Brutal SLR McLaren Wreck in Qatar

By John Coyle

Editor

Details are sketchy, but this terrible accident occurred sometime early yesterday morning Qatar time. A 22-year old was reportedly driving, and from the size of the debris field, it’s clear the car was going extremely fast when it occurred. The driver didn’t make it, and there’s no info on whether or not he was carrying a passenger. If more details become available, we’ll let you know. For now, check out the rest of the pics after the jump. via LamboPower

I’m sorry, but how is one’s religious belief being slammed constituted as being racist? And they’re right it does look like it was blown up. Terrible crash all the same. It’s neat to see that the Mercedes-Benz passenger safety cage held together. 22 years old, man, unless there a professional driver an ordinary youngster shouldn’t own a car like this.Too much testosterone not enuff brain

Jul 18, 2008 at 10:12 pm

dammmmmnnn. that looks like the car must have been doing close to 300kmph! and stop the damn racial comments.

You all say horrible things about the guy that was driving the car(mostly racial things) but you know what…I rather be a crazy Arab than a fat, lazy, hypocrite, stupid American. Maybe you all think Arabs are hated…think twice. Americans are the most hated “humans” in this world!!!!!

Vlad
Jul 18, 2008 at 5:54 pm

Travelling at that high of speeds could not of done this.
Something must have of gone really wrong or like somebody here said the wheel stud broke. Having a crash with that big of impact… Especially to spread out all around the field pretty much ripping the car into a million pieces… Not to be racist or nothing but seriously a car to completly get shared all around the field like that seems like a explosive to me?

Jul 18, 2008 at 5:18 pm

i never really liked the SLR McLaren that much. I mean sure, its a mercedes with a hand-build engine, but compared to supercars of similar cost, its not as fast or as agile.

im not sure i’d even attempt to drive that fast on a road other than those few parts of the autobahn, and even then, im not sure i would want to go all out without some serious time behind the wheel getting to know the car’s limits and so forth.

I agree with mon! because you can afford the car doesn’t mean you can drive it.

Mon
Jul 18, 2008 at 2:53 am

No amount of technological improvements and advances in car safety features would take the place of maturity and great sense of responsibility in driving. Looking through these photos makes me wonder why many fathers out there give their very young sons (and daughters too) very powerful and fast cars that are too much for them to handle. I taught my sons how to drive and I did it hands-on. Because I wanted them to learn, before anything else, that driving is not just a privilege and that it entails a lot of responsibility and consequences that they should know by heart. I pity the guy who had to die in the pink of his health and with his whole life still practically ahead of him. Too bad he didn’t even get to learn his lesson. May he rest in peace.

If you read the top of the page, it says the driver didn’t make it. Even if the cockpit was in such good condition, decelerating so quickly would have crushed his internal organs, at least. At those speeds, wearing a seatbelt would result in instant decapitation. If he wasn’t wearing a belt, then he’d have made quite the impression on the dashboard. I’ve seen quite a few nasty car accidents, and there is no way somebody could survive what does this to a brand-new Mercedes.

billy porter
Jul 18, 2008 at 2:07 am

the cockpit did what it is supposed to. it detached and everything else took the impact. i bet the driver survived.

the new F1 cars have a pod made of multipul layers of carbon fiber to protect the drivers in a crash same with this car, BUT, at a roll/tumble like that, youre bound to die!!!

Anonymous
Jul 17, 2008 at 8:56 am

even though the passenger compartment is made using lots of carbon fiber, it still wont protect you from a crash going 200 plus!!!! rich folks think just cause they have money they are immortal or invincilbe. but here are some pics to prove otherwise.

Captain Bacon
Jul 17, 2008 at 6:05 am

Well. That’s a shame.
But at least the guy died in a cool/thrilling way.
And at least it was just an SLR. They never looked that great anyway.

Jul 17, 2008 at 3:29 am

Jul 17, 2008 at 2:44 am

maybe his insurance cover it

GTwildfire
Jul 17, 2008 at 12:46 am

At 200+ mph, even having nothing to crash into gives no assurance of survival. Looks like that car went into a roll, tumble or whatever. At that speed the forces involved would act like a blender in an occupant’s torso.

Jul 16, 2008 at 11:48 pm

A few days, some Super Glue, and Ductape and she’ll be good as new…..

Jul 16, 2008 at 11:12 pm

It looks like the crash site of a crashed A-12/SR-71 Blackbird I discovered outside of Area 51.

Evan
Jul 16, 2008 at 10:32 pm

Wow that Passenger Compartment looks like a Pod or something Looks like the driver probably survived. It also looks like those tires are definitely nearing the end of their life though. Well they are now anyways.

~

How do you explain that one to the insurance company?

Jeremy
Jul 16, 2008 at 10:28 pm

looks like he hit a freakin land mine or something.

Austin
Jul 16, 2008 at 9:56 pm

That’ll buff out.

Oafman
Jul 16, 2008 at 9:36 pm

WOW that is a messy crash. Hopefully it was a one car accident with no passengers. I do not think they could even find all of the parts to that car anymore.

Ryan
Jul 16, 2008 at 8:52 pm

Looks like the lug nus held the wheel and brake assembly together pretty well.

kap0w
Jul 16, 2008 at 8:39 pm

I don’t know too much about how specifically a SLR McLaren fits together, but I’m pretty sure all those parts are supposed to be *attached* to something.

Jul 16, 2008 at 7:59 pm
