Shelby GT500 vs. Challenger SRT8: Which Would You Choose?
By Rob
Editor-in-Chief
I keep hearing people compare the Mustang to the new Challenger, but that doesn’t seem fair, cause the Challenger SRT8 available now is quite a bit more expensive than the Mustang GT. But the Shelby GT500 is only about $2k more than the SRT8, so that seems like a closer match (of course, people have been paying way over sticker for both of these cars). With the Shelby you get 500 horses and a standard 6 speed manual. The Chally gives you a real back seat and IRS, but you’re stuck with an automatic (for now, anyway). So, which would you choose?

SHELBY MUSTANG HELL YEA Carol shelby has done so much over such a long time and that is hard for any company to duplicate Camaro and challenger great job hang in there you both look good and can be the catalyst for a real healthy rivalry between the big three . Love it when Im driving my charger or viper and I meet anouther car of any brand and the road race is on all cars have their high points but on the open road its mostly driver and who has the biggest sac . Montana’s open roads are awesome and the highway Patrol has 15 chargers Wahoo

I’ll take the Shelby GT500 over the Dodge Charger, oh I’m sorry I really mean the Dodge Challenger anyday. Quicker, lighter, faster, and better on the skidpad………..maybe Dodge should have put the Challenger skin on the Neon frame….?

Jun 21, 2008 at 2:22 am
The Challenger. I think the Hemi in the Challenger has more potential. The Ford needs a supercharger to make its power and Dodge makes it without one, admittedly it is less but the Ford without the blower is low 300hp territory. Thats less than the standard hemi let alone the one they use in the SRT8. Imagine what the hemi could do with boost. The GT500 may start out a little better from the factory, but I would rather make my own modern musclecar.

the mustang, the mustang is easily the best because the mustang is faster. 4 speed auto stick, yea… a 6 speed manual always comes out on top. You say lil girls ride ponies yet those little ponies become thourghbread horses. I give it up to dodge with the challenger however the charger well is a maily sedan with 5.7 liter in there and the challenger is just trying to get into the retro race. Mustangs will always prevail. But the challenger juss got into the race so lets see how it does.

hey, whey you mean SPECIAL vehicle team, do you mean special as in special olympics? ‘cuz that’s where the shyt stain, I mean mustang, belongs. chevy’s engines are at least 10 times more reliable than ford. and what is wrong with video games. sounds like some of these guys have been outperformed by a couple too many sleepers. but that’s ok, their supercars are still loud, and they cost a lot too.

ma’am i beg to disagree…chevrolet has built some very nice race winning vehicles…even over your euro-trash…yes trash, as for your dumpster talk..thats where european cars belong, not in an american car thread!
figured youd realise that..but guess i was wrong
and being a ford versus chevy dispute here, chevy does belong her in respect seing as they too, are coming out with a retro knock off…
also they will be competitive…
i would rather be in a viper for half the money or in that case a gt
than ANY euro junk…yeah, we all know what your gonna say,lady..they dont handle…they arent as fast…cry me a river!!run all them head on into a wall for i care id still rather be in my challenger/mustang/camaro..and yes i do own some top end cars take a look at my superbird..winged70bbody2…and my IROC…and my Daytona

I’d go with the Challenger mainly because I prefer the Mopar styling to the of the Ford. I’m not worried about the fact that I’m stuck with the automatic transmission, that can always be changed later. Also horsepower numbers can easily be increased to surpass the Fords numbers. [Especially with the $2k I saved by purchasing the Challenger.]

where do you get 800 hp from?heres the article…
The best stuff lies under the hood. Utilizing the KR’s cold-air intake and a new, larger-capacity Ford Racing supercharger, the Super Snake will romp with over 600 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque, standard. Not enough? With optional tuning, Shelby will provide up to 725 ponies providing you’re prepared to give up your warranty.? ^^^^^straight from motor trend^^^
also the hennesey car still retains its warranty!!!they didnt give exact figures on tq output but the hennesey is 725/750
and no matter what else is said its still a mopar….only little girls ride ponies!!!!lol get ur facts straight

Jun 20, 2008 at 3:12 pm
man….why would you compare these two cars??
the 2008 challenger is a first year car…the mustang has had that platform for a couple years..the 05 stang gt vs the 08 srt-8..theres a match..the srt8 would be an all around better car!..in 5 years all three cars will have their shit straight and then you can compare..
anybody want to compare the hennesey challenger(725 hp and yes they are out)to your mustang??? you are comparing a shelby modified car to a factory car…why not the hennesey??afraid it will mop the mustangs clock?? the saleen s281 and the hennesey srt-8 are a very close match…and no, tires dont matter because im sure the hennesey has better ones…and both cars cost around the same
this comparison is bulls@#t

Interesting to see both point of views from you guys
Personally, ide take the GT, and heres why.
1.Already stated and quite simple, the Fords power to weight ratio overtakes the dodges, loaded or not
2.The Challenger comes with goodyear eagles(tires), which arnt bad, but more of a cheap tire, you wont save much buying this car once you upgrade those tires to something suitable for the strip.
3.Speaking of the strip, Shelby consistently beats the dodge in the 1/4mile
4.Modifying the Dodge is causing problems, as the chassis is bairly withstanding the torque of the Hemi, as dodge tryed to keep it light weight. Changes are however announced for the 2009’s
5.Tho the Challenger is really sexy, and apears muscular, it doesnt hold up. First hand experience, a little love tap in a Tim hortens parking lot didnt leave a single scratch on my ranger’s bumper, not that i would care, but devistated the pumpter, trunk and rear quarter pannel. Not sure if the Ford would give the same results but hopefully il never know first hand
I do still like the challenger, just not as much as the stang

I’m torn on this comparison. I’ve ALWAYS been a loyal Mustang fan, but the Challenger has the fresh new look; don’t get me wrong, the Mustang is a great-looking automobile also, but I think the Challenger’s freshness help it in the exterior category. Now for performance…The Shelby wins hands down; 200 less lbs, 75 more hp equals Mustang coming out ahead. So I guess my decision goes to the Mustang…I just gotta be loyal to my brand. No doubt both cars are beautiful and have more power than anyone needs in everyday driving.

ibid:
At the dragstrip, the Shelby quickly put to rest any notions about cobwebs, blazing to 60 mph in just 4.3 seconds and closing out the quarter mile in 12.6 seconds at 114.2 mph-bettering the scorching numbers we recorded with our last GT500 (December 2006). Burdened with 250 additional pounds and fed by 75 fewer horses, the Challenger was outgunned but proved beastly nonetheless: 0 to 60 took just 4.7 seconds, the quarter rushed by in 13.1 seconds at 108.3 mph. Extracting the most from the Shelby takes more skill: In addition to a carefully executed clutch drop and lightning upshifts, the driver needs a deft touch on the throttle-or the rear tires will go up in smoke. Launching the Challenger, in contrast, is child’s play: Hold revs at about 1800 rpm with a dab of brakes, then let ‘er rip. Leave traction control on; hey, leave the transmission in Drive. The SRT8 will lay down repeatable 4.7s run after run.
The Shelby’s weight and torque advantage helped it circle our figure-eight course a half-second quicker than the Challenger, though the Dodge’s beefier Goodyear Eagle F1s (a mere $50 option) and larger Brembos gave it a slight edge in stopping power.

How can someone come up with the opinion that “the new Camaro sucks” when it hasn’t even been produced yet. You just want to make it sound like you know what you are talking about when you don’t. As for this battle, I would prefer the GT500 but both are great cars.

THE MUSTANG LOOKS LIKE THE CAMARO CONCEPT CAR EVERY BODY DRIVES A MUSTANG SO I WOULD TAKE THE CHALLENGER IN A PEARL BLUE MANUAL CUSTOM 20Inch RIMS SIMILAR TO THE OLD SCHOOL CHALLENGER RIMS A TURBO LOWERED A LITTLE BREMBO BRAKES KICK ASS STEREO COLD AIR INTAKE AND DUAL EXHAUST

It looks like the challenger has the lead, but the GT500 would kick the piss out of the challenger in any form of performance driving. Smaller, lighter, more horsepower, and a manual trans. I’ll take the Shelby GT500 any day.

I’m not a Ford or Mopar guy. But, I’d take the Challenger simply because at first, at least, there would be fewer on the road than the Mustang.

The Mustang. If it’s an automatic, what’s the point?

What a match up, but as much as I like seeing Dodge recreate the Challenger, I would choose the Shelby GT500 over the Challenger and for that matter the new Camaro, why? First its a Shelby, that should be reasin enough and second, I love the look of the Ford Mustangs for the most part anyway.
Answer: Shelby GT500 hands-down.

This one’s tough.
But, I would prefer the Challenger.
