Regarding Jeff Gordon, the facts are it’s really not important how many races he has or hasn’t won this season. What is important is how well he’s doing at the end of the chase and then how well he performs during the finish from there on. What separates world class drivers like Gordon from some drivers is that he understands the need to “systematically” learn every possible thing about this new car of tomorrow that he can. What he understands is that it’s NOT important to win the races at this time. What IS important is to know more about what will and will not work after the chase if finished. While some teams are getting lucky finding settings that put them in the front, some teams like Gordon’s team realize winning a few battles is not important. Rather what is important is winning the war. His experience has proven to his team that being in the top position right now is moot but rest assured when Gordon and his team begin to learn what does and doesn’t work they will begin to peak and that will probably happen right after the end of the chase. For those who have been watching he has moved up in the points from way down there up into 8th place. A good part of Gordon’s strategy is that his team is using races as test/practice sessions. The teams that will finish in the top 5 are those who know more than the others as to what works and what dosen’t.
