-
If anything, FWD cars may need to have rear wings MORE because there’s nothing back there except for suspension, brakes and tires. The transmission is rotated and more forward, there’s no driveshaft. There’s no differential. FWD cars are more prone to being FRONT HEAVY.
-
Any more ’splaining needed to clear this up? I hope this settles this.

So….this is a touchy subject. The thing is, if it’s actually functional, we’re cool. But if it’s not, then NO. This is what kills me, and most people don’t think about this one, WHY are you going to put a wing, which creates more downforce, on the BACk of a FRONT-WHEEL drive car???? Isn’t that going to take traction AWAY from the tires…???? Hmmmm……wow makes since, in yet noone thinks of that when they put these 3-foot tall wings on it.

The wing on this green thing looks like it would create downforce. It’s far enough back and high enough to get a decent amount of air IMO. I wouldn’t be seen on the street with that though.

Got news for many (according to all the posts I read). The vast majority of stock wings are for looks only. Lots of aftermarket wings don’t even do much if anything.
-
I also read someone questioning the use of a wing on a FWD car. If you’re talking top fuel, where otherwise it would melt the tires halfway down the track then RWD defenitely needs a wing back there. Aside from that though, rear wings create downforce to help keep the rear tires planted around high-speed curves. Of course if it’s an ineffective wing, that only hurts because more weight was added at the rear of the car for no reason.

depends on the car, and how in your face the wing is. a small trunk lid or or low profile color matched wing adds style. A a huge aluminum wing sitting a foot off the roof of a civic hatchback is just a crime.

It depends on the car I think, or how the guy customized his car, if it is a stock “crappy” car and has a wing on it, nooo. but if he took time to make the car look good than in depends on the type of car like a Evo, Celica, Civic etc…

only the right wing for the right car. preferably a short one

Wings are ok to a point, and I fear this one is beyond that point. Like anything else, it has to match the rest of the car, and this one is way too tall.

It depends on the car. The one on that Z3 looks pretty good b/c it goes with the whole theme. But just throwing a wing like that on a plain car, like a Cavalier or Civic, is just stupid. I’m more of a subtle lip-spoiler guy myself.

I think the best wings for any car are the stock ones that were designed specifically for them.
No one wants to see any more park benches on the back of Civics.

It has to flow with the car, as the one on that Z3 doesn’t.

Wings only belong on purpose-built race cars.
Remember when people were putting Supra-style spoilers on everything? A Neon with a Supra spoiler is just sad.
I’ve never understood why people put wings on FWD cars.
The right lip spoiler can finish off a car, a wing will ruin just about every car’s lines.

Big erector set wings? If the car is set up for the track I think that’s great as long as it actually generates downforce and its scaffolding dosen’t create too much drag.
-
As a styling accessory? I have yet to see wings like these look good on the street. Most of the time they’re a punchline to a majority of folks ‘cept for the youngsters.
-
If I sometimes raced a street car and a huge wing were of benefit, I’d have two trunklids I’d just swap when needed… one for street, one for track. The QM though? No point to a wing, nothing but drawback. Would have to be for high-speed curves or what’s the point?

He should have just molded a small spoiler to the top of the trunk, inconspicuous OEM euro-style. The wing makes this once amazing deutsch import look very JDM.
