Cadillac CTS-V vs. Audi RS 4: Which Would You Choose?

By Rob

Editor-in-Chief

GM really stepped up to the plate with 2009 Cadillac CTS-V. I mean, come on, 550 hp!!! It seems to be aimed squarely at the BMW M5, but will be priced a lot lower–probably in the mid-$60k range. I had to look around a bit for a worthy challenger in that price range, and finally (with Sean’s help) came up with the Audi RS 4. Now, the Audi only delivers 420 hp, but you get AWD and "German engineering." So, which would you choose, the Caddy or the Audi?

caddillac f course, all audi`s are boring and ugly ones.

I’d have to agree with Ryan on the interior – see for yourself… check the compare photos at autos.msn.com between the 2008 RS4 and 2008 CTS, the CTS is the clear winner if you ask me… besides, all that extra horsepower on a car that was already neck and neck with the RS4 when it only had 400? No question if you ask me. CTS.

I’ve ridden in new A4s and the new CTS and I don’t understand those who say that the Audi has a nicer interior… unless they’re sipping some kool-aid. Not only is the switchgear in the Caddy at least as good, the design is lightyears ahead of the early 2000s (and conservative then) interior of the Audi. I LOVE Audi’s but the sedan A4 platform is hardly anybody’s benchmark anymore (accept maybe for the AWD). Finally, I wouldn’t be so quick to write off the track performance of the CTS – AWD is never and automatic. I’d bet that the Audi is easier to drive on the track, but a skilled driver would run circles around the RS4. And don’t get me started on reliability. CTS-V for me.

I’d take the Audi. It might be slower and more expensive, but it’s got the security of AWD, and a far nicer, higher quality interior than GM could ever manage to put into the CTS. Also, I prefer the Audi’s more low key looks – the CTS-V is just a little bit too showy, vulgar and “new money” for my liking.

Btw, this isn’t a remotely fair match-up – 414bhp 4.2V8 vs 550bhp 6.2V8 has the numbers stacked waaaaaaaaay in the Caddy’s favour. Try pitting the 550bhp CTS-V against the 573bhp Audi RS6 on a track and see which is victorious – the Audi, no shadow of a doubt.

Audi is the better car of the two. Just the fact that Caddy BENCHMARKED their car on German designs speaks volumes…Germans innovate, Japanese/Domestic imitate.

Having owned an SVT COBRA, and wanting the domestics to do what they do in a new way, and now owning a Cayman, I find the CTS-V on my radar, not so much for what it can’t do, but for what it represents. The audi interior has been a strong point for a decade, but I still need that RWD thrill to make the day to day burn interesting. If I want total confidence, I would ride the bus. Oh, wait, to work in town, I do.

The Audi all the way Cadillac sucks and wish they built nice cars. German engineering that can go 400,000 kms(250,000 miles) when an American car can do pull this off with every single car then I might consider a GM or Chevy but until then imports forever!

Dear Brainless Cadillac Blowhards:

Duh – “caddy” “caddy”.

You make me want to punch myself in the face and vomit.

It is the RS4 all the way, as you get more car for your money and it won’t breakdown in 1 year. I can’t count the ways it destroys the “over the hill” old man hot rod/garbage sedan that is now marketed towards women. That car is so confused on what it is trying to be it is no wonder you are choosing it. If the world was a dry staight line I would love the “caddy” (man that reminds me of some grandpa)

God I hate the “hey man – Detroit rules – Euro cars suck”. That pretty much tells me you never graduated high school and you own a piece of shit and despite being a “car guy” you didn’t do well in auto shop.

The CTS is a nice car and powerful, it has my respect but pound for pound it is the RS4. Simply more car for the money.

It is like comparing a running back with a pentathlete (if you hillbillies know what one is).

If somebody spilled a cup of water on the street the CTS would fly off the road.

I love the fact that many US automakers have historically referred to interior finish as the “Audi benchmark”. The Cadillac brand has come a long way and the new CTS is proof of that. BUT- it’s going to take a few solid years of delivering a quality product for GM to boast about “beating Audi” or BMW or Mercedes for that matter. Caddy’s V line has a long way to go on many levels. Be real- GM just posted BILLIONS in losses this week. They’re on a decent path- but far from “winning” anything.

The CTS-V is deffenlty the way I would go. It’s goin to be cheaper than the RS4, prices are starting around 50k compared to 66k. Why would you waste that much money for less performance and just as nice interior as the caddy? Looks likes the european engineers are starting to slip on their cars.

*when I said “On the track, the CTS-V probably would…” in the comment below, I meant “On the drag”

Laine
May 2, 2008 at 5:45 pm

Ok, first off, you have to differentiate whether you would want the CTS-V in a drag, or on the track. Hands down the RS4 would beat the Caddy on the track, I mean, really? Audi has one of the if not the best AWD systems available to date. On the track, the CTS-V probably would beat it with that large increase in power, however, one thing to take into account is if those extra horses really helped based on the gearing, suspension, etc. It may just mean more tire spinning power, which will not help it off the line, just hurt. However, figuring that the Caddy mechs took all this into account, they did make a faster drag car than the RS4, and others for that matter, so I think the CTS-V would win a drag. Another thing to keep in mind–it all comes down to the driver–a good driver will beat a crappy one in either car, anyday. If you suck at driving, and the other guy is good, then it doesn’t matter whether he is in the RS4, and you in the Caddy, or vice versa. So go learn to drive if you can’t already.

AUDI RS4 all the dam way…not only you gettin power but a dam nice interior too…No american car can even match up close with a German engineered car…in and out…its just pure facts…screw the caddy…GM can keep their piece of junk

matt
May 2, 2008 at 3:48 pm

anyone who says that caddy is any kind of joke (especially to that audi) is an idiot. just based on pure specs i would take the caddy. the old cts-v with 400 horses had a 4.6 0-60 time. thats .2 seconds faster than the 4.8 second 0-60 of the 420hp audi. the audi hasnt changed and now the caddy has added another 150 horses! this isnt rocket science. its the facts.

do some research and know what you are talking about before you go running your mouth on nothing but reputation.

Sameir
May 2, 2008 at 4:44 am

I think both are great. But I will go with the CTS-V. Its projected to be the fastest production sedan do date! Faster than the M5 and S65. That’s a great package, plus the interior is done really well (and I’ve seen all that the germans have to offer from porsche to benz). Get the chrome accents powdercoated, the windows tinted, a flowmaster exhaust and you’re done!

The Audi is a mean lil’sucker too with the widebody, but it has been around for a couple years and once Audi’s get facelifts the previous model looks wayy old.

May 2, 2008 at 4:09 am

Fastest 4-door car, RWD and front engine = M5
Mike, GTO is 2-door, and this is 4 door competition.
Plus, any 4-door AMG Benz or Any BMW M series can beat ur GTO,
take it down to the candystore and hold it by the hand like a little kid.
I mean it’s pointless talking bullshit, and arguing, all cars r good, people from America like domestics, some dont, some do.People from Europe r pulling more towards Europian cars, some like the muscle as well, besides Europian.
American muscle is something else and whole other planet, my fav is 67-69 Camaro, i admit it!
Some other ones too, such as Mustang, Dodge,Chevy old school, i like them.
Technology is fucking shit, we r not here to say whats better whats not.
Question was, which one would u rather take, vote for ur fav!
I still have my votes for RS4!
And i respect Cadillac guys!
We r all car enthusiasts, some like this, others like that end of story :) !!!
Correct me if i’m wrong :) )))

mike, one more time
May 2, 2008 at 2:54 am

Actually I’d just take the Caddy to piss off the Audi guys and other retarded haters, who are too fuckin dumb to know what’s good and bad. I don’t hate on the euro cars, why don’t ya just prove ur shit on the track. Haven’t met a euro car to keep with a GTO where I live. As far as interior goes that’s all personal choice and domestic guys know how to work on their own cars, most guys in euro cars don’t know how to unlatch the hood. fucknuts!

mike
May 2, 2008 at 2:44 am

Audi is one the Euro cars I like. Plus it’s awd, but I am a GM guy, but prefer the way the regular CTS’s look. It’s a toss up, but owning GM, I’d go for the caddy, probably would have to flip a coin.

Austin
May 2, 2008 at 2:18 am

I’d take the Caddy, but I’d really like to see Ford do something like this with the Lincoln MKZ. Just make it RWD and 500-something horsepower with some performance styling. That would definately bring attention to the Lincoln brand.

THIS IS ONE OF THE BETTER MATCH UP I’VE SEEN IN AWHILE. BUT HAVING HAD A VOLKSWAGON BEFORE AND A CHEVY, I HAD WAY LESS PROBLEM WITH THE CHEVY AND I DIDN’T HAVE TO GO TO A DEALER FOR SIMPLE TUNE UPS. SO I CHOSE THE CTSV, JUST NOT THAT COLOR.

May 1, 2008 at 10:42 pm

I’ve driven both, took a little trip as well with both, about 1300km one way.I’ve been riping them both too, and i have to say AUDI RS4, the looks of it, that sexy line it has, shifts nicer then CTS-V, all wheel drive feels nice and comes in handy. The other thing, someone mentioned it already, the Interior,an Audi has more of pticey interior and it’s not as simple looking as Caddillac’s.
Sporty looking —> http://tinyurl.com/2hk85n more stylish
New School Grandpa looking —> http://tinyurl.com/5brqcv just too simple and what the fuck is up with these cup holders, i didnt see any use for them, just stupid, where is the hamburger holder?!?!
By the way, i drove an Audi R8 too, nothing like a diesel powered V-10 says more then this beast. My friends dad had it for a day, Audi dealership gave it to him cause he bought one, and before the purchase he got it for a day to enjoy it.It is a truly dream car, something American’s can only dream about, never mind some stupid Cadillac!
I vote for Audi RS4!!!
Nothing says power and engineereng like German cars!!!

rs4 all day i bet its faster around the track if it doesnt understeer to badly. and i believe the cts-v has a 6.2 thats a good engine but has alot of torque down low and i bet it would just spin those tires all day. those audis are way more luxurious to and they worked out alot of the electrical problems compared to previous s4 and rs4

JJJ
May 1, 2008 at 4:07 pm

Both are sick cars, and its a hard choice. The CTS-V may be faster than the RS-4, but given the engine size, it should be much faster. Compared to the RS-4s 4.2 liter, the CTS-Vs 6.2 liter should be more impressive! the Germans have a way with getting more power out of smaller engines! just look at Porsche for example, with the exeption of the Carrera GT, the 911’s are all 6 cylinders. German Engineering all the way!!

May 1, 2008 at 1:10 pm

First of all these cars were not meant to be matched up with each other. Cadillac made this car to compete with the BMW M5 and E63 Mercedes Benz. But if I had to choose I would buy the Audi. Driving a Cadillac makes me feel like my grandfather, and it doesn’t matter what kind of engine it has!

Great… another lame car rolling off the production line from Gen. Motors. Call me when they get smart about making cars.

The audi is going to be 10 times more worth the money. 1-its german engineering 2-the interior isnt going to be filled with the cheap crappy plastic and fake leather that GM uses. 3-All Wheel Drive 4-Corvettes and their engines arent all they are cracked up to be.

Wow this is a hard one for me because right now I am trying to decide between a used CTS-V and a 06 A4 but I think im going to have to go with the CTS because of the high horse power and rear wheel drive. Plus on top gear they had these same cars going at it at the track and the CTS won.

The CTS-V and the ZR1 are the only
two cars that I have any respect for
that GM currently builds…
.
The ZR1 is a pipe-dream for me…
.
The CTS-V…
A used one anyway, might just happen
a few years down the road…
.
Sorry Audi-philes, but your car doesn’t
stand a chance against THIS Caddy.
.
The CTS-V handles too ;)

This is no choice at all. 550HP, a six-speed manual and RWD? Caddy all the way. Oh, and the Clash never wrote a song about an Audi:
