I Still Don’t See the Point

By Dan Strohl

Hemmings Motor News

Last year, both Jen and I wrote about artist Jonathan Schipper, a self-proclaimed artist who baffled us by one of his creations, a gear-driven machine that slowly pushed two 1/18th-scale muscle cars together in a twisted slow-motion Ballardian statement of some sort. I earned a degree from college in something I can actually make money at, not in art, so I guess I don’t have the capability or pretentiousness to understand that statement.

What really made me cringe last year was the vague threat that Schipper promised to recreate the creation on a full-size scale with two actual muscle cars. And it appears he did just that recently in Belgium, though he used two cars that fall outside the bounds of the traditional definition of muscle: a 1988 Monte Carlo and a 1992 Camaro RS. Not to say that I don’t appreciate late rear-wheel-drive Montes or third-gen Camaros, but at least he didn’t use a second-gen Trans Am and a Hemi Charger, as he did in his first piece.

Still, I don’t get it. He did all of this so he could take an elaborate time-lapse video and speed it up? And if he’s going to make a statement such as he did in the title of the piece, then he should back it up with, ohidunno, an actual argument. Maybe this is actually some sort of stunt in which he shows how easy it is to get gallery space and, possibly, public art funding.

For those of you all offended about the nice cars being smashed – watch the videos. They’re really not that nice. One of them has all kinds of rust on the body, and they don’t have engines. You can see through the engine compartment when the hood buckles, and it’s empty.

“Ha ha ha” at all of you getting butt hurt at two NOT RARE chevy cars get crushed for art. So if someone built one of those up for a movie and blew it up, you would cry about that too? You apparently do not know how much that happens for art. Movies are art too, by the way.

I like it. This guy is a genius.

Jerry
May 10, 2008 at 1:00 am

This guy isn’t a criminal. The producers of The Dukes of Hazzard are the real classic muscle car mass murderers. D’you know how many 68 and 69 Chargers they trashed?! Now THAT’s something to get mad about. Akin to chopping up brand new P-51D Mustangs, just because the jet age was approaching. How stupid can people be?!! I mean, that’s arguably more stupid than trying to cash a check for $360 billion!

i did a little research on his “car art” and he also used two second gen firebirds and one was in great condition the other wasnt too bad. now that ticks me off at least use two completely hopless cars. not cars in good conditions.

Anonymous
May 9, 2008 at 11:39 pm

I like it. I think the fact that it happens over six days and too slowly for the motion to be visible is very clever. A very slow motion wreck. It would be interesting to see the deformation of the cars at many different stages.

I don’t care what cars he’s using so long as they’re not extremely rare cars of true historical significance. Lot’s of Chevys and other cars get wrecked or go to the crusher every day. Those who are anthropomorphising these cars and bemoaning their fate are just being silly.

The only problem I have with it is from an engineering standpoint; the cars would usually crash in the nose down position and the rear ends would come up, not the fronts. But for the sake of art that’s probably irrelevant.

glen
May 9, 2008 at 9:46 pm

Wow he should be shot. How can you ruin a 88 monte carlo and from the looks of the nose a SS model. Somone kill him. And in doing that he ruins a Camaro RS Which is a 25th anniversary model since all 92′ RS camaros were considered anniversary model. How would he like if we took european cars adn crushed them for art. he may be self proclaimed but he is an idiot for ruining two perfect cars. i mean a teenager could of bought one and made a great car out of it, but not anymore

CaysE
May 9, 2008 at 9:37 pm

That ‘92 RS has the wrong wheels.

If this was like a real Ferrari FFX and a Bugatti Veyron, then I’d be impressed.

May 9, 2008 at 4:26 pm

All the artist wants is some attention brought to his work, be it negative or positive. I love how Mr. Strohl uses the term “self proclaimed artist.” Of course he is. Everyone is an artist these days. So, The question becomes not “is it art?” but “is it good art?”

I think it has it’s value, but I would not do it!

80s camero $1500
80s monte carlo $1200
rail road ties some bolts chains ang gears and a big motor $2500
a big lump of usless crap in your yard priceless!

art has a message a reason, whats the reason for this (art) ?
if his goal was to make people talk about it and have any emotion, anger or humor or hapiness then he has made art I geuss!

Yea, definitely not a Datsun of any kind. That’s a through and through Monte. I admit that I’m not a big fan of either of those cars, but it does hurt that he used a pair of nice cars. Now, if they were in crap-tastic condition, that would be another story. I say we get any members that are near him to go and show him what we all think of his so-called ‘art.’

Good. They used shitboxes. One less guido cruisin around in the Camaro, and one less redneck with a mullet and a Monte terrorizing the bar strips.

May 8, 2008 at 6:21 am

To bad for the cars! I`m openned to different kinds of art but this time it hurts too see that. Even though they are not the new ones but I like the design of those car generation, especially Camaros. Not to mention that there are lot, lot.. other brands and year as classics..I live in Europe and love american muscle cars because of its strength and design – when you see them you just can`t feel indifferent, also all those tunings, redecorations, audio tunings of street race cars, pick up trucks… Thinking of how some people in nowadays still can`t afford to buy a used car it just hurts to see that! But in the end he bought them, he wrecked them, his money..his art. Today you can consider as art almost anything. Performance ?! Walking on 5th Av. s screaming and pissing the wall w.t.f??!!

Ryan
May 8, 2008 at 2:02 am

As a 1992 Camaro RS owner, seeing stuff like that hurts a little bit inside., that type of stuff just pisses me off, why couldn’t they use some rice burners or something like that!

Tony
May 4, 2008 at 9:33 pm

what I dont get is why dont he just get a film of an acual car crash and slow it down. That would be 100 percent accurate unlike him slowly pushing two cars together. And why the hell would he use two good cars? get some beaters and do this not two cars that probley ran good and could acually be used by someone.

Katie
May 4, 2008 at 6:24 pm

Okay…so it’s a waste of a couple of cars. I will agree with that. But first of all I have an Art degree and make plenty of money so that pisses me off. I personally don’t care for this kind of art because…well I don’t think it is art, but don’t call the man stupid. They are his cars, let him do what he wants…I don’t see people writing articles on 17 year olds who put huge aluminum spoilers on 5.0s or Broncos (Yes I have seen one) I think these common muscle cars could have suffered a worse fate.

Matt
May 4, 2008 at 5:48 pm

this is ignorance at its greatest. Why would anyone want to tear up 2 good cars? expecially if they are muscle cars. Third gen camaros should never be mistreated… let alone monte carlos… Even if he to 2 ricers like a civic and an eclipse… id still find it stupid. They are perfectly good cars. So why should he tear up nice cars that other people could actually make to amount to somthing. This is just stupidity at its best.

Niko
May 4, 2008 at 2:01 pm

Who cares? Really… they are just cars. But well done to the author of the piece, I’m sure that Jonathan Schipper crys himself to sleep at night because you said he was stupid ON THE INTERNET. Terrible article.

that’s exactly what i was trying to say Don……different ppl understand things differently….art is just one persons form of expressing something without outright saying it…..you have to reflect on it to figure out what it might mean, even though you don’t know exactly what it means…..i was just writing a couple things it could mean…..when Van Gogh made his art no-one liked it….they all said it wasn’t art….when all art really is, is just one mans way of expressing his thoughts or ideas….

Thers hundreds of old cars that get restored to perfection, and your whining about this guy that thought he could do something different!, unique maybe.. (dam right wing conformist).. May 3, 2008 at 7:43 am

Why this is a stupid waste of of muscle cars:

This is yet another form of the crusher.
cars don’t do that when they are head on speedin and hit another vechicle.
This guy a complete and total idiot.
Art is really no longer art these days if you look at 90% of the crap produced it is in no way shape or form art if you want to see art go to a tattoo shop.

Don
May 3, 2008 at 5:46 am

Ok sure. Call it Art if you need to or don’t. What it comes down to, even in fancy art houses is what do you take away from it? Are you too literal? Are you not literal enough? Was this a slam against the stringent American government? Was this a lesson for street racers. (Forget the title, it is irrelevent for this excersize) Was this a form of entertainment for Lookyloo rubberneckers? Thats where I went. A slow motion dead on collision. This way, Rubber neckers arn’t on the freeway consumed by thier own morbid fantasy with car wrecks.
(What Happend? Who hit who? Is any one injured? Better, is any one Dead? Do I get to see a Dead person?)

Well Ok, so maybe there asn’t gore involved here but again, that is irrelevent. What do you take from this? It not ‘getting it’. Its taking it…Get it?

Mike
May 3, 2008 at 3:32 am

I get it….the art is actually a statement against federal regulations and guidelines, along with the butt-reaming we get from the rising price of gas……the piece is actually called….’The Slow and Inevitable Death of American Muscle’…….and musclecars are dissappearing for a few reasons….because of the government putting limits on the power and emissions of streetable muscle cars fewer ppl are getting them….the manufacturers are even starting to fade them out and build more ‘efficient’ cars….the rising gas prices are also driving ppl to get smaller more fuel-efficient cars….some ppl would just assume “suping up” the little foreign cars and saving on gas…..there are many things that are making the musclecars fade out….

Would I have done it?…hell no, I would’ve kept them both in a nice garage a maybe customized them a bit…..even though it is a messed up way of going about it….he IS making a pretty loud statement….if you read the title of it you might have understood it a little better….

May 2, 2008 at 1:21 pm

His cars, his right to decide what to do with em thats all it comes down to.

To him its art, to you it is stupid. And really to allot of other people they just dont give a damn, its just something huge and diffrent to look at.

There are people out there that would say allot of you guys are stupid for putting so much money into your car. But hey its your money right? And your doing what makes you happy. So pretty much just tone down the name calling cuz really its all about point of view. And yeah you may not agree with his, but that doesnt make him wrong or a “fucking asshole”.

Tony87
May 2, 2008 at 3:58 am

At least in hollywood there’s some sense in their car killing. Say if they wanted to have a scene where an old hemi cuda convertible explodes (Nash Bridges). They’re not going to use a real hemi cuda, they’re not even going to use a 318 car; they’ll just take a body, put it on a crap chassis with wheels and blow it up. They don’t even do it for car enthusiasts, they do cause it’s cheaper (duh). But this…
These two unfortunate cars look like somebody literally drove them onto the platform.
I would’ve of taken both of them…

The firebird one was horrible. Why would a person call smashing two 2nd gen chickens together art? Oh well, at least it ain’t my car.

The spindle is a different story, at least those cars were old doo-doo machines.

Dan
May 1, 2008 at 9:09 pm

Stewart-
Nobody’s advocating censorship (at least, I hope not). Instead, we’re all saying this was a stupid idea. The whole point of the First Amendment and freedom of speech is to allow people to debate ideas in the public, and if an idea sucks, then we should have the right to say so. Freedom of speech embraces the concept that people do not agree and will never unite 100 percent behind any concept.

However, without any sort of further explanation from the artist, nobody should take the above paragraph as some sort of interpretation of the artist’s work. Which gets back to the reason I find the work pointless.

And to distinguish what Schipper did from the example you cited, any destruction of a car in the movies at least has the explanation of entertainment (whether or not it actually entertains), whereas what Schipper did (at least so far) defies explanation. If he smashed two stuffed bunny rabbits into each other, or two Dell computers into each other, I’d have the same beef (though I wouldn’t be writing about it on CarDomain).

Stewart
May 1, 2008 at 8:13 pm

Are movies art?
.
I think so…
.
I didn’t have an aneurysm when the Roadmaster got destroyed
in Jack Nicholson’s “The Departed”…
.
I didn’t like it either, but I didn’t go around stating
that Jack Nicholson and everyone involved in that movie
was responsible for the destruction of that Roadmaster,
and therefore they are all a**holes…
.
.
Yes, those were cool cars that were destroyed in that exhibit…
.
Is it the end of the world?
.
No.
.
.
The only reason I’m defending this is that if people can
sensor one type of art, then we, as car enthusiasts could be a target…
.
Censorship is a scary thing…

Tony87
May 1, 2008 at 7:17 pm

Oh can it you “professional artist”. You sir, are annoying (it’s really bad when you actually call yourself “professional artist”). Look at whats happening. Whoever this guy is, he’s taking 2 wonderful cars (that don’t even look like they’re in bad shape) and destroying them. Those cars could of had a better life. Somebody could of owned them and took care of them, and 20 years from now (if he or she kept it) would have a wonderful classic example of late 80’s iron. I mean, this guy couldn’t at least find junkier versions.

I guess anything can be called art these days…

Point taken. I would argue, however, that making money at art involves quite a bit more talent than education, and those who would argue otherwise tend to be the same people who “create” art like this.

Not my style, but to each their own. Stewart said it best..

Stewart
May 1, 2008 at 3:31 pm

How do you define art?
.
Something that is art to one person,
may not be appreciated as art to the next person…
.
I think of our cars as art…
.
When I’m working on mine, and doing different modifications to it,
I’m always trying to get it to look like the picture I have
in my minds eye…
.
Most people don’t get it.
.
All they see is an old Buick…
.
.
Every now and then though,
I find someone who appreciates what I have done
with my RM, and that is really really cool.
.
.
I feel the hate too.
.
A lot of people at car shows DON’T like it.
.
I’ve had some ask me why I even bothered to show up…
.
.
So, I kind of know how it feels when you put your soul
into something, and the people who can’t see the hard work
and dedication that you have put into it, just respond with
nasty comments…
.
.
I just ignore them.
.
And sometimes, I’m lucky enough to go and pick
up my trophy right in front of them :)
.

“I earned a degree from college in something I can actually make money at, not in art, “

That’s a pretty ignorant statement. So I guess that means that all of those VFX and post production artists in Hollywood pulling down six figures a year don’t count for anything? Or maybe the Video Game industry which pulls in more then 13 Billion dollars a year? So all those artist? 3D Modelers, Animators, etc… Who went to art school… They don’t count either right? Oh wait… let’s not forget all of those graphic designers who work for high profile ad agencies designing commercials for Nike or Toyota… nope.

You sir… are a total idiot.
