Suburban Drifters Terrorize Oregon Neighborhood

By Jen Dunnaway

In Corvallis, Oregon, there’s a stretch of one of those curving subdivision roads that’s apparently a pretty sweet drift spot, so much so that it’s attracting thrill-seeking "teens" who practice drifting along 15th Street curve on a pretty regular basis. Things got serious after one kid lost control in the corner, careened across a suburban lawn, and totaled someone’s Subaru. Needless to say, residents are "upset," and their suggested responses to the drifting scourge are somehow quintessentially Oregonian: they’ve been leafleting the neighborhood, and threatening to plant a tree or to spend a year or five waiting for the city to install a speed bump. Um, how about tire strips? Check out this TV news spot, which inevitably invokes The Fast and the Furious 3 and refers to drifting as "a dangerous Hollywood driving stunt."

I love how they automatically put the blame on a movie. If it was made popular by the movie then why would they make a movie about it. It was popular before. I’m not suggesting it is a good idea to drift on that particular street but come on if the residence are that worried about it put down a speed bump. -Justin

They should just find a freaking parking lot in an industrial park on a weekend. This way, if the cops come, they would probably go easier on the drifter and it would be uneventful.

“…somehow quintessentially Oregonian…”

.
Just what is this supposed to mean?
.
.
Care to elaborate?
