This Just In: New On The Net

By Jen Dunnaway

My diesel Escort parts car is stripped away to just about nothing. Now all I have to do is find a home for the ultra-rare engine block, and to send the body away to be melted down into modern econoboxes. Anyway, here’s the news:

  • The motorsports community is mourning the loss of Scott Kalitta, who perished in a 300 mph wreck during the NHRA SuperNationals on Friday. Jalopnik has posted the gruesome video after initially demurring. Jalopnik.
  • Kia Motors will be preying on stoned concertgoers reaching out to the younger generation while tagging along on the 2008 Vans Warped Tour. At each stop, the automaker will be plying potential customers in its air-conditioned Kia Soul Lounge, where the hipster-themed entertainment and swag will flow freely. The Auto Channel.
  • According to the Detroit News, presidential candidate John McCain has announced that he’ll be awarding $300 million of taxpayers’ money to whoever can develop the ultimate EV battery. Incidentally, the conventional lead-acid battery is one of the few things on earth that isn’t younger than John McCain. Things Younger Than McCain.
  • When is a wheelchair considered a motor vehicle? Well, when it’s motorized, and when you’re operating one drunk on a public highway. Komo News.
  • A Speedway station in Ohio erroneously posted $9.09 as its price for a gallon of regular. Motorists were stuck gawking at the sign for hours after a collision stalled traffic on I-75, and at least one swore he was moving back to California. Associated Press.
