Cleanest Monster Car Ever?
By John Coyle
Editor
Ok, so it’s not four-wheel drive—which is kind of a big deal—but even still, you have to admire the craftsmanship of this monster Beetle. The chassis was designed by an aircraft engineer who wanted to make sure it was absolutely bullet-proof, the paintwork is beautiful, and it’s got some nice little touches—including a fiberglass tilt front end and a trunk in the space formerly known as the engine compartment—that illustrate how much time was spent getting this car right. As an added bonus, the person who took the photos of it has a great eye. Head over to Ange’s Space to check them out.

David, If you bothered to look at ALL the pics you can clearly see he used triangulation to add plenty of strength to the undercarriage. The front assembly is a stock Torsion front end and is no weaker in this setup than it would be stock. I’ll give him an “A” for creativity and unusual ride. Woulda been even better with a S-10 or Bronco undercarriage and drivetrain
Does need some guages though.I would drive it
lol

hey thats funny. non functional but ok. not my thing throw a 454 big block under the car in that new found space up front and you’ll get my vote. must be reliable to be a true “whatever you wana call it”

So he just moved the suspension and drivetrain down, and that constitutes craftsmanship?
That steering setup looks dangerously fragile. The front framework is hardly supported vertically, and the rear framework holding the engine and tranny, and suspension looks like it could come unnattached at the slightest pothole.
Sorry, but I would like to know what aircraft this aircraft engineer designed…. so I can avoid flying on it!
Paint and interior look nice and clean though.

Thats pretty cool i love to see extreme custumization and that bug takes the cake. Lots of work to bad for function though but hey some people prefer form by gf had a 91 Caprice and sold it then it got lifted with 22’s, it was a cop car and all function went out the door it used to handle sweet and take off like a rocket but that person just wanted it to look cool and this bug is the same it looks sweet but for me no lifted little cars or huge rims id rather spend money to make it fast and handle

You know I saw some of the cars on 24’s and thought it looked dumb. But then I read some of the comments and I stand corrected! It may not be what I like but you know what? It’s not my car! some people don’t like my rides eather and thats ok I am building what I like we don’t all like the same thing if we did it would get pretty boring we would all be driving the same thing. We all need to have our own ideas and share them with all our frends on Cardomain! As for the bug I love it! I used to have 12 of them and wish I still did! and for the people with the cars on the 24’s – Cool! it’s your car enjoy it and do it the way you want it!!!!!

Nice! It may be a little bit novel but it’s definitely an attention getter. Great planning done on the mods. And, yes, I would be happy to have one of that.

well it looks cool but I wouldnt want to take it where I go with mine. I have seen a bug setup for mud drags, it was on 44″ boggers and a blaser frame. Now that I would drive.

You people never fail to amaze me. Lames. This car is nothing too different from previous cars with big ass rims that you all claim look so ridiculous. Just like the other cars with big ass rims i like this one too. It’s unique and different. Pretty sure the mileage is horribe and i cant believe the guerilla kit on a damn non 4×4 but hey to each’s own

lol Damn, so I bug can be lifted, with “mud slinggers” and its cool? Its funny how the topic heading says “You have to admire the craftsmanship”. But when its a Challenger on 24’s, or a lifted Caprice, its a piece of shit! I dont get it.
I've had it!
Jul 29, 2008 at 8:39 am
Wow! Would yall comments be different if the rims were chrome? I guess you can tell that black person didn’t build this so it’s okay, right? If this were the same design, but with a different paint job and 28″ rims and skinny tires… This will never cease to amaze me.

I wonder though if that fuel tank is big enough…? Since I truly dont know, is that the standard size for VW’s?

Clever design. Its a great bug. Course everyone is dissapointed it isnt a super 4×4. It is still just a bug. All that extra power would have been a waste. Seems no one complained with VW powered dune buggies, and Myers Manx’s back in the day. Most early kit cars also found Vw power.
No, this is a perfect tribute to the continued love affair of the venerable Beetle.
Yep, I would love to have one too!

Funny how some of the people who responded here, just commented on how 24s dont belong on a Challenger.
But 38inch tires belong on a bug? Madness..lol.

looks like it’s as high as it is long, but for what it is I do like it. I wonder what kinda mileage it gets.

awesome. I bet its less top heavy than appearance…and with the boxer engine keeping as keel, as an aircraft engineer knows.Difficult to explain the realities, as per custom usual. I like it, beyond optimistically. The 2wd beetles even jacked up a little bit are famous offroaders already.Nice ride.

Cute and all but, with that height and non 4×4 it’s a shame he didn’t shove a small block chevy in there or something… Still VERY CLEAN!
