$7,300 for a Geo Metro???

By Rob Einaudi

Editor-in-Chief

I mentioned the rising prices for used Geo Metros in New on the Net last week. There’s a longer article on this trend today on CNN. I’m seriously having trouble believing someone paid $7,300 for a Metro. Seems like most of the Geo Metros on CarDomain were scored for a few hundred bucks. But then I just went to eBay and it looks like quite a few have been bid up to $3,000 or more. So are all the pizza delivery guys gonna cash in? How much would you pay for a 3 Cyla Killa?

I just picked up a 1997 Suzuki Swift GA with 138,000kms for 1800 bucks cert. I get around 50 miles to the gallon when I drive it hard! I average 12 days on a full tank of 40 litres and get anywhere from 450 to 550km in the city. I’ve saved almost 30 bucks a week since I bought it compared to my sunfire Gt that Im driving in the summer which is also gas economical. It has lots of pep and the body is solid as a rock, no rust at all. I just oil sprayed it and it has no sign of the notorious cradle rot problem on the frame. These cars are laughed at but they are very reliable, peppy and very very cheap to maintain and service as long as regular maintennance is done. The laugh is on everyone else sitting in the garage and at the gas station pumping away twice a week with a very lite wallet!

I’ve heard those Geos are kinda efficient cars. But if I were to be made to pay seventy three hundred bucks for a Geo, I’d rather buy seventy three hundred bucks worth of M&M’s…lol

Laugh all you will. I will say that $7000 is a bit much for a Geo, but I don’t see it being too long before Chevy brings the Spirit to the US to be the next “3 Cyla Killa” as noted above.
The Geo has a lot of things going for it, primarily being it’s spectacular MPG rating. Moreover, it is a very reliable car. They rarely broke down, and their price made them a really great buy when they were new.
It doesn’t surprise me that people are picking up on the Geo. They were laughed at for so long, now people are starting to see, those original buyers really weren’t all that dumb.
Face it, with the price og gas at an all time high, and expected to rise, the days of the big V8 sports cars and SUVs are quickly coming to an end. I drive an Aveo, and thankfully, I am not having to decide whether to buy gas or food. Economy car prices are going to rise, because they are coming more and more in demand. Welcome to the 21st Century. All Hail the Geo!

oh, i did not see that “Rob Einaudi editor-in-chief” was the over enthusiastic writer who jumped the gun and wrote a faulse story without taking the time to see what qwas actually happening… some jouralist ruin careers with mistakes like that.

be glad we are a more forgiving community.

you know what

thats a scam add

$7300 is some kind of magic number… like maybe the law gets more severe when you steal over 7300

how many times have you seen a $60,000 muscle car for sale for 7300?

i see old 32 ford coupes with the same$7300 on it

saleen mustangs $7300

custom hot rods $7300

i cannot believe someone involved in “car domain” was not already aware of that BS with ebay motors.

whoever wrote this article should be VERY EMBARRASSED!!!

Supply and Demand, people. If you remember anything from economics, it’s all about supply and demand. Folks are willing to pay more as supply becomes limited. When the price becomes too high, demand drops thus adjusting the market.

Only because gas prices are going up. I had a Geo prism & it lasted from 95 to 05, it was actually was a good car. I don’t know about now, but when it putted into the dealership as a trade in it might not have looked hot, but it still ran well.

I just can’t see that car going for $7300. The buyer must be nuts! Then again it is a peanut M&M themed car!!

Honestly it doesn’t surprise me. I have been waiting for the price of small cars to go up. About six months ago I was able to score a neon and I’m happy as hell that I have it and I was very happy to get anything out of my blazer when I sold it this spring. I think when people realize gas prices will only go up people will start doing silly things, like pay more for little junkers then they were “worth” new. Im really just happy I was able to get into an fuel efficient car before the huge rush. It might be funny if we see Focus and Neons and Civics sell more than 50K SUV’s in the used car market.

I wouldn’t pay more than a few hundred bucks, thanks.
My MR2 and my Golf get decent fuel mileage, and definitely don’t cost $7,300 in fuel to run.

Nice M&M’s car. Must be what Kyle Busch drives on his day off.

Face it. Prices of small nerdy fuel efficient cars are on the rise. It’s a trend I expect to continue until either price of gas drops (which I doubt) or Americans become used to paying $4.00 a gallon (then oil companies can raise it a little more). Check out this USA Today article that was reposted as part of a thread on fordfestiva.com.

I just purchased a Festy about a month ago. Paid $1200 for a car that needs a new engine, which I have, thankfully. I’ve been seeing guys paying more than what I did for cars that need more work than mine. It’s crazy, but if you look back to the ’70s, history makes sense. The Pinto, Mustang II, and Vega would’ve never been popular had it not been for the oil crisis.

Ubermorons rove Ebay in search of cars they become determined to buy, oblivious to the fact that 99 times out of 100 they could have gotten a better deal by getting off their uberkeesters and done a little brainwork and legwork.
-
Then there are the ubercheepos. They think they have a shot at that Corvette with an offer that’s $6,000 below reserve or that $1 bid will snag a Katana.
-
Likewise, there’s also a bunch of uberdreamers who put the reserve 20% above any fair market value.
-
What is left is a very, very rare opportunity to get a good deal on a car, especially in the $5,000 and under price range.
-
Ebay is a joke. Deals like this Metro are the punchline.
