Dream Cars A-to-Z

By Sam Barer

Sound Classics

The exercise is simple – there are 26 spaces in your dream garage. Each one is marked with a letter of the alphabet. The job is to fill each space with your favorite automotive representation of the specific letter.

In actuality, it’s tougher than it seems. All too frequently one must pass on a more valuable car for a vehicle that is infinitely more fun to drive, prettier, historically significant, or usable on modern public roads. Most letters also present the challenge of choosing something classic versus a newer exotic ride.

So after you see my picks below, I want to hear what yours are!

1966 Porsche 906 “Carrera 6

1932 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 – There are dozens of great “A” cars, including supercharged Auburns, Aston Martin DBs, Allards,  Audi Quattros and Auto Union GP racers, and Austin Healey’s 100S. None come anywhere close to matching Alfa’s supercharged straight-eight road rocket with gorgeous two-seat roadster coachwork by Touring. It’s one of the most valuable cars on the planet…and rightfully so – even if unlike the Amphicar, it cannot cross water.

1932 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300

1929 Bentley Speed Six Le Mans – The Speed Six was one of the ultimate dual-purpose cars.  It could drive cross-country to the track then crush all-comers. The Speed Six’s power and robustness make it the logical choice over the far more fragile (yet certainly more elegant) Bugattis. Still to this day, no matter where a Speed Six goes, it’s like bringing a wrecking ball to a knife fight.

1967 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray L89 427/425 Coupe – The best example of America’s most popular sports car. Instead of going for the no-holds-barred L88 (which cannot idle and is prone to overheating), the L89 puts weight-saving aluminum heads on the fire-breathing tri-power 427, giving it the crazy power of the big block, but with the weight balance of a small block car. The Sting Ray’s driving performance beats the gorgeous looks of Cisitalia Type 202, ’57 Continental MKII, 1932 Cadillac V16, and Chrysler 300C convertible.

1935 Duesenberg SJ/SSJ – Only two short-wheelbase supercharged SSJs exist and the owners simply won’t be selling them any time soon. Consequently, I’d take my second choice of a standard wheelbase Duesenberg SJ with a roadster body by Murphy or Le Baron. No Dodge (Hemi-powered or otherwise), Delahaye, Delage, or Dual-Ghia comes anywhere close…although a flux-capacitor-equipped Mr. Fusion-powered De Lorean might.

1958 Edsel Citation Convertible – Get over the grill, already!  Only 930 examples of the 1958 Citation convertible were made – each with the great Mercury-derived 345-hp 410-ci V8. This Impala killer also is better than any fiberglass Elva or neo-classic Excalibur. Elcars were pretty good, but the Edsel just has too many cool touches (push-button tranny and compass-dial speedo, included) to be denied.

1968 Ferrari 275 GTS/4 NART Spider – Save the more plentiful race-only GTO or form-over-function Enzo for another list, because the NART Spider is just the prettiest, best behaving, most versatile classic Ferrari ever…and now one of the most valuable, too! Just ten examples of the four-cam-equipped 275 left the factory with convertible bodies. I’ve drooled over one owned by a well-known collector in the area for years.

1968 Ferrari 275 GTS/4 NART Spider

1964 Ginetta G4 1500 – There are plenty of Grahams and Gilberns. I could even choose one of less than 100 Corvette-powered Gordon-Keebles, but Ginetta’s Cortina-engined G4 is one of the great lightweight sports cars. Watch one of these on a vintage racing circuit like Laguna Seca and you’ll understand.

1930 Hispano-Suiza H6C – Who wouldn’t want a car powered by an overhead-cam six that was built to quality and price standards that made contemporary Rolls-Royces look like a modern $2000 Tata? Hispanos were built to such exacting tolerances that the company frequently pulled the publicity stunt of running one for 100 miles then parking it on a white sheet to show that it dripped absolutely no fluids.

1909 Itala – Itala was the first true Italian exotic. The company was nearly unstoppable in early racing.  I’d get my hands on a 1907/1908 Grand Prix racer with the company’s nearly 15-liter engine.

1957 Jaguar XKSS – It was basically the Le Mans-dominating D-Type with doors, a full windshield and a convertible top. Only sixteen were made before all the tooling was destroyed in a factory fire. Steve McQueen owned one, which is reason enough to pick it over the four-wheel-drive pioneer Jensen FF or an early Jordan.

1952 Kurtis 500S – Frank Kurtis was one of America’s great sports car pioneers. His racers dominated all types of tracks in most racing disciplines. The 500S was basically a road legal Indianapolis roadster, which was as fast as a Caddy-powered Allard, but with far superior braking and handling.

1968 Lamborghini Miura – The word “supercar” was invented to describe the Miura. No onomatopoeia can capture the glorious sound of the V12 from the cockpit. Its looks haven’t aged at all – appearing just as stunning today as it did forty years ago. You really need to see one in person to understand how low and long it is. It’s tough to walk away from a Lagonda V12 or a rally-spec Lancia Stratos HF (one of my all time favorites), but the Miura is just that special.

1994 McLaren F1 – It isn’t as pretty as Mercedes’ custom bodied 540K or iconic 300SL Gullwing, but just like a Maserati 5000, the McLaren F1 was a cost-no-object product built for those who could afford the best. The engine cover used gold to reflect heat, for god’s sake! Due to its limitless engineering budget, it was the fastest car on earth for a decade.

2008 Noble M15 – A car with a twin-turbo 455-hp V6 behind the seats that goes 0-60 in 3.5 seconds and 185 mph all-out? Sign me up! Kudos to Nissan for its new GTR, but the Noble is simply a nicer looking and driving car with significantly less weight to haul around.

1954 OSCA 1500 – There aren’t many “O” cars from which to choose, but OSCAs should never be considered anything less than full-on dream cars. After the Maserati brothers left their eponymous company, they formed OSCA to produce small-displacement sports racing cars. Beautiful and nimble, the 1500 of 1954 was one of the best, as it won Sebring outright! How many Oldsmobiles, Oaklands or Ogles can claim an overall endurance race win?

1966 Porsche 906 “Carrera 6” – There are plenty of P classics, including Packard,  Pierce Arrow, high performance Pegaso…even the potent (if probably overvalued) Pontiac GTO and Plymouth HemiCuda muscle cars, but Porsche offers the best selection of vehicles that look and drive the dream ride part.  Most people would quickly blurt-out “550 Spyder” or “959”, because those Porsches received so much press. Those with a keen eye for the rare, however, would look to one ofPorsche’s glorious road course specialists. The series started with the 904, but the 906 combines the prettiest body with the most bulletproof engine. They’re also road legal – as required by FIA rules of the time, so if I ever felt the need to drive a half-million dollar car to the track to race it, I could.

1966 Porsche 906 “Carrera 6

1906 Queen – Everyone needs a big, powerful antique car, and the 1906 Queen fits the bill.  Built in Detroit, Queens were high-end transport for wealthy people. The four-cylinder Queen of 1906 delivered a whopping 28 horsepower to motivate its large touring bodies down the road. A friend of mine actually owned a mostly original, unrestored four cylinder Queen…it was as cool as ice cream on a hot day.

1930 Ruxton – It wasn’t the first front-wheel-drive car (Christie beat them by twenty years, Tracta by four and Cord by about six months), but New Era Motors’ Ruxton was one of the wildest. Its low lines were accentuated by a lack of running boards – a rarity for the time. The car’s inline-eight produced 85 horsepower, which made it a good runner. Contrary to common belief, the funky Woodlite headlamps were only an option, and only a few cars came originally in the outrageous multicolored gradient paint schemes. Most cars were plain black, but some have been repainted to match the iconic Ruxton look.

1930 Ruxton

1965 Shelby Cobra 289 – Everyone wants a 427 SC, but not me.  First of all, even with the revised platform with coil springs, they were horrible to drive with way too much power. (Most good racers were downright scared to compete in a Cobra 427.)  Secondly, pull up in a 427 Cobra and nobody will think it’s real. The 289, on the other hand, was a far more successful car on both road and track.  Its lines (sans wheel flares) are much purer.  Plus, no one will think I’m driving a replica. One of the six $5,000,000 Daytona Coupes that helped win the World Constructor’s Championship would be cool, despite the fact that they are miserably hot and fundamentally unusable in places with stop signs and speed limits.  Chances are, though, that the owners won’t sell, so I’ll settle for a standard roadster.

1937 Talbot-Lago T150CSS Figoni et Falaschi – The Talbot-Lago 150C could command a spot as one of the best cars ever on looks alone. In Art Deco teardrop coupe by Figoni et Falaschi form, a day hasn’t gone by when the car wasn’t considered jaw-dropping beautiful. It isn’t just about looks, as the 150C was a serious road rocket. A four-liter straight-six gave 140 horsepower in a car weighing just 3278 pounds. Like many of the French-built cars of the era, a Wilson Preselector gearbox was often fitted, which means a totally different driving experience from other collector vehicles.

1937 Talbot-Lago T150CSS Figoni et Falaschi

2008 Ultima GTR – The list of automakers making false claims that they offer a “race car for the street” is long and distinguished. Ultima’s GTR, however, is no more street legal than many Le Mans legends as the Ford GT40 and Ferrari GTO. Technically it’s akit-car, but so were cars from Lotus and TVR.  It’s also not street legal in the USA without a federalized EPA-tested powerplant. The company has specs to accommodate – mainly by suggesting you throw a Small Block Chevy in it. In any event, the GTR is as close as you can get to a car that is as competitive on the track as it is insane when driven legally on the road.

1937 Voisin C20 Simoun – Vector (not to mention Volvo and VW) has nothing on Voisin. Gabriel Voisin was an airplane manufacturer before WWI, so his cars reflected the importance of light weight and engineering perfection. He used aluminum extensively, as well as licensed Knight’s sleeve-valve engine design. The C20 had a 12-cylinder engine, plus a coupe body to die for. (Ole Gabriel didn’t like convertibles, and therefore almost all were coupes or sedans.) The C20 is instantly identifiable as a Voisin due to the external radiator shell supports that run from each fender.

1925 Wills Sainte Claire – As much as I like the Warwick (a Triumph-based GT also sold under the Peerless marque), there are only two “W” cars with the pedigree to make the list. The first is Willys-Knight, which used the same Knight-licensed sleeve-valve engine technology as the Voisin. The second, Wills Sainte Claire, is a little more impressive. When Wills Sainte Claires debuted in 1921, it used a V8 with connecting rods made from aluminum, as well as bodies from steel of superior quality to that of any other vehicle. In 1925 an overhead-cam straight six replaced the V8, giving it enough power and reliability to go from New York to San Francisco in 83 hours and 12 minutes — a record in 1926.

1924 Xtra Sociable – It isn’t much, but it starts with an X. Better than the Xillion and XTC, both Fiero-based Ferrari replicas, the Xtra was just a basic three-wheel cycle car. The best Xtras were the two-seat Sociable, which instead of being powered by the single seater’s 270-cc motorcycle engine (sourced from Villiers), used an eight-horsepower JAP v-twin. Think of it as a poor-man’s Morgan.

1925 Yellow Knight Mountain Wagon – Not many Y cars from which to choose, but one is the commercial-spec Yellow Knight. In 1925 the company made a large woody wagon for sightseeing duty powered by a Knight sleeve-valve engine. While Yellow Knights are not highly valuable, they are indeed rare and quite unique.

1960 ZIL 111V – I’ve chosen cars from America, France, Germany, Italy, England…so why not a relic from the former Soviet Union? In 1960 ZIL produced the 111V seven-person parade limousine.  Styling was pure 1957 Chevrolet, including the fins and excessive chrome trim. Power came from a six-liter V8 producing 200 horses, which was probably just adequate given the car’s 6000-plus pound girth. The ZIL is so cool…in a Cold War kind of way!

So which 26 cars would you take?

I can see that Maffew and Chris are likely Gran Turismo players, because their choices are popular gaming cars.

Chris — I find it interesting that you’d take an ‘82 Ferrari 308 GTSi. The two-valve injected cars are the slowest of the series –and far less fun to drive than the carbureted 308s that the GTSi replaced. The Quattrovalve cars added significant horsepower and torque with the same look. Personally, I like the color-coded bumpers and additional power of the 328 GTS, but then I’m biased — that’s what I own.

As for I cars: Infiniti, Isotta-Fraschini (to die for classics), Innocenti, Iso (gorgeous cars with Corvette engines), Invicta (British) are all for the taking.

Q: Qvale Mangusta

R: REO, RUF, Renault, Reliant, Railton, Rochdale, RGS Atalanta…

W: Warwick, Wartburg (better looking than it sounds!), Westfield

Z: Five brands of Russian cars, plus the neo-classic Zimmer.

I don’t think I could even come up with a list for most of those letters, but I’ve got to agree with some of your calls. I do have to say though, I’d go with the Gullwing Merc and due to my own strangeness perhaps, I’ve got to see a Volvo 1800S on the list. Just cuz.
