Vintage UTCC Contender: 1985 Buick Somerset With Storied Past

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor

This badass Buick Somerset, built by Tommy Riggins, has a racing past that reaches back into the 80’s. It was built for the IMSA’s Kelly American Challenge in 1985, and also ran in 24 Hours of LeMans and 12 Hours of Sebring in 1987. Its Chevy 358 makes 750 horsepower, and owner Shaun now races it in SCCA events at Laguna Seca. On his ride page, Shaun’s got some hilarious video of it leaving the rest of the vintage racers in the dust. Listen to that engine!

slight clarification, it raced in the 24hrs of Daytona, not Lemans :) I wish, it would make it a bit more valuable –

fun car to drive, a little bit of a handful if you get on the gas early though. Should be fun at Buttonwillow. I’ll be brining my other buick along as well : http://www.historictransamimsa.com/Members/olds2.html
