One Hell of a Sprint to Utah!
By John Coyle

This morning, there was no joking around. Our first leg was a 400 mile plus sprint to Miller Motorsports park in Utah. I set out with Mike and Pete in the Fusion, and three other team angry cars—the CLS55 AMG, the F430 and the BMW 3-series—followed us. After getting stuck behind a cop on the interstate for an excruciating 45 minutues, we turned off onto the Douglas Press Highway, because it looked like it would be a good shortcut. The road was textbook perfect and we started to make some time. Even with an extra passenger in the little Ford, it didn’t have any problems making it to 111MPH, and we blazed along for close to an hour, before the road took a left and we started going downhill. This area was deliciously twisty and simply gorgeous, and Mike was driving like a total pro. The coolest part was that when we emerged onto highway 40, a road we knew some other cars had taken, we started to hear chatter on our radios. We’d caught the Audi R8, yesterday’s first place finisher! In a little econobox! How cool it that? It almost took the sting out of getting to the track 23rd! There’s actually more—a lot more—to this story, but I should probably wait until we get out of Utah to post it. Stay tuned.

Just goes to show you that even the econoboxes these days have far more power than they need. It might not be the quickest off the line but when all it has to do is maintain top speed for hours, a smaller engine isn’t gonna matter, and with the reliability and MPG of that thing, you might be catching more exotics than you think! Sure isn’t as exciting as the Daytona though.
