A Favorite Pic: Ultimate Rim Fitment
By Ben Schaffer
Bulletproof Automotive
Not for the faint of heart, this is the ultimate extreme wheel fitment and one of my favorite pics over the years. Those that have read The Real JDM magazine column may have noticed this pic from one of my widebody tuning columns. I like it enough years later to still share it a second time.

That car drives! Like everybody else said it’s on airbags. Im in Japan right now, and I see em all the time. This guy I know has a Toyota Soarer and his rims has like a 6″ lip and it drives fine.

Praktikality isn’t the question here. It’s simply how amazing the setup is for visual purposes. It is a smooth ride and it does look wikked with the stretched treads, I’m personally not a fan of stretched boots but I think it still looks sikk.

Clearly its a car with airbags laid out for a show. Are you people dumb?

This looks awful!,,The rims anyway.Looks like its from a 50Cent video or something.Im sure its a sweet car, but come on, bigger rims isnt always the answer.Sometimes a perfect sized tire not only for the car but also the rim can be the perfect fit overall.I say down size the rim a tad,,,,,or alot,,,,,and beef up tires instead.

First of all it has got to be on air bags or hydro’s. Being that it is a BMW it probaby has air bags. On most BMW’s you can run 10″ to 12″ widths depending the diamater of the rim like 18 or 20 inch! And the picture of the rear looks to be atleast a 11″ width. But the tire isnt wide enough! Looks like the have a 275 but need a 315! But in all honesty I would ride the shit out of it!

I remember driving a new 1992 Mazda B2200 with 15×12 rims w/ 205/50-15 tires streched on there. It worked for me as long as I avoided parrallel parking. Good Job! It looks rad!

1- PPL, the car rides on air
2- Europeans has been stretching tires for years, and years
3- Japanese have been stretching tires for almost as long but like everything they do, they do it 100x crazier, better, and style
3- Drifters sometimes use the stretch to have less of a contact patch which allows for more or less grip when needed
4- FITMENT – this picture is a PERFECT example of PROPER fitment, you guys dont know that the wheel you see here CAN drive like that. If it hit a bump the tire WOULD NOT rub… but the rim will hit the fender unless proper bumpstops have been put in place
5- Your Welcome… now start putting on your wheels right.

Absolutely impractical, show cars need only apply. Good luck though actually driving this thing to a carshow or out of a rap video… let drive it to work work everyday! I bet it wouldn’t even make a good date car… =/ And what about steering on the front…forget the issues with the rear compared to that!…

I just can’t get over how streched that sidewall is! That can’t be good for the tire. I’ve seen this on other imported cars in my area.
Other than for clearence reasons (as shown here), is there any real performance advantage for streching a tire like that?
ps… he’s probably running an air-ride system. Otherwise running over a penny would cause the tire to rub!

I love it. I first spotted the concept on an OEM bmw (can I say safely “of course”). It doesn’t look like the wheels turn full turn, suspension gets used fully, but it does…My biggest wheel peeve is seeing, say, a 500k mile volvo with the factory skinny wheels that not only looked incorrect, it hindered the cars reality. Another one is the old subes tortured by 13 inch wheels and an infamous 4 lug pattern…for the 30 freakin years the speedo stays slow and another 500k mile machine. Makes me cringe…there are ways out however, called ingenuity. Love to see it, it is indeed for more than show and shine. There is better tire ratings, handline, braking and ride..it is rather ridiculous NOT to fit like the photo. It even saves tead as tires last longer. Why have a 13 inch tire reef when the above inegnuity can slow the junk tire pile to a crawl?

Good lord! Does that thing actually drive? I know it’s technically in the wheel well, but I don’t know if “fitment” is the right word…
