World’s First One-Piece, 100% Carbon Fiber Wheels
By Rob Einaudi
Editor-in-Chief
I’ve seen carbon fiber wheels with magnesium centers like these Dymags, but nothing all carbon. Well, turns out "an international group of PhDs, physicists, and engineers, using the latest carbon fiber nanotube (CTN) aerospace nanotechnology" are working together in a secret underground laboratory to create the world’s first one-piece, 100% carbon fiber wheels. Only, they’re not sure which car to build them for first, and they haven’t decided on price. But we will definitely let you know when we learn more. In the meantime, if you own a high end sports car, they want your opinion. I think it would make sense to start out with the Z06, but then I drive an old Mopar with 15" steel wheels, so what do I know…

These are possible, this exploratory effort by a marketing engineering partnership is nothing more than a test of interest. these wheels are renderings of wheels, (computer generated).
The first image shows these with tires the second shows the same arrangement without tires from the inside of the wheels, notice they are floating.
Nanotubes are not uncommon and only increase toughness. I am sure these are still made like many carbon product are, the nano content does not mean these are grown in a petri dish or made in an underground weapons lab. I don’t imagine these will use Roswellian technology but one never knows what marketing crap get spewed out in trying to boggle minds of innocent consumers. Full petrochemical composite wheels were pioneered bu Michelin in the late 1960′s. Fiber reinforced resins not unlike a few other current makers. True the carbon fibers are higher performance than glass fibers used in 1960′s, but the process is only slightly improved.
Anyway marketing hype and a buck will buy you a cup of coffee. While trusting marketing hype might buy you crap.

I bet they’d be great on a Neon SRT-4!!! Drift racers would probably love them too!! They’d be gold for any ricer car, now that I really think about it!!!

Be nice to have those for my Roxanne. Maybe they should put a set on a super car and a set on a old pickup truck and see how they hold up. Put the car on a few tracks, put the truck in town and off road.

Fantastic looking and, whilst not the first, will bring some competition into the world of premium light-weight wheels… Hopefully bringing the price down to non-supercar pricing. Better grip on rough roads, quicker acceleration, reduced fuel consumption, reduced braking distance! Great!

This will probably be on the Enzo’s next big brother, The wheels look very “Ferrari” if you know where Im going…

These are very impressive. Being based on carbon nanotubes they will be stronger than previously contructed wheels using CF weave. CF nanotubes conduct heat very well. Also, the chemical bonding of CF nanotubes is stronger than the carbon bonds within diamond.
CF nanotubes are also the strongest, stiffest material known today:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_nanotube#Properties
The PhD’s are taking wheel construction to an atomic level, much beyond the previous weave lay-up that I’m used to doing. Amazing.

Great idea! Love the fact that it is in teh process of being done. Perhaps it will see its debut in F1? I sure hope so. And for all you idiots out there… NO DUH it would be expensive to fix/replace if you broke them on the road, its CARBON FUCKING FIBRE! Plus you guys would probably just buy these and use them on your piece of crap old mustangs and firebirds and use them on your shitty dirt roads. How about using them for their actual purpose? Like at the track?

Great Wheels. Make them for my Carbon car first….It would round it out nicely.

I think these would be cool on the Lotus Exige!!! However, carbon fiber is really hard to get to these days so it would probably bring up the Exige’s price by another couple thousand.

This is probably just a prototype, they cant put it on the road unless it can withstand the wear and tear of everyday normal driving and hotroding it around town. But its cool how theyre trying things like this

can i get them in 24′z for my stang??…hahah

Jun 24, 2008 at 3:25 am
i definately think they should be on a lotus considering that is sort of their thing lighter weight and controal reducing the unsprung weight that much much do wonders in every aspect of any car they are on though.

these are stupid… they would be darn expensive (if not imposible) to mend if pothole catches one and cracks it, then, the balancing of the complete thing would be idioticly sesitive, that said, plus the price of the wheel itself, makes it all a big wet dream, for now though, once CF gets made cheap it will be all easy peazy, and they should make them for the new Prius i mean, the whole idea of light wheels is to save gas right? LOL!

Not the first. First one is made by WEDSSPORT japan. It weighted 6.040 pounds. Even though it’s a project, it’s still the first dry carbon fibre wheel made.

ricers will be shittin bricks to get them haha! or they’ll just start painting there wheels flat black (like there hood) and make it look like carbon fibre from a distance

I have seen composite barrels and they were made out of Kevlar. The guy who manufactures them had a set on his Porsche GT2 and crashed the car at the track. The car was totalled and but the wheels really held up. They are extremely light and suprisingly strong.
I would love to see these come out. I am asumming they will be about $3,000 per wheel.

Wow, I did not think I fully carbon fiber wheel was possible. That is freakin sick looking though. I’m sure they will cost a crap load though. If I was rich I’d order a set pronto.

Wow, those would look nice on my car. I could use those here in Michigan with our pothole problems. I’m sure they are very durable.

Jun 23, 2008 at 5:22 pm
I think it is a good idea! It looks cool, is probably light, and definitely strong! Plus, I wonder how much faster it can make a car because it has to spin less weight at the tire compared to the heavier metal rims?

Jun 23, 2008 at 3:09 pm
Ok people, carbon fiber was never originally intended for “looks” so the group of you talking about how you want more color should consider a thing called “paint”. the point of the lighter wheels is to reduce rotational mass. only extremely fine tuned high end cars could see the true benefit of these carbon fiber wheels.

racing wise these are good but for us boys and girls who city drive your lucky if they don’t burst as your driving but all in all very nice and I’d so buy these for shows like SEMA and related shows.

Without looking at these rims close up, 2 me they look just like ur typical all black/gunmetal rims. Im not impressed. Id rather see more rims on the market with some color in them to match your ride.

They look great, but so do the rims with CF cladding with a metal skeleton. I wonder how much they weigh: they must really impove the car’s performance, with less torque being wasted.

Those rims would look mint on my 3KGT no doubt! and would probley look good on any high performance sports car

Ha! Ricers will not be able to afford those wheels. They would look good on an R8, Gallardo, or something like that
Tyler
Jun 21, 2008 at 9:09 pm
sweet another thing for the ricers, carbon hoods, carbon spoilers, carbon interior pieces, carbon trunks, carbon emblems, carbon engine parts, and now carbon wheels, why dont they just make a honda civic carbon edition.

Jun 21, 2008 at 8:56 pm
I personally would like to see CF rimes developed for either the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorrano, or the 911 GT3. The weight reduction would truly benefit these rides on the track. The Z06 is a fine starting point too, but I’d love to see something European mated to them first.
On the American route …..perhaps a set of A-market 20″s for the 2010 Z28 ????????? Killllller !

those things just have to be expensive and would probably get stolen

Jun 20, 2008 at 9:34 pm
Well “beaucoup cash” maybe … probably. But remember, we exist within a free market economy. Looks like they are taking the right approach by honestly asking the market what it thinks. I say kudos to them. But I tell you this, if I could afford an F430, GT2, etc., those carbon fiber babies would be on it!

Jun 20, 2008 at 6:44 pm
CHA-CHING! That’s gotta cost beaucoup cash

Jun 20, 2008 at 5:36 pm
that is awesome. Wheels are an endpiont for internal combustion engines and electrical invisibles (as old steel cars clearly indicate over the wheels). Why not take the wheels to that endpoints result with “carbon”? Thats my backyard point of view, would run a set anytime. The “one piece” construction would be better than a welded several, as one piece alloys have proven, and continuing to prove decades after thier original manufacture. An auto part to be optimistic about is a rarity, marketing thieves keep the price insane.

Jun 20, 2008 at 4:10 pm
Their survey page says 30-40% lighter than the best alloy. Wow!

Any idea what these things would weigh? I can see a great boon to folks with high performance cars – I bet you’d really feel a difference off the line.
