Richard Rawlings Arrives for Bullrun

By John Coyle

Editor

At the start of the 2007 Bullrun, Richard Rawlings and Dennis Collins bet fellow rally driver Jay Riecke 50,000 dollars that they could beat the New York to LA record of 32 and seven minutes. Then they jumped into a black Ferrari 550 and did it. How bad ass is that? Rawlings’ ride for this year was a closely guarded secret, and when he pulled up in this 1978 Chevy Caprice 100, everyone was losing their minds. Hey, it might not be a textbook donk, but it’s damn close. Of course, the 22" Foose wheels aren’t the only mods he’s done. The power train has been swapped for one from a 2008 Escalade, and this baby is  packing an air horn and a laundry list of anti-detection goodies. Check out this clip of him pulling up to the hotel, and don’t miss this in-car video, where he took me around the block and gave me all the details on the car. More photos after the jump.

I watched the video of him pulling up, getting out and kicking off his professional bid for total poser of the year. Must say, I was particularly impressed with his ‘please look at how f’n cool I am ‘cuz I really need you to think I could be… you know… cool’ approach to on-camera public speaking. And I don’t care what anyone says, the cheezeball “brutha from another mutha” line doesn’t get stupider every time some obnoxious d*uche utters it for the city (world) to hear.

To be frank, this guy needs to chill and not make his act so contrived. He needs to realize that the baddass a**hole shtick just attracts other a**holes. Who wants that? Only rarities, such as, Dr House can claim to be cool because their a jerk. This is because they have charm.

As for his ride, I think it’s a very interesting choice. I dig it. Fella obviously knows his way around a car. All respect to him on that end.

nice find and setup. He does mean 135 “cruising”, no pushing it, nothing manic, no high romps, and floating along in a nice ride. I miss them days… I built something similar.

I guess it just goes to show you that a person can be nice *and* crazy – he certainly seems pretty out there! If he can keep that car rubber side down, it’s going to be a killer.

Yeh that car is awesome. The mods he has done are fantastic, and I’m loving the new engine, it fits in their nicely.

so you’re allowed Nav Systems in Bullrun?… Doesnt that defeat the game of Bullrun?!?!… I thought people were only allowed a map… and then left to guess how long it would take to get to the checkpoints….(?)
