This Just In: New on the Net

Talk about old-school. After he got tired of having high fuel prices eating into his profits, one Tennessee farmer has resorted to using mules instead of tractors to tend his fields. Third world, here we come! Here’s the news:

  • Citing that it needs to "deal with reality," Ford is cutting production its trucks and SUVs, which have sat on dealer lots as consumers seek out more fuel-efficient alternatives. Previous claims that the company will be profitable in 2009 have also been retracted. Expect plant closures and layoffs soon. MSNBC
  • With the economy as tight as it is, car dealers are trying everything to get people to buy, and that includes giving away semi-automatic handguns. Yup, you read that right. A dealer in Montana is offering customers the choice of $250 in gas or a weapon, and the gun is winning hands down. God bless America. KMBC-TV via Jalopnik
  • With gas prices rising every day, and global warming killing polar bears, is it time to drop the speed limit back to 55? Unsurprisingly, some people are saying yes. Personally, I think we should concentrate on making cars faster and more fuel-efficient. Wired
  • Tesla Motors wants to go public in 2008, but is it a good bet? From the sounds of this post, probably not. Blogging Stocks via The Truth About Cars

Free gas or a free gun, I think I’ll take the gun (just another dumb redneck after all), oh they’re in Missouri not Montana by the way.

Lower speed limit won’t do anything… people already drive wayyy above it (thoughts of SUVs going 90 down the highway pops into my mind) and will continue to do so even with a lower speed limit. Plus, is there really THAT big of a difference between mpg at 65 and mpg at 55? I highly doubt it’s big enough to warrant spending all the money to lower the limit.

Why are people getting scared about fuel prices! It wont help to make the speed limit 55, this is just a little sign that people are focusing on the wrong aspect of fuel economy! and if you believe in GLOBAL WARMING, then drive your car less, not slower!
