I bought a 2008 Solstice GXP. It’s faster, quieter, it rolls less in corners, handles better, and is much more comfortable to drive long distances in than an MX-5. It has an Aux cable plug in for the radio, the MX-5 did not.

I’m a mechanic with Mazda and I have to tell everyone here, the solstice is the far better vehicle for competition, a better frame and suspension, a better engine that will handle far more modification, in fact that 2.0 is a mechanical marvel

to those of you that think the Miata handles as nicely or better then the solstice, that’s because your are so high in the seat…in addition, the car has such small wheels you feel like you’re cornering faster when you’re not close, the solstice is a heavier feeling ride and this has more to do with the seat position then the curb weight

as far as interior, the miata and creature useability the miata is clearly the winner, for instance the top works so much better and the electric windows are somewhere you don’t have to dislocate your shoulder to use

I traded my “girly” Mustang GT for a Solstice. Would never go back as it is ten times more fun. I couldn’t fit comfortably in the Miata at 6 feet 2 inches. Felt more “go carty” to me. Love the Solstice and plan to buy another when I run this one into the ground. So far 53,900 miles without a single problem.

I’ve sold both, and driven both at Road Atlanta. The MX-5 is a much better quality vehicle, and much more competent on the track.

Solstice for looks. What’s with the luggage space comments? If the question was which car is more practical for a family vacation, neither car would win and we’d vote for a mini-van. If I’m choosing between the two, the Solstice has more style, so I’d vote Solstice.

First off I would like to say that both car are easy on the eyes from a distance. The Solstice with its sporty race car looks, and the more refined look of the Miata.
But step closer and the Solstice just cant compete, it doesn’t have the fit and finish quality of the Miata. Many of the Sol’s parts just look cheap, shame on GM for producing such a sexy little vert with such poor quality!
Now the Miata on the other hand is a great little car. The quality is there, it’s fun to drive, and it has the optional hard top. I seriously considered purchasing one of these top knotch little cars last year, but a 2-seater is just not practical for me. However, if a second car was feasible, the Miata would definately share space in my driveway!

I would have to pick the Miata. Mazda has proven themselves in road racing time and time again. Besides the Solstice is just GIRLY! If the options were the Miata and the Saturn Sky, then I might consider the aggressive angular design of the Saturn rather than the passive “The convertible helps my nail polish dry faster” rounded look of the Solstice and Miata. This is of course just in looks alone. Performance I think I would still lean toward the Miata. There is an endless after market supply of parts and hop-ups that are reasonably priced for the Miata. Although….a Sky with a Corvette drivetrain….Now your talkin’!!!

I chose the Solstice for the looks and the cornering. My son has a Miata. The Miata is easier and safer to drive, but it doesn’t give you that exotic racing feel. When I corner fast in the Miata, it feels like I’m on the edge of its abilities, which produces a certain exhileration. When I corner fast in the Solstice, it feels solid and in control, like it’s taunting me to go faster. I can see where it is a personal choice on how you like to feel when going fast around corners. You can’t beat the Solstice for looks. It’s got that retro-Maserati/Jag, Cobra, modernized Austin Healy vibe.

I agree with Stewart, GM is there own devil essentially. They focus too much on trucks. I haven’t looked at Miata, but the Solstice is a bit too narrow, at least their going to build a hardtop. Why go after market with a s/c at only 220hp vs 260 turbo 2.0 stock???

As a Miata owner I have to say the MX5. I looked at the Solstice but a couple things kept me away…lots of cheap plastic components that reminded me of my Fiero days, the top operation and the trunk space with the top down.

I ran into a guy about 3 months after I bought my 06. He had his top down and the Soltice looked very nice…until I walked up to the car to see all his luggage shoved into the passenger side because it would not fit into the trunk.

Both cars are great and I like any 2 seat convertible. But I had to go with what I know and what has not left me straded on the side of the road after driving it hard.

Ask any autox-er out there, they’ll tell you thats a tough decision, either one is a winner, depends on how good you are. Take a look at the name though, thats my choice.

I think they like to be called MX5′s now, but I love my NA Miata. It is one of the most modifiable cars out there, you hardly ever see one that isn’t. There are purists out there, to be sure.
The engine was built to hold boost and the aftermarket industry has anything conceivable to make it look/drive better (and for dirt cheap, too).

I have a 2007 Mazda MX-5 Miata and love it! I would rather have the Saturn Sky, but could not afford it! I think the Solstice has an ugly front end and you have to get out of the car to put the top down..GRRR!

as a pontiac tech i have to go with the solstice. from a performance standpoint the soltice is more responsive and alot more fun to drive. however since it’s still very new they have a few kinks to work out. the miata has been around longer and thus has simple things worked out. another downfall of the solstice is when the top is up it’s like peering out of a tank window…. but they are a lot of fun to drive.

First to deepwater, yes Motor Trend did a comparo with the Solstice GXP in it, not the N/A solstice. and the Miata was not in that comparison, it was a 350Z. But anyway, those who are dissing on these cars clearly do not understand what they are about-pure driving. Driving with the top down, wind in your hair, slicing up a winding country road. You don’t need power tops, or all the other extras that mainly add weight to do this. Yes they don’t have 300 hp, but on the kind of road that they are intended for, they will leave almost all 300hp cars in the dust. I would have to go with the Miata, because Mazda has been in this game a lot longer, and has figured out all the little thing that make a small roadster great.

Personally, I don’t look the looks of the solstice. If the trademark Pontiac kidney beans in the grill were recessed about 1/2 to 3/4″ then it would look better. Along with a redesign of the headlights. It just looks like a flying shoe on 19′s.

This really is a tough one. I really like the Solstice. I think it has much better styling than the current MX-5, but the MX-5 has a much better reliability and aftermarket support.

I’d have to drive both to be sure, but I think I’d end up going with the Solstice. However, if this were a Sky vs Miata, I’d probably go Saturn (And I swore after owning my SL2, I’d never buy another Saturn again… Times change I guess).

This is actually a tough one. I’d go MX-5 (the new name for the Miata) because there is more of an aftermarket for it and you can really do things with it right now instead of waiting for aftermarket parts.

Miata, Just can’t stand the Solstice Honeycomb Front end. Besides there is a company in Vancouver that makes drop in V8′s for Miata’s!!!

Miata…I actually fit in it, whereas the Solstice is bigger, heavier, and has less space for the driver. Great design GM.
