Will a RWD Coupe Dilute the Subaru Brand?

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

Two weeks back we told you about the new RWD coupe that Subaru and Toyota are developing together. Well, it sounds like some people (including some folks at Subaru) are worried that this new car may dilute the brand (source: Autoblog). I understand the concern, but I think it’s a bit shortsighted. First of all, I think that the Tribeca did more to dilute the Subaru brand than a RWD coupe could. Second of all, gas prices are going up, and if Subaru sticks to AWD cars with sucky gas mileage, they’re gonna be in trouble. They should probably add a cheap FWD econobox to their lineup, and it’s about time that someone built an affordable RWD 2+2 coupe–personally, I’m glad that Subaru is the one that’s gonna do it. Sure, they will have to market it correctly, but ultimately I think it will be good for Subaru and the Subaru brand. What do you guys think?

I think it would make subaru look better if they made the 2 door RWD car. The sales would probelly go up. It all depends on the size of the engine and the exterior and interior of the car.

I can’t see how it would dilute their product lineup. The last time they had a sweet two door coupe (i believe?) was the SVX in the 90s. Although troubled with transmission and other problems it was still a sweet car. It fills a niche they don’t currently have and would put them in the market another type of auto racing.
Msybe toyota will use it for the next celica.

im not sure about the subie but with gas prices it could find a niche. and like chris mentioned a SCION TC REPLACMENT that has RWD would be increabable! BRING BACK RWD FOR US YOUNG GUYS! FWD sux

Heres my definition:
~
FWD is for Commuters
~
RWD is for Drivers (me)
~
AWD is for Racers
~
Now I only say this because the only positive thing I’ve ever heard about FWD is that you get better gas milage due to less drivetrain power loss and that their good in the snow. You cant beat the handeling of AWD for pure track performance, and the reason I say RWD is for Drivers is because when it comes down to it we only like RWD for its lauch like accelleration, tire liquification, and Drifting jubilation. Am I wrong ?

My concern is how they are going to differentiate the two. Why would I buy the Toyota over the Subaru and vice-versa? Here’s how I think they should work it. I have a sneaking suspicion that this is going to be the tC replacement. That being said, make it cheap like a Scion (far under 20k)with a bunch of standard features but make it youthful and extremely moddable and tuneable (not words, but you get it). Basically, keep it Scion. Now, take the same vehicle and up-scale it for Subaru. Leather, nav, nice sound system, softer ride, more refinement, etc. Suddenly, the same vehicle targets every age group for the car. I had this discussion with my dad. He’s 55, and he mentioned that Scion’s are too young for him. A Subaru on the other hand fits the bill perfectly. With the right design and marketing, I think they can pull this off. Yea, it may not be all wheel drive, but as Jonathan said, don’t let the drivetrain define you, let the engineering do that. Therein lies the key that I hope both of these companies can figure out. I know one thing…I think I’m going to hold onto my tC until I see what unfolds. If this is the new tC replacement, who can I give the deposit to?

P.S. don’t let a drive train define you. Let the engineering do that.

Bottom line is whoever makes it, if it has a Subaru boxer engine power plant it will be much better than any I4 on the market. The lower center of gravity is a priceless commodity when it comes to extreme handling. I may be a little hung up on the RWD GTS Corolla platform but when since the mid 80′s has a RWD 2+2 sports coupe been produced with a reasonable price tag and darn near 50/50 split front to rear? I assure you if they build it, it will sell. Thoughts are just zipping around my head, remember the Scion TC rwd they posted on the blog not so long ago, looks like a great idea to me, throw in the ’08 Japanese STi 2.0L boxer motor could easily make greater than 300hp at the wheels and enough torque to melt more rubber in an hour than the entire adult industry in a year. Especially if they play it smart avoid “high end luxury features” and keep the weight down between 2500 and 3000lbs. Of course the aforementioned package could keep the mpg in the 20 somethings with out any tweaking I’m sure all the tech gurus in the automotive industry could get it up government mandated standards, hopefully with an adjustable tuning so we can crank up the power when we want and the gas consumption down when we need. Heck, just give me an decent idea of what the specs may be keep the price tag under $20k and I’ll send in my first $10k payment right now, I don’t care who I have to rob to do it.

Oh, and make sure you leave plenty of room for some sickly offset uber light weight 18″ rims please. Some on get ready for the after market goodies

It could be a god damn rear drive Kia for all I care… as long as it gets its power from its rear haunches Im all for it!
