Basketcase Rescue: Chrysler Cordoba Racecar!

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor

Dwaine got a junk ’76 Cordoba for free, then let it sit for a period of several years. But when the time came to transform this promising project, he worked fast, gutting the interior and fixing the rust, installing a cage and a built 400 big block. He’s building it for open-road racing, and although he didn’t get the engine installed in time for this year’s Pony Express 130, he towed it down to Nevada anyway for tech inspection. The car won People’s Choice and passed tech, and later this month it’s going to be doing its first Bonneville 100, a hundred-mile race through the desert on closed highways. Stay tuned!

Just the looks of this car reminds me of back when NASCAR racers were based on cars you could actually buy at your local dealership. I miss those days before NASCAR got so ‘technical’ that only one car body is acceptable on the circuit, and the only way to differentiate one car from another is by the painted-on grille. NASCAR is heading a direction that I no longer want to follow, and I rarely watch their races anymore. I’d rather go out to the drags. At least those cars ARE recognizable as ones I can relate to.

I was NEVER a fan of the Cordoba, and its “rich, Corinthian leather” (a.k.a. textured vinyl) BUT this is the first that I really like. Very nice job and its good to see something that sat for so long was finally given a chance and was brought back so robustly.
