Vibe or Matrix: Which Would You Choose?
By Rob
Editor-in-Chief
They’re basically the same car, or are they? Both are available with 1.8 liter or 2.4 liter four bangers, automatic or 5 speed manual trannies, and you can choose between FWD and AWD. And they each have sporty versions (GT for the Vibe, XRS for the Matrix). The Vibe is built in the USA and the Matrix is built in Canada. There are some subtle difference in the pricing, warranties and standard features, but I’m guessing for most people it will come down to looks and the badge. So which would you choose, the Pontiac or the Toyota?

I know people who a matrix and someone who owns a vibe. I’ve rode in both and driven both. From that I see there’s no difference in them. If you’ve read about them you’ll find they are made by the same manufacturer. The price and brand set them apart. Toyota’s recent popularity means you pay more for their cars, even if it’s used. So if you must choose between the two, I advise you buy the Pontiac and save yourself some money while supporting an American business, but receiving Toyota quality. And f.y.i, always buy used if you can find low millage. At the rate cars depreciate new cars are such a rip off.

What exactly IS the heart of the Vibe?? Well, a TOYOTA of course. It is powered by a TOYOTA engine. Remember the GEO PRIZM?? That was a Corolla..the Vibe’s success is due largely because it is a Toyota product and will provide the purchaser with the beloved Toyota reliabilty!! Do you think if this was not a well known fact, people would actually buy the Vibe over a Matrix?? Heck no!
This was how Toyota effectively boosted market share waay back when and became the dominating presence they are today..by piggybacking GM’s marketshare..and US presence through platform sharing. Toyota provided GM with economical and reliable vehicles back then, so you would thing GM would have learned from Toyota or at least gained some overall knowledge with the partnership to be competitive!!??
A big NO. Shame on GM.They could have reverse engineered and perfected the Japanese powertrains and build to further themselves. Instead they used the partnership to help pay corporate payrolls, Union Wages and help offset all of the “fat” within their companies. It surely didn’t go to proper R and D !!
The people that post “Buy American” are the same narrow minded and stubborn union idiots in the movie “Gung Ho”.
Buy American. Who cares what the Japanese think. Jap Crap. Etc. Comments like these are being posted by the same people considering buying Japanese cars now that GM, Chrysler and our beloved “American” brands have run themselves into the ground and out of money.

I bought my 2nd Vibe in July, 2009. I love it. My 18 year old son drives the old one and he loves them too. Being from Wisconsin, the Vibe drives great in the snow and it cost less than tha Matrix.

My sister-in-law has a Vibe and I have a Toyota. She spent less on hers than I did on my car. I still prefer the Matrix.

Clearly you guys have not done your homework. The Toyota Matrix and Pontiac Vibe roll off the same assembly line at a joint GM-Toyota plant in Fremont, Calif., and share the same platform and mechanical components. There styling and pricing is the difference.

They both look fast, and both look funny at the same time.
The Toyota has a nicer body kit, but the ugly bug-like bonnet and lights ruin it.
Although I’m one to stick with the ‘genuine’ product (the Toyota), I think I like the look of the Pontiac more.

Vibe, I had an 03.. it was an all around perfect vehicle… moved in it 3 times, it held A LOT of stuff, drove well…. 03 was the last of the “manly” angular front, this is a nice return to that aggressive look!

LOL… it’s not even a choice. Either the chick car toy or the pontiac. I’m not a chick and like a little attitude like the Vibe has. The toy is attitude deprived.

They’ve both been inexcusably butchered, but the Vibe is still a little more stylish, and less commonplace. It takes the win, for me.

I’ll take the Matrix any day. I’m not a Pontiac fan for some reason.

Matrix FTW! Both new models are a huge improvement over the previous gen. I stil dont understand the reason for the Toyota/Pontiac relationship for one model.

First, teh Pontiac Vibe was made earlier in Canada, one person said that his Vibe came with a Toyota gas cap, they are basically the same, with that said, the Pontiac Vibe, I like the styling better.
Answer: Pontiac Vibe hands-down.
