Challenger vs. Bullitt

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

Edmunds just the put the new Challenger up against the Mustang Bullitt. The Bullitt comes with a manual tranny, weighs 600 pounds less and is $5,400 cheaper. But the Challenger smoked it in the quarter, edged it out in the slalom, has a higher quality interior and a usable back seat. Hmmm….

I bet you those numbers would be better for the Bullitt if the test driver could actually launch a manual tranny. Think I’m making excuses?…just go back and watch those launches in the video again…..endless wheel spin every time.

I really dont understand why are you comparing the Bullit with the Challenger… The cars from the Steve McQueen movie were a 1968 Mustang GT and a Dodge CHARGER not a Challenger.
The 2008 Bullit would smoke the CHARGER easily…

Well, Im a Ford guy plain and simple. Now that’s out of the way. With over 100 more horspower out of a 6.1 HEMI and only weighing 600 pounds more, is that a victory for the Challenger? im thinking that HEMI should be putting out much more at 6.1 Litres… seriously. in the Slolam well nothing to talk about there, except would better tires have aided the mustang??? maybe, and not only in the slolam but in the drag race too.

thats all i have to say, im not dog-ing down on anyone or hyping up anything, just stating facts.

Wow! a Mustang! What a rare vehicle, that I rarely see on the road… Not like I ever see one ever block or so….

Psssht! AND int he CD test at least the Challenger had optional Eagle F1 rubber. while the bullit had mud + snow tires. C’mon, now!!

I wouldn’t get too much into this comparison -Rob’s a Mopar man, and can’t have the Shelby kicking Challenger butt immediately .. .

I agree with Victor and Dan che hemi challenger is a piece o shit and the GT500 willl smoke that piece back to the stone age where it belongs.

Both cars are muscle cars that do justice to being retro. Both are real lookers! But, I believe Derrick said it best, “MOPAR OR NO CAR!!!” Stick or auto, I’d take a Challenger either way, any day!

So retarded. It’s a mustang bullit, not a gt500. A gt500 would destroy an srt8 charger.

Not all Mustangs have the solid live rear axle. The last gen Cobra had IRS. I love the nostalgia and ’60s feel of a solid rear axle, but I wonder why they didn’t keep IRS as an option. I’m a big fan of both brands here and domestics in general, but when it comes down to it, one question remains: Would I rather be McQueen or Kowalski? Tough pick to say the least, but even though I’d like to have both cars, I think I’d be McQueen first. The Bullitt is lighter after all and there’s alot of improvement that could be done to the 4.6 to help it catch the Hemi. Ford didn’t exactly milk it for all it’s got. True it does take a modified car to keep up with a stock Hemi, but I could have the Ford payed off quicker and I wouldn’t want to wait the extra year for Mopar to offer a stick.

Yea, a mustang even a bullit is a budget car. Of course if you compare the Challenger to a gt500 the gt500 weighs just a much and still has a cheap interior(But gobs of HP). Also both the mustang buttit and GT and GT500 still suffer from a huge flaw! the solid live rear axle. I believe there is rousch version you can get that fixes this. Solid axle is fine in the straight line, but is does have screwy handling in the turns, just like my 71 oldsmobile, so much for progress ford! Still using a solid axle just like my old oldsmobile. Will be fun when the new camaro comes out, and the 6 speed manual on the challenger will be great. Having all these modern muscle cars to buy is only a good thing! If I could afford it I would have all 3 in my driveway, I may have to settle on 2 :)

Hmm, I think it’s hard to compare the cars because they had an SRT-8 Challenger and not a Shelby GT500 but a normal Mustang. Ok, the interior of the Chally is nicer but I don’t think a quite normal Mustang is comparable to the SRT-8 in its driving abilites…
