Latest From Rolls Royce
By Ron

Rolls Royce has released some teaser pictures of their new RR4 model that is due to be released in 2010. According to the official press release, it will be smaller than the Phantom and will be powered by a new and unique engine. What caught my attention is that Chief Designer Ian Cameron states that the RR4 will have more of an informal presence that the Phantom models, with a greater emphasis on drivability. It sounds like Rolls Royce may be targeting those customers who wouldn’t normallybuy a Roller because they see them as being too staid or formal. If the design stays relatively true to the concept pictures, then they could have a winner on their hands. I have to say that the concept does seem to have a bit of Chrysler influence. What do you think?

I’m thinking a cross between the Chrysler 300 and the Chevy Volt. I can see Rolls in it, but I don’t know who exactly that design appeals to. There’s nothing wrong with it and of course that’s just a drawing, but I’m not feeling it yet.

Given that the sketch is a generalized and exaggerated rendition of the actual shape of the car, there’s more than a hint at what Cameron might have meant by “…informal presence…”. Look closely at the front of the car. The ridgid, stand-up Rolls grille seems to be missing. The ‘Flying Lady’ hood ornament is indicated, but the traditional grille is not. Maybe the RR4 will be the first departure from the expected look of a Rolls Royce in many a year(!).
