Decotora: JDMs Disco Secret
By Ben Schaffer
Bulletproof Automotive
Sure, were a little embarrassed by the Disco generation. Yet the Bee Gees and John Travolta continue to be popular to this day. Decotora is kind of like JDMs Disco cousin. Recently I got inspired by the beautiful photos of Tatsuki Masuras book. So I thought Id post some Decotora photos I dug up.
Decotora got its start in the Disco era, specifically the 1975 Japanese movie Trucker. These trucks are interesting enough during the day, but at night theyre incredible! Id love to see one of those in the US at night. People would freak out–I suspect they would cause car crashes. Tons more pics after the jump.
You cant help but enjoy the Pakastani version of the Decotora as well. I wonder what Pakasani bosozoku cars look like? LOL.

I was wondering earlier why all the scaffolding above the windshield, but the first picture clearly shows why… to use the windshield to reflect the lights above so they’re seen from the front.

The first pic is the best, but some of this is pretty awesome, much more entertaining that some of the “art cars” I’ve seen…

definitely a test of open-mindedness. Of course I wouldn’t own or drive something like this (least not nearly this lit up) but I think some of these are pretty awesome.

Just another artform. It is what it is…

Pakistani (and all south Asian Countries all the way to Indonesia) have their transports painted, as well as their rickshaws; bycicle and motorized pedicabs.
It stems from decoration on pack animals such as elephants and camels.

Funky and yet odd. Still to each their own. Being a bit of a Christmas nut those would be cool at Christmas!!! I can’t imagine trying to clean one of those things…

I like them for their originality. I personally would never spend that much money to make a vehicle look like that, but the owners are definitely respectable.
