Return of the Double Nickel?
By John Coyle
Editor
After months of sky-high gas prices, some of the Senators in Washington are starting to act, well, high. John Warner, a Republican Representative from Virginia, is making noise about bringing back the mandatory 55 MPH speed limit, which he thinks would be a smart way to conserve fuel. Of course, if everyone were to slow down, the country would consume less gas, but getting drivers to comply would be an enforcement nightmare, and after years of ripping along at 70 and above, I doubt drivers would relinquish their right to drive fast without a fight. For more info on why bringing back the double nickel is a bad idea, check out this piece over on Motorists.org.

Here’s a better idea, let’s just go back to the horse and buggy concept and give up our expensive, gas guzzling over rated vehicles that we love and cherish so much OR just take matters in our own hands and bomb the f*** out of the oil countries like we usually do as the American way.

I drive a 1992 Cadillac Deville, and it has the Electronic Fuel Computer that lets me know what my fuel mileage is(CHECK OUT MY RIDE PAGE). It is prety accurate, and my best fuel mileage is at 45mph where I get 33mpg. Now thats with a 4.9l V8! At 55mph I get 26, and at 65mph I get 20-23mpg. So the 55mph rule is not completely crazy, but I dont know why car manufacturers cant just make transmissions that work efficantly at 65mph instead of 55mph!
Thats what I have to say, sign my guest book and tell me what you think!

55mph was bs when it came out in the 70′s and is even more bs today…my old (’92) vette got 28mpg at 75mph, while it only got 22mpg at 55mph…cars are more efficient and have more gears now than in the 70′s.
you gotta remember the vast majority of politicians are lawyers, not engeineers or people that actually know wtf they are talking about…as both a lawyer and an engineer i know most lawyers can’t do math or science to save their lives so they are open up to these ideas being pushed by dumbass greenies who have an adgenda that is based on emotions, not science.

Ha, even if they did change it to 55mph I’d still break it! That’s the speed my Grandparents drive on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

heres what i think. if you disagree, keep it to yourself, and post ur own suggestions. if ur just gonna bitch i dont wanna hear it
1. drop speed limit to 55
2. if you dont like it, get a radar detector
3. tax the hell out of automatics (in cars, auto trucks and suvs are still ok)
4. buy American. this is where im gonna get hell. its not gonna lower gas prices, but its gonna help the economy out. If youre bitchin about recession and drivin a NEW honda, toyota, etc, kill yourself. (USED tuner cars like eclipses, WRXs, supras are fine)
5. “i was in a hurry” and “i was racing” are both acceptable excuses for racing, as long as it’s the truth. the guy that was racing must at least 2 performance mods, or the fine is doubled
again, if you disagree, thats fine, but post your own suggestions, dont just tell me how dumb i am

my suggestion, i know some people are gonna disagree, and if ur one of those people keep it to yourself. i dont wanna hear it
1. drop the speed limit to 55
2. tax the hell out of automatics (in cars, not in trucks and SUVs)
3. buy American (Not gonna help gas prices, but everyone whos bitchin about recession and drivin a NEW honda, toyota, etc, line up so i can kick all yalls asses… USED tuner cars like eclipses are still ok as long as you tune them)
4. if u dont like the 55 speed limit, get a radar detector
5. “im in a hurry” and “i was street racing” are both accpetable excuses for a ticket, as long as theyre true.

i definitely could be wrong, ha ha i’m 17 years old i’m wrong a lot, and some will be better at that speed, i just know mine and my friends cars are better at around 100 km/h compared to 90-ish

that would be retarded, and well saving gas, a lot of cars (automatics) have their top gears set to cruise at that 65 mph (105 km/h) range, at 55 a lot fo 5 speed autos might still run in 4th, actually making gas worse depending on how the cars are geared

I think dropping the speed limit to 55 is BULLSHIT. I live in lextown, KY and on the interstate the speed limit is 70 and nobody does it. Around the rest of the town the speed limit’s are around 45/55 and no1 does that so the answer is not dropping it. SO 2 tha government keeping trying to find ways to fuck us even more.

MORE TICKETS, MORE MONEY FOR THEM, MORE GAS,ETC. ISN’T THAT THE WAY OUR GOVERNMENT WORKS? THE PEOPLE GET SCREWED AND HAVE TO DEAL WITH IT…

this really sucks because i cant go 70 even any more its too slow… i got 2 speedinmg tickets in one day one for going 104 in a 75 and the next was only 89 in a 65, but if i were in a 55 that would be horrible…

My car does 40mpg at 80mph @2500rpm.get a radar detector and let them fart about their 55mph speed limit that they decided to rip us

Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but most cars today operate between 2,000 and 3,000 rpm at seventy miles an hour. This is when the engine has the best volumetric efficiency and therefor has the best fuel economy. So now slow that same car down to 55 mph and all of a sudden the engine is running at 1900 rpm and getting much less V.E. therefor using more gas. And all the while the car is running slower. So to me, wouldn’t that just hurt fuel economy? I willingly admit i could be wrong…and maybe on trucks and suv’s the wind resistance at higher speeds but my fusion does get better gas mileage going 75 mph than going 55 mph.

Anyone see Mr. Angry rent a Ford Fusion, Maintain triple digit speeds for the duration of BullRun, and return a consistant 26 MPG?
Ok so if he would have dropped the speed to where us mere mortals operate on a daily basis, do you really think the MPG would have gone up any…at all?
Hypermiling the Ford, yeah probably. But that (26 mpg) is what the car was supposed to do…
Our engineering is getting better. Why doesn’t the government actually lean on those who design the technology for future cars. Why are we still building pushrodded antique engines? How come I can’t retro fit a brand new renewable resource power train into a 69 Charger (or put in your favorite ride)
The Government is too willing to blame me for thier problem. Too willing to make me pay for thier mistakes.
They saw this comming back during the 70′s
We were at war no one wanted, the Presidency was sketchy at best, and there was a serious gas shortage…
Wow, Sound familiar?
And now they’re thinking of slowing down my commute to fix a problem they should have been working on for the past 35 years?
Side thought, think Chevy will reintroduce the Chevette?

Well those politicians better shut the f#ck #p and focus on what actually needs fixing. I’m tired of that chain around our ankles better known as the “Beltway”.

it is way too late for that. gearing and small engines proved to exceed it economically. there are champs out there even older then the 55mph that helped prove that. old geezers in politics need to pipe down. Economic woes seem to bring out the madness of old timers like yesterday is today. Its called alzheimers. I won’t say “grow up”, would you? just give em an early retirement, or they go too far, you could give the the george bush treatment for being a crazy totalitarian leader who is off his rocker. Oh wait. George bush can only do that to other countries leaders…ahh well. who drives an old 80s sube. love the old subes at 85mph and 35mpg. simply genius.drive em while the country isn’t totally destroyed. enjoy real engineering while ya can, it is in the past and going for extinct..

55 mph isn’t the most efficient speed.
.
How they came up with that number still amazes me.
.
.
60-65 mph is usually the most efficient speed for MOST cars.
.
65 & up is where gas mileage starts to drop, for most cars.
.
.
55 was a joke then, and it still is.
.
