Hitting the Wall: smart's IIHS Crash Test

By John Coyle

Editor

The National Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s crash test of smart’s fortwo has leaked, and the results are pretty impressive. But maybe I shouldn’t be so surprised. After all, Rob posted about a collision between a Nissan truck and a fortwo a couple of weeks back, and the micro-machine more than held its own. What do you think? Would you be worried about driving a smart?

I wouldnt feel safe in something like a vette or older model civic, much less one of these.

I guess i’m just more of a truck guy. (I’d still take a vette though ;) )

If I owned one, I’d stick a Hayabusa engine in it. If you haven’t seen it you should DEFINITELY youtube it. But either way, I wouldn’t feel safe in one.

Well, I didn’t like them before cuz I thought they would be crushed on impact, but after I saw that pic I can say I’m more confident in them. That would be so tight to tune up a Smart and make it really fast, just imagine the look on someone’s face when you came flying by at 160 mph in a Smart car!

Sure the car stays relatively intact…. but will you?

I don’t like how far it travels after the impact at all. That’s a long way to go completely out of control.

Looks pretty safe, but I’d still avoid highways if I owned one.
