Burly Audis Give Iron Man's Stunt Team Headaches

By John Coyle

The trailers for Iron Man look awesome, and with Robert Downey Jr. in the lead, I’m confident the big screen adaptation will deliver the goods. But as it turns out, the stunt team had a lot more trouble with some of the car shoots than they anticipated. In the clip below, the storyboard called for the R8 to flip, but like a stubborn puppy, Audi’s halo car just didn’t want to roll over. And when they tried use mechanical claws rip the roof open like a tin can? You guessed it. The German steel just wouldn’t cooperate. In another scene, a Q7 was supposed to come skidding to a halt, and as you can imagine, the Audi’s anti-lock brakes kept bringing the crossover to a nice, controlled stop. Apparently, German engineering doesn’t dig drama. Enjoy the clips.

Yeah this seems more like the lack of preparation than a testamate to Audi. Its a sports car that 4ft tall by 6ft wide, of course its going to be hard to flip.

I agree with GT Wildfire, the roof is the stongest part of a car most times, you need to weaken it if you want it to look like cheese.

That dosen’t make sense. Are they trying these stunts with bone-stock cars? If so, no wonder they’re having trouble.

Want skidding scenes? well duh… gotta disable antilock however they can. Want a roof’s steel to give? Gotta get beyond the headliner and thin the steel with a grinder and remove certain bracing or replace the roof entirely with something that will do exactly what’s required.

Cars are set up for movie shoots all the time, to do what’s needed for just about any situation required. Are they skimping on that? Sure sounds like it.
