Have You Ever Suffered A Blowout?

By Jen Dunnaway

I did, and it wasn’t fun. I had my little sister in the car, I was doing about 70 on the PA turnpike and pulling out to pass a semi, my Eagle was rolling on the junk tires it had on it when I bought it out of a field for 500 bucks. When the left rear let go, it felt like the whole back end was suddenly on rollerskates. Fortunately, my mad driving skills and people’s instinctive tendency to get out of the Eagle’s way averted major catastrophe. But I sure wouldn’t want that to happen again, and I sure learned my lesson about being a dumbass about my tires. Continued…

Kablammo!

With summer road-trip season getting underway, the NHTSA issued an advisory this week reminding people to check their tires. Most of all they emphasized proper inflation and tire age, which are major factors in tire failure—both underinflated tires and old tires are more likely to blow, and both conditions are compounded by summer heat. To that, I’d add checking for dry-rot and cracking (both more prevalent on older tires), and being extra suspicious of any tires whose history is unknown: if you’ve just bought a car, especially an old one, keep in mind the seller may very well have swapped on junkyard rollomundos before the sale so they could keep the nicer ones for themselves. The danger for old, junk tires is tread separation, which is what happened to me in my Eagle. If you’re driving and feel a harsh or cyclical vibration, pull over immediately and feel your tires over for deformities—it could be a shifted belt or a tread getting ready to separate. Better yet, if your car came with sketchy tires, or you know darn well you haven’t replaced them in years, think about biting the bullet and picking up four new, especially if you’re taking a trip this summer.

I’ve lost a wheel, witnessed a mirror taken out on a rig (its own tire took out its own mirror with a chunk)..never had a blowout in 21 years in my car. outright Flats, slow, bead leaks, bent rims, hubs struts caved in pouncing air out, out of balance, alignments bad to one side steel showing…not once a blowout. Lucky?

I had a slow leak in a tire a few years back. The pressure got too low and the tire overheated causing a catastrophic destruction of the sidewalls at highway speed. Miraculously, the rim was undamaged, which I guess is pretty unheard-of. Somehow, what was left of the tire stayed between the edges of the rim and the road.

Our range rover blew a tire doing 90 on the BAY bridge! All we heard was a loud pop, but the ROVER stayed straight the whole time I was impressed.

As gas prices go up, people are starting to try and save money elsewhere on their car. You may be about to scimp out on the fluids or filters the car uses. Engine blows, scoot off to the side of the road. But tires are not to be got through the cheap. Tire blows, car can flip or go into traffic.

I had a ’94 Astro that was way over due for new tires, but breaking my leg and paying medical bills was tying up my money. Then one day while my gf now wife was transporting me on the interstate with it the left front blew out at 65 mph. Luckily the van handled relatively well with a blown tire and she was able to get us over to the shoulder. We went to put the donut on and the ratcheting breaker bar that comes with the van broke. Luckily I also have AAA and they put the donut on after waiting on the side of the road for an hour.
