Dodge Challenger Wrecks Hard At Road America

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor

Coming into turn 1 at the end of Road America’s long straightaway, the Vanishing Point Challenger got loose, went into the infield grass, and then hit the tire-pile on the outside wall hard enough to fly up right on top of it. Driver Erich Heuschele was unhurt, but the damage, as you can see, was pretty catastrophic. The team says the Challenger is out of the race, which is terrible news. But astonishingly, we saw the car shortly after our own run leaving the track under its own power—and passing us! There was some speedy-dry in the car’s panels when I photographed it on the wrecker, but it didn’t seem to be dumping fluids. Maybe they’ll be able to patch it up and run it without the front clip, NASCAR-style. What do you think: is this it for the Challenger, or will we see it again down the road? Take a good look at the carnage after the jump and decide for yourself.

Dodge Challenger, wrecked

I feel the need to point out that the last thing you want in a big crash is for the car to be ok! You want the body of the car to take most of the forces… Not you inside! Watch the video on youtube of them driving a smart into a concrete wall at 70 mph, the car is relatively intact considering (it has a crazy roll cage) but the people inside would have died due to the forces they took rather than the car taking it for them. As for the new v8’s and gas issues, most of them now have the engine manager that will shut of 4 cylinders and they actually get close to the same milage as something the size of a corolla with a 2.0 liter 4 cylinder in it, remember 4 bangers rev alot higher to keep going so if a v8 can shut those useless cylinders off it can save the extra, not to mention it works less hard moving the weight of the car due to the torque it makes.
The problem with saying if you want this car you don’t want gas milage is that Chrysler is in trouble right now because the Hemi is aimed towards the blue collar worker market. The guy with loads of money probably won’t buy a new camaro, or challenger. They would either fix up the orginal cars and make them as nice if not better than the new ones or buy something BETTER. So gas milage is an issue and if chrysler doesn’t pick it up soon they will be in the situation they were in quite a few years ago.

oh yeah, that car looks very fixable. but new cars today have alot more that could go wrong. race cars have very strong chassis.

If you choose to build, buy, or drive any Muscle Car or Street Machine then MPG is the last thing you really care about! If you care so much about MPG then go read and contribute to the Hybrid or boxed High MPG vehicle Blogs. I believe the U.S. Market is primed once again for our auto manufacturers to produce some real cars that deliver real HP to the REAR WHEELS! I will buy the gas at the pump and leave the rubber on the road! That will save the government some seal coat charges on the asphalt.

im a GM guy absolutly, i mean i drive an 05 GTO and have said “mopar no car” for a long time but i think dodge did a way better job with the challenger than chevy did with the camaro, when you see them both in person it really makes your mind up for you

the 2010 camaro looks better :)

Performance cars having bad mpgs is hysteria left over from the 60s. EFI, plus aerodynamics, plus overdrive transmissions equals pretty decent mpg. My Mach 1 gets 30mpg on the highway. No, its not as good as a hybrid, but run the annual gas expense at 10K a year vs. a 38 mpg hybrid and realize that I get to drive a real car for a hundred bucks more a year. Save your skirt bunching for the SUV crowd, hippy.

The Challenger is an insane Muscle Car masterpiece, no doubt!

But just like it’s first genation grand daddy, the gas crisis killed, once again it’s the wrong time for a gas hogging V8 to take to the streets

what the hell are we gonna do with a Hemi when gas hits $5.00 a gallon which is now predicted to happen by labor day?

Hybrid anyone?

Dude why do people like you always have to resort to attacks..geez, the car hit big tires under speed..grow up or are you one of these chevy people

Quite a few people said they want one.. nobody’s curious as to why it went off the track? Nobody has raised a single performance question yet are all happy about how “good” it took the damage. It hit a pile of tires, they took all the impact. You guys are idiots.

Well indeed the Challenger is a great and strong car, but then again, it collided against a rubber wall and thats why there wasn’t too much damage, alot of the force was absorbed by the tires (what the wall was made of). The question is, what would’ve happened if the wall was made of concrete?

If a challenger can take a beating like that and still drive away I might be trading in my mitsu in for one. It still looks good even after all that.

bugajskis right.. American muscle is built to drive, last, and can take a beating like no other… i was rear ended by a toyota supra in my 68 lincoln continental and his car was totally crushed and undriveable with fluid leaking out.. my car needed a new bumper and trunklid.. he said it himself the car folded like a beercan.. it was at at least 25 mph..american muscle.. rear wheel V8’s.. u gotta love the styling and classic performance of the new challenger… what a machine.. 425hp and an available 6-speed from the factory.. the R/T’s running 370hp wqith the same tranny combos..endless options.. youll see 800 hp blown street machines by mid july ruling the streets and underground racing schene..

I like all the haters talking crap about this car, its a dodge blah blah fuckin blah.. i guarantee u if it was a suburu or some other type of jap crap involved in a collison like that challanger was in, it be an acordian. that challanger went back on the road after its front clip came off. If it’s a racecar, get the baseball bat and some duct tape then throw a set of tires on it and go racing. It is a shame though.

There is no doubt that racing improves the breed. Sometimes the lessons are brutal. This should be a tough car and it looks totally reparable to me.The “post-wreck” car should have gotten 100 times the attention of a clean one. The stance still looks great, even without half of the front end stuff.

I hope they leave it the way it is and drive it like they stole it. That would be way more Vanishing Point than getting it fixed.

There’s no worries about the insurance man seeing this, I’m pretty sure Erich and the SRT boys wouldn’t let some random collision shop work on it anyway. :-)

If I know Erich, the car will be at MAM this morning, but unfortunately it’s probably not his decision. Corporate lawyers and marketing dweebs will make that decision for him.

Regardless, we’ll see the car again, probably Targa Newfoundland, and it will be ‘better than new’.

Drive safe and run silent Erich.

If it comes back, it would be its third life. Don’t forget that car was headed for the crusher when it was salvaged for this event… (I think it will come back…)

I prefer to see one wrecked and abused on a track more than I do one sitting in some parking lot with a sticker in the window that says DON’T TOUCH. He better hope his insurance company dosen’t see these photos or at least read the stories.

Man O’ Man ,
that’s some Hard Racing there .
Glad that the driver, Erich is OK , As far as
the Challenger , It’s like my TIMEX , it takes
a Licking and keeps on Ticking , It cool to see
it make it down the road under it’s own steam .
I think that Challener will be Restored too
Former Glory and Raced Again.

It’ll straighten out and be okay for new panels and a nose. I doubt it’ll race though, without that but crazier things have happened. I can’t be definite either way.

DID ANYONE GET VIDEO of the crash?

Aw man, this is horrible. It would be pretty cool if they ran it without the front clip.

Hopefully it ends up in a museum somewhere, if not getting repaired.
