Does Your Car Smell?
By Rob Einaudi
Editor-in-Chief
Every car has some kind of smell. The Subaru Forester loaner vehicle with 140 miles on the clock that I had last week had a very intense chemical plastic new car smell. There’s the rental car smell–both smoking and non-smoking versions. There’s family car smell, from the milk and crackers strewn all over the back seat. Then there’s my favorite: old car smell. Seems like all of my Mopars have had a distinct aroma–a mix of mildew and oil and gas and aging plastic. I guess the car below stunk pretty bad cause its owner used 18 of those Repo Man style tree air freshener things.

You’re right about the “family car smell”. I think the worst-smelling cars are those that have been kidded in or dogged in, becaus kids tend to spill or mash into the seats all manner of liquids and solids, and dogs are just, well, dogs. Nice and all, but in an enclosed space….whew! The Buick is a convertible so I get to blow the stink off more ofetn than youd expect, and it mostly smells of aged viynl in the sun… with a faint overlay of mildew (hey, its a leaky soft-top in WA state, what do you expect?)

I had a box of these weird gimmicky Vicks-infused tissues kicking around in my Eagle for awhile when I had a bad cold, and that smell now seems to be permanently masking the medly of spilled and leaking fluids that the car otherwise reeks of… gear oil is always a big one. It’s kind of a permanent, comforting old-car smell, mixed with Vicks.

I put dishes of peppermint extract in my Escort GT one winter while in storage to discourage pests (it works), so it now smells minty-fresh over the fragarance of nicely aged upholstery.

My disel Escort wagon smells of burned oil and dog.

My parts car smells like nothing except dirty car parts. Which is good, since it’s going to the junkyard soon, and it’d be unhealthy to start seeing it as having a personality.

My Firebird smells like mint and cigarettes, and I wear Polo… but not today…

My car smells like assembly lube, wd-40, and exhaust from a car running way too rich. Not the most appealing smell, but better than fake flowery air freshner stuff.

my car doens’t smell anymore, but a year ago a pack of beer fell from the back seat on the floor and sprayed beer everyhere… it smelled like hell…

I hate my car’s smell, after the dealer’s cheap air freshener wore off, it smells of a mixture of dog and plastic. The fishnet seat material looks cool, but is impossible to clean, I think I’ll have to call the professionals in unless someone has a better idea.

oddly enough right now my f150 has no smell…its like it’s between losing the new car smell and getting a different one. But the old ranger i had smelled like a shop.
