Bullrun: Essential Equipment
By John Coyle
Editor
Aside from a fast, reliable car—we’ll forgive the Fusion’s modest top speed—there are three things which are absolutely essential for any team doing Bullrun—and I’m not talking about Red Bull, beef jerky and adrenaline. Item one? An external GPS, like a TomTom or a Garmin. As far as accuracy and ease of use go, nothing can touch either of these units. The second must-have? A radar detector. Valentines are the weapon of choice, because they’re super-accurate, and report whether the signal is coming from the front or the rear. The volume on these life-savers is always cranked, because their blaring might save the driver a trip to jail. (Escorts aren’t bad either–you can see below that’s what Mike is using.) The third item is a two-way radio, so you can communicate with the cars you’re running with. Aside from being able to relay early warnings, when you’re trying to overtake a "civilian" on a tight two-lane road, having buddies in front give an all clear beats the hell out of waiting for a passing zone. But all the reliance on technology also presents opportunities for more trickery. For instance, when I was riding in the Fusion on Monday, we used a radar gun to make the guys running in front of us slow down. Is it a dirty trick? Hell no—this is Bullrun, not a Promise Keepers meeting!

Two way Radio Joe
Jul 3, 2008 at 2:23 pm
I ran across the mention of two-way radios and thought this might be able to help you and your readers.
There is a tool to help select the proper walkie talkie for various needs like travel, business etc. The two-way radio tool is here here:
http://www.TechWholesale.com/which-radio-is-right-for-me.html
There is also a section for walkie talkie selection by model, communication purpose, etc.
Hope this helps. Thanks for the nice piece.

Folks may not personally like the Fusion (much less as a rental), but these guys are putting the car through far more than it what many daily drivers are expected to endure, and it appears to be doing a damn good job of handling it. Basic transportation is not expected to be constantly pushed to triple-digit speeds and yet this very stock car seems to be holding up quite well. I’m impressed.

Ryan– That location is OK for a radar detector. The higher up location works well for mountainous areas as the detector is able to “see” above hills a little earlier than if it were lower.

Tell those guys they need to level out their radar detector unless they are looking for radar via overhead planes!

The radar gun tactic is a great idea,
especially since you guys ended up in such a lame rental.
.
Too bad you couldn’t get something a bit faster…
