Nissan Silvia or Subaru RWD Coupe: Which Would You Choose?

By Rob

Editor-in-Chief

Yes, both cars are about two years out, and details on each are still a bit sketchy. But we know a lack of information has never stopped you guys from having an opinion! Nissan is claiming they will have their car in the showroom first, and of course, they already have a strong following from the 240. But don’t count out Subaru, who is developing their car jointly with Toyota. So, which cool, affordable RWD coupe would you choose: the Silvia or the Subie?

I would take eaither depending on what you were buying for. If I wanted a drifter I would get the 240, but subies are notorious for rally racing. But I would have to choose subie if they can get their act together, this lattest sti blew big donkey nuts, they extinguished the engine noise (which pissed me off because the best part of the sti to me was the noise it made) and gave it a euro look…I don’t live in euro, I want a bad ass look, a car that youll sodimize yourself just by looking at it. Rumors are the 300hp sti engine, with awd, will be the full blown version of the toyota subie concept, with the rwd as the base model.

While I own and regularly flog two different RWD Nissans… an SR powered S13 coupe and a stockish S14 240SX… I think my answer, based on specs available, would be “Hyundai Genesis Coupe”. Between the Subarota and the new Silvia though, it’s obvious… Silvia all the way.

If Subaru and Toyota have their way, their car will be a hideous 4-door. Nissan still kinda knows how to be cool. Right now my vote goes to the Silvia, but we’ll see what happens.

And by the way, the Suba-yota is gonna have a boxer engine:

While both companies (Toyota & Nissan) have and do still make RWD cars. I would have to say that Nissan has a better Idea of how to do it. I say this because I have owned an A86 and a 240SX and the one to give me greater joy is the Nissan. So I pick the Silvia

I’d buy the Sub-Toy EXCEPT if the car had a Subaru engine. Older Subaru flat-fours sound like old Volkswagen Beetles (horrible clatter) and a good-looking coupe would be ruined by such a clackety ruckus. But if the Sub-Toy ends up with a Toyota engine, then it’ll be the better buy . . . especially if it has Subaru’s all-wheel drive. Right now, I’m looking at the new Honda coupe. But if the Sub-Toy hits the market later this year, I’m willing to wait. It might be worth it.

Subaru! I wished Toyota was out of the picture but it’s a global platform. The Subaru is going to be a very light weight car from what I have read.

some people on here have no idea what they are even talking about.
paul says that nissan has poor engines? do you even know how many awards the vq has gotten? and totaleclipse pretty everything youve said is retarded, first off it’s going to be a joint venture with toyota who has made many successfull rearwheel drive platforms. they’ll most likely be handling the rear wheel drive. and dont forget lexus is toyota, lexus has some pretty serious rwd cars. second, By no means did nissan mess up witht the 350z they have won over 40 international awards and have drastically outsold the z4, tt, slk and rx-8. and although the 350z is a bit chunky, it’s by no means a poor handling car it outhandles and is faster than a 45grand boxster. Oh and the new altima is 100million times better looking than the previous generation, G I think your being bias.

sorry I had to get that off my chest, people read these peoples comments and thats how car rumors get started!

ok, out of the concept photoshops I would choose the SUBARU. even though the actual cars will look nothing like these.

subaru…i think you would see less of them on the road compared to the nissan, and i’d rather be different.

I like the nissan. It looks sweeter

I love all the hate, gonna have to test drive them both but the H4 of subaru has alot of potential for superior handling.

Silvia because I can’t imagine a good RWD from Subaru…but i really want a mitsu :)

J Wood
May 8, 2008 at 2:11 am

I would have to go with the Subyota based on looks. Also the Subaru will probably weigh less (hopefully) and you cant beat the horizontally opposed motor (Lets just hope they slap a turbo on it)

G
May 8, 2008 at 2:08 am

I agree that the silvia rear looks like the new altima sedans. I have an 05 altima but i just think the new ones are ugly…especially the front end, ick. However, subaru has never really made a car that was really attractive… yes it may perform well, but just never on the sexy side.

So i guess i really cant make a decision. lets see what theyll stuff under the hood!

Bobby
May 8, 2008 at 1:46 am

subie all the way. The Silvia lookstoo much like the Altima coupe.

Metal
May 8, 2008 at 1:45 am

The Subie looks just like an RSX, and most likely they’ll have the stupid new grille just like they slapped on the new STi and WRX. I’m surprised the Subaru doesn’t have a hood scoop, but it does come in blue and have gold rims! Hmm…nothing new.

TotalEclipse316
May 8, 2008 at 1:35 am

Ha ha ha, RWD subaru, that’s going to be a joke. Subaru has never been an ingenuitive auto maker, why are they trying to start now. Stick to what you know, Nissan is. And Toyota, please the last “sports” car toyota had was arguably the supra, or maby the MR2 Spyder and that was a short flop. Why toyotas last so long, two words: family cars. So yeah, if you ask me I take the Silvia, I just hope Nissan doesn’t try anything funny like with the 350Z (it’s a sloppy handling car). But I’ll wait to see the Mitsu RA first.

Pressed_Ham
May 7, 2008 at 11:07 pm

The Subie, of course,

It’s going to be cheaper, and just about as good

If the nissan’s going to be a 9 out of ten, the subie’s going to be an 8.5

paul
May 7, 2008 at 11:00 pm

id go with the nissan because the subie is “devoloping’there car with toyota and toyota’s designs suck but there engines are good.

nissan on the other hand has sick designs but sometimes poor engines

I dont know abut you guys, but the body styling on each of them looks really similar.

May 7, 2008 at 10:45 pm

I hope that nissan will actually release real spy photos of the Silvia instead of this photoshopped Altima coupe. And if they keep the car light weight and easy to kick the rear out, then it’s the winner.

Subaru/Toyota. Subaru may not have much experience in the rear wheel drive coupe field, but Toyota sure as hell does.

Eric
May 7, 2008 at 9:10 pm

The nissan ofcourse, why would i buy a rear wheel drive subaru! besides I already know NISSAN can build a good rear wheel drive coupe. I havent really seen this from SUBURA so yeah!
