Lotus to Debut Eco Elise at London Motor Show

By John Coyle

Lotus has always aimed for low weight instead of high horsepower, which makes the company ideally suited to produce a sexy green vehicle. After all, why do you think Tesla choose to base its Roadster on the Elise? So I’m curious to get all the details on the new Eco Elise concept after it makes its London debut. At about 22MPG, the standard model already gets decent mileage—remember, this is a track toy, not a Prius—and the Eco’s slimmer curb weight should make for an even better number. But since much of a car’s environmental footprint is created during manufacturing, Lotus also used sustainable materials—hemp, wool, water-based paints—for the car’s construction, which is pretty cool. More details after the car is officially revealed.

I got a problem believing water-based paints are even nearly as good as lacquer or enamel on cars
