Chevy Aveo vs. Kia Rio: Which Would You Choose?
By Rob
Editor-in-Chief
This week’s shitbox Showroom Showdown is all about being practical and economical. These were the two cheapest four door vehicles I could find on Edmunds–both cars list for less than $11k. I was expecting better gas mileage, but I guess mid to low 30s on the highway isn’t too horrible. And because this edition is all (or mostly) about price, let’s say that if you go with the Chevy, you get to sink the $650 you save into your project car. So, which would you choose, the Korean Chevy or Duran Duran edition Kia?

I will say that Kia’s are good cheap transportation but I like the Aveo’s looks they are way cool to look at. A fresh choice from the ugly Hondas and Toyota’s!

Just for your information, the 19 year old Festiva of retroman was manufactured by Kia. The Chevy aveo is a Daewoo whith a chevy sign on it. So both cars are Korean, and I prefer the Kia rio.

In case you did not know kia is owned by hyundai, they share common drivetrains between hyundai and kia, so i guess your hyandai preference is purely sheet metal…

i chose the rio because i have one and everyone that drives it wants one and some people say that i have a better car then them. so the rio

Well, since it was not specified whether you were talking about the sedan or the 5 door, (they’re just one picture people) I would go with the Aveo. I would actually go with the Aveo either way. The hatch may not be the best looking thing out there, but at least I won’t have to worry about taking it to the shop every 2 weeks using that 10 year warranty.

I love my 04 Aveo sedan. Its been nothing but good to me. On this level of economically manufactured cars, not on the same level with your Roll-Royces, or Porsches, its good car for the money, and gets great gas mileage. In this day and age with gas aproaching $5/gallon plus, its a welcome break at the pump. I havent been near my 02 Suburban in months. You get what you pay for!!

Kia’s are only economical for the first year then they start going up the poop shoot, what started out as a nice cheap car that looked like a bang for your buck ended up being just a bang and costs you bucks, the stupidest crap starts breaking!! so i guess the terribly appealing Aveo it is

I know this blog is about being practical and economical.
On the economy side, it’s a coin toss. But for me, practically, neither! I don’t feel safe in them. My family and I feel safe in our Chargers. Economy wise, our 07 HEMI, goes about 200 mi with city driving, 400 mi + with freeway driving. My 70 with 318 got 20 MPG freeway. In my book, that’s pretty fair economy for V8’s.

Aveo hands down. I drove both the kia and the aveo… I can actually say the aveo is faster, more comfortable. Plus the 2009 hatch’s will kick serious butt…just wait.

With the cars that my family and friends have and had I can see that American cars have some of the worst gas mileage and get problems real fast.

Derrick I prefer my truck and $75 isnt even full off of 1/4, by the way my truck is cheaper than half your car, it books at about $5000 after my new paint it’ll be about a $6000 peice of STEEL art, I remember making plastic cars too WITH FUCKING LEGOS. I’m kind of sorry if I offended anyone in eith post but I LOVE big motors, low gas milage, and expensive to fill vehichels(I don’t have to pay on dates), I’m an Iowa kid my family has 4 vehicles a V8 Caddy, a Suburban, my truck and a boat with 4 pistons to little.

What the hell that like asking if you want to eat a spoon full of fresh dog shit or fresh pig shit, one’s seems better in the begining but both suck BAD in the end. Neither, I peraonally wouldn’t mind getting to park in the back of that pick up that is always parked in the front row at work or school. Accually I’ll take them tboth and weld them together and have a “nice” shaggin’ waggin’ one person wide and 4 people long. I really wonder what kind of drugs people are on when they come up with shit like those, yes they probably run better than my truck and I can garenty they get about 3 or 4 times better gas millage but I love my truck and its not a clown car.
Remeber their is no replacement for displacement.

If it were a toss-up between the Aveo Sedan and the Rio, I’d choose the Aveo (why the hell did you ever try to match up the Aveo hatch with Kia’s sedan in the first place???!!!). Seen the Aveo sedan and nice lines I would say. But in this case, I’d go for the Rio. The Aveo hatchback sucks. Looks like a giant baby bootie.

Allow me to extend the name Kia for everyone -Killed In Action- I’ve owned 2 Kias so far ones a 95 and ones a 96, BOTH have fried motors.
If it ain’t a GM product, It ain’t worth it! Aveo all the way!

Ok, so most of you are missing the point. This is not about what kind of car do you have that you like better than one of these two, it’s asking which of these two would you prefer. I know they’re both low power, and made from cheap materials, and both built overseas, but you’re looking at two of the cheapest priced cars on the market. So all of you that have to say “my Mustang GT is faster,” you’re completely missing the point. The point is cheap price and fuel economy. Now, to the point.
I can’t speak about the Kia, because I’ve never owned one. I do have a 2006 Aveo 5door. The fuel mileage listed here is in my opinion inaccurate because I average 39mpg highway in mine. Sometimes less depending on how I drive. I even get around 30mpg in town. I even tested a different driving technique, and got an outstanding 47mpg out of a couple tanks. I’ve had no mechanical problems yet either, but it’s still just a couple years old. Yes, you can outrun me in your Mustang GTs, but you paid three times as much for your car as I did, and don’t get half the mileage. Make fun of the small cars all you want because I’ll be the one driving by and smiling while you get your $80 tank of gas each week.
By the way, even at current prices I can fill up on $25, and drive on that gas for 350 miles. My truck can run 300 miles on a $75 tank of gas. Which one do you think I prefer?

May 22, 2008 at 8:28 pm
Both are actually pretty good cars. And as far as the gas mileage, it is a little misrepresenting. My Aveo gets anywhere between 35 and 38 miles per gallon, stock, depending on how I decide to drive.
Someone earlier said they are uncomfortable, apparently he/she has never driven one, because my aveo is quite comfortable.
It isn’t the fastest machine, but it will do a c-note, if I really need it to. Other than that, it is an economy car.
So all you haters, hate on, you aren’t stressing me.
The Aveo is quickly starting to top GM sales, both overseas and in the US. Mainly because of the price, and overall value of the car.
It might not be as popular as the Honda civic or the Nissan Sentra, or even the Cobalt in terms of style, but I submit this.
My Aveo LT cost me $15,000 out the door, with Automatic Transmission, ABS, Front and side impact airbags (5 star scrash rating), Aluminum rims, Power Windows, Power Locks, AC, Keyless Entry and alarm, Leather interior, AM/FM/CD/MP3/6 speaker sound system, and a spoiler for style.
Let me see you get a brand new Honda Civic or fit, Nissan Sentra or Versa, Ford Focus, Toyota Camry or Yaris, or even a Kia Rio loaded out with the same options for the price I paid.
Then tell me about how much better they are..

I have driven both the Aveo and the Rio. I’d go for the Aveo, because although they are basically the same, the Aveo is just an all around fun drive, the interior looks a lot nicer, and best of all, its a heck of a lot cheaper than the Rio is.

Hahahaha! Sorry but u down below there, you think an R/T charger could spank a Mustang GT??! A Dodge?? Hahahahahahahaha!
Anyways, back to the subject, one of my friends has a Kia Rio, it is an ‘04 with only 72k miles and it is breaking down already! There is no excuse for that! In my opinion the chevy is a better built vehicle. And if you want to discuss which vehicle is the better buy, we should also be considering which one lasts longer. All of my friends who have owned Kias have had problems with them before the vehicles were hardly 5 years old! Chevys last longer. The Chevy is the better buy. And believe me, I am NOT a Chevy person.

My 19 year old Festiva (not up on Cardomain yet) gets 50+mpg, and there’s still room for improvement, not to mention it’s already lived long enough to offset the pollution it took to manufacture it. The only other car I know that can match that is a Geo. All said, I’d rather drive a proven 19yr old car than by a brand new over rated Kia or Chevy. Come on, both of my Dodge Spirits can get 30mpg out on the highway, and one of them is an R/T with the potential to spank a Mustang GT. I just don’t think the new economy cars are all that economical.
Mike
May 22, 2008 at 5:30 pm
I agree with some comments on here. It is sad they don’t get better mpg. I’d probably take the Chevy b/c I am a chevy guy, but I’d rather take a Cobalt, preferably an SS Turbocharged 260hp. 30/22 mpg better than my 8mpg truck!
Ryan
May 22, 2008 at 5:10 pm
Yeah there both pretty bad, and the gas milage isnt to impressive, my sentra gets 36 mpg on the highway and its got more power and looks a million times better then those two. But id take the chevy over the kia. Kia is bad news

If I would have to pick one out of the two, it would have to be the kia. Reason being I prufur the import cars over the domestic vehicles. I might be American, but I want a vehicle that will last a long time & now-a-day they don’t make domestic cars like they use to.

The Chevy Aveo rated as the worst car ever produced a couple of times and the Kia wasn’t far behind, so even being affordable doesn’t count.
Given the opportunity the afford-ability factory you really missed the Toyota Yaris, or Vitz as they’re most known for.
The Vitz has aftermarket support from big companys like Veilside and some pretty impressive tuning names have made copies and it’s one of those cars people really wanted to see in America.
Other notables (one being said here) is the Mazda 3 and Hyundai Accent.

does it make much difference when your shopping for a can of soup? do you buy the no-name brand… or do you spend the extra 5 cents for the slightly better (but same tasting) brand name stuff. it all comes down to what does your secritary wife think’s is cuter.
not much competition here.
i’d choose a base model mazda3 for the same price
