Exclusive: Pics From The Set Of Death Race

By Jen Dunnaway

Deathrace is going to be one of the seriously hot action films of the summer, and one that gearheads are going to want to check out. It’s a remake of the darkly hilarious 1975 cult favorite Deathrace 2000, which featured godawfully armor-plated beaters in an epic race across the desert, the object being to cause as much gory pedestrian mayhem en route to the finish line as possible. The revised version looks to be a little more civilized, with cars battling it out on closed racetrack within an industrial-futuristic prison complex. The stakes are still high (the prize the condemned inmates are battling for is their freedom) and there’s plenty of heavy artillery to spice up the race sequences—the cars are both armoured and armed to the teeth, and in the sequence I saw being filmed during my visit to the set in Montreal, contestants were blasting each other’s cars with hood-mounted machine guns. The film won’t hit theaters until August 22, but in the meantime, check out all the just-released pics from the set below the jump!

One of the cars is an 05+ Chrysler 300 which is also kind of obvious and I’m pretty sure that’s the original emblem and most of the front end showing. Look at pics 5, 6, and 7 and you can see what I mean.

These cars look like vanilla everyday nascars with a few shoe boxes glued on ‘em ‘n sprayed black. What happened to the awesome fins, blades and teeth of the originals?

Have a horrible feeling it’s gonna be more like politically correct Cannonball Run remake – without the jokes.

Please post a nice bladed motor carving up an old lady to put my mind at ease!

There’s a worrying lack of pedestrians in those pics!
Is the movie still about hit-’n-run driving as a national sport? Death Race without pedestrian culling will be like Star Wars without space ships.

oh yeah, and this goes on the subject of prisoners with “tanks” i guess you could call them… maybe they are only gonna use prisoners who are in for like embezzelment or cutting the tags off of matresses….something totally non-violent like that-BUT that would be really pointless for the movie to have *nice* prisoners instead of ones that have killed many people and make homemade shanks out of soap and tooth brushes….idk, what do you guys think?

looks like some one made a movie out of the video game Twisted Metal… and i have played those games since i was like 7-8 and im 20 now, and still play them…and i own all the Jason Statham movies too….so two of my favorite things besides cars are going to be all grouped together in a movie….this could be a good time

That looks like a whole lot a fun ! ! ! is that a 66 Pontiac Le Mans i see in there as well?

. . . Only thing is, if they were really that heavily loaded and armoured then it would be a slow race ! ! !

Cant wait to see it though ! ! !

These shots make me excited about this movie now. It brings back fond memories of spending many Saturdays afternoons watching Mad Max when I was a kid.

new vehicles just dont seem to fit into this movie as nicely as old muscle cars or somethin would, specially the 300 and the Ram, just dont suit, but if it was an old Ram it would probably fit in just nicely, anyway maybe after i see it i will have more love for it

The premise is out there, but arming prisoners with multiple heavy automatic weapons?! That’s beyond ridiculous. There wouldn’t be any prisoners to race the cars after they killed all the guards and broke out.

So is this one based on that game they had, or is this the remake of the one with David Carodine? (death race 2000)

now that you say it heck this may be the begining for a Twisted Metal movie… Just think

This movie almost has nothing in common with the original Death Race 2000. Those cars werent exactly beaters in the original. I think CKNARF is closer with is dream for a Twisted Metal movie. This is just like Twisted metal, but in a more present day scenario.

The rear car appears to be a Jag XJS…wonder when they raid the Lucas depot for more insulators…
The front car is definitely an 05+ mustang…interesting to see one like that!
