Showroom Showdown: Ducati 1098 vs. Aprilia RSV R

By John Coyle

Editor

Rob is still out of town, and he left Showroom Showdown in my hands. After racking my brain trying to think of some cars to compare, I thought it might be fun to make this week’s showdown about motorcycles. After all, this is the perfect time of year to get on a bike! Both contestants are dead-sexy Italian V-twins with razor-sharp handling, and both will accelerate like cruise missiles. The Ducati comes with 15 more horses—160 compared to the Aprilia’s 145— but it costs $2000 more—$16 grand compared to $14—and Aprilia is marque that’s definitely seen less in the wild. So if you had to pony up some of your hard-earned cash, which would you choose?

Aprilia! Service is ridiculously expensive and the intervals are much shorter on the Ducati. So many people have bought Ducatis not knowing what is involved. Bang for your buck, Aprilia takes it!

I’ll take an RSVR Factory over a 1098. The Ducati has more power, after all its engine is bigger, but they are far more common. Show up to a bike night on an Aprilia, and people will take notice.

Whoever said Aprilia is a better deal than Ducati is right. The upcoming 2009 RSV-4 (200hp V-4) will go toe to toe with the
Desmosedici at less than half the price.

It figures the squids would pick a hayabusa. Fast in a straight line, but one heavy sled of a bike. A jap 600 would run rings around it on a track or canyon road.

I gotta agree with val… “Ducati has always had my vote, i really like thier design, its kind of like the ferrari of bike to me anyway…”

I was thinking the same exact word for word thing…!!!

Hayabusa’s are funny to pronounce, that’s it.. They got nothing on Italians.

Comparing these 2 italians is like comparing apples and oranges. I owned 999 and currently own 07 Aprilia. Both are amazing state of the art machines. The bottom line is cost, you get more for your money with the Aprilia.

Ducati has always had my vote, i really like thier design, its kind of like the ferrari of bike to me anyway, the tube frames and the single arm rear suspension is unique in a way too.

Well, don’t know all that much about Aprilla, but I’ve always wanted a Ducati, so got to stay true to my instincts and go with the “Ferrari” of motorcycles.

Why would i pay money to get myself killed?? B/c no matter how carefull you ride a bike you can’t account for all the retards that are allowed to drive on the roads. Just recently my friend got clipped of his bike while some woman was turning left and texting on her phone. He is doing fine now but road rash is far worse than cuts and bruises.
NO THANKS GUY.

Jay
Jul 18, 2008 at 1:17 am

Ducati 4sure. Rather than the Aprilia they should have put tha new HONDA CBR1000RR now that would be a great match and i will tell you why, The Ducati is well balanced and has good power. The Honda also has great power and in my opinion the 2008 CBR1000RR is the most balanced bike out there right now. And yes i have riden both bikes and i had to go with the Honda and im very happy with it, but Ducati is still one of the top bikes out there also

2 wheels don’t agree with me, need at least 3, like the Can-Am Spyder or the Campagna T-Rex, the TriRod, hell even that smart gixxer would be cool (although I’d rather have a Harley in it, how cool would that be?)
