ATM Disaster

By Jen Dunnaway

Editor

And you thought you had problems at the ATM—watch this guy in a Dodge pickup bring the whole bank down. The truck looked like it got demolished pretty bad, and I guess it’s asking too much to hope that no one was hurt. But this was just too colossal a fail to leave out of the blog.

That’s a damn shame that thing came down that easily. Hell, if you’re not going to build it properly and all it takes is a tap to bring it down, what’s the point of even building it? Pretty stupid to build it purely for rain shelter than think that no accidents will ever happen and fail to prepare for them. Driver wasn’t paying attention, but fortunately he wasn’t wearing a seatbelt either so he can live and learn from his mistake. Sorry ass contractors though.

Had to be a Ford or Chevy guy driving a loaner Dodge, while their truck was in the shop.

WOW!

See a lot of this with RV’s. I drive Tractor/Trailers (Semi Trucks) for a living (44 tons worth plus) and it comes down to these two words “Situational Awareness”. Thank God no one was hurt.

By the same token, the Contractor and Building Code Inspector who built/approved that roof should have their license revoked….. PERMANENTLY, before someone does get hurt.

This was on Jalopnik last week, with additional aftermath photos. The guy & his 10 year old kid were unharmed.

I read that the guy wasn’t trying to go under the awning, he was trying to circle the parking lot and the corner of the trailer caught the lip of the roof.

On first look I thought for sure the driver was dead, but when watching it a couple more times I can see the driver exiting the passenger side so I think they were OK. In my oppinion I think that the bank and the driver of the truck both got what they deserved. That roof was obviously built to withstand rain and that is it. Hitting a low roof with a trailer? No excuse. Running over curbs, squirrels, front yards and sideswiping mail boxes, road signs and stuff like that I can forgive. I have spent many hours pulling trailers and backing them. Even the most experienced driver can forget the turning radius. Forgetting that your trailer is 15′ tall? Just plan no excuse.

Triangulation, shear walls, and something other than gravity should have been holding that roof in place.

I think the driver forgot he was towing a trailer.

All that aside – that is a remarkable video. I think I am going to go nail some diagonal boards onto things around my house, just in case.

That is unbelievable! I’m glad no one ever sneezed at that place and caused the roof to come down. I believe a lot of guys carrying trailers don’t know the dimensions of their vehicles.

I work at Butchart Gardens and tonnes of people are always running their RVs into things here.

Great Vid JEN!!!!

Holy crap that guy in the drivers seat has good reflexes. He was practically out the other door when the thing finally hit. Thank god there were no kids strapped in there.

On a side note his depth perception and vehicle awarness SUCK.

Side Side note: who the hell built that thing anyways, it came down like a graham cracker house. You cant tell me they couldnt have predicted that a tall truck would ever hit that thing. Every bank and Mc’y D’s in my area has a bashed up drive thru overhang.
