Corvette ZR1 Laps 'Ring in 7:26

By John Coyle

Everybody expected the General’s 638 horsepower ZR1 to be a beast, but this is the first time we’ve seen—and heard!—it in action. Watch as Jim Mero takes it for a blistering spin around the ‘Ring. How cool are the readouts showing the speed and RPM?

So why did they have an engineer drive the car instead of a professional driver?

awesome vid. The display on vid screen. nice. Tires suck. I wonder how many champs would be better with better than the best tires going today. Clear losses in all vids similar..the damn tires. I have even seen high rated on little cars..and still getting to be the annoyance after warming up too much. As one who took a gm v8 into 170s, it is nice to see a gmb built gm doing it on its own…by gm themself. past my times however, little car fan I am.

178 was the max I saw? I watched the first 3/4 of the run and was dissapointed at the 156. Then I watched that last straight…sweeeet! Not that I’m complaining about the 156, my little cruiser hit the limiter before 100, and I’m not sure I’d run faster than that in it even if I could.
Looks like GM built a real monster, grats to them!
